The past seven days were supposed to be Texas Gov. Rick Perrys comeback week. He had an economic plan, a big address, a new staff and a new Iowa TV campaign. And yet, the week turned into a mini-disaster, typical of the error-plagued Perry campaign.
Instead of spending the week talking about that proposal, however, Perry found himself repeatedly driving around the rhetorical cul-de-sac that is the debate over whether President Obama is a U.S. citizen. . . . Rick Perry, for using your cowboy boots to step all over your campaigns preferred message, you had the worst week in Washington.
The staff shake-up itself impinged on th speech rollout, getting the media to push out a number of process stories. Then came the birther mess, which engulfed the campaign for several days. Meanwhile, Perry sounded like a disgruntled loser when his campaign let it be known he might skip out on some debates.
Todd Harris, a Republican consultant not working for any presidential campaign, told me, It seems like whatever week were in, its always the FOLLOWING week when Perrys going to turn things around. The problem of course is that theyre running out of weeks.
The sense that Perry was never ready for the presidential race seems to be pervasive. And then Perry, ever the stubborn Texan, refused to call his birther comments a mistake. Joe Allbaugh, his new campaign chief, may start wishing he had chosen another campaign to pave his return from political oblivion.
At the Cornerstone Action Dinner Friday night he touted his new economic plan. His delivery was strangely mannered and giddy, as if trying to compensate for his sleepy demeanor in recent debates. Plainly, he is struggling to address his likability problem and hasnt quite found the right tone.

It’s all wishful thinking for Perry to go away. Cain has to be the last remaining choice as the anti-Romney. If Perry drops, we’ll see a similar smear campaign against Gingrich.
It has gone viral and it looks like he’s drunk on something. I’ve already said I was embarrassed to see it and I’m from Texas. He has killed himself once that video spreads around. It’s just terrible.
What’s your hurry? There is a lag time between events and the poles and there have been no primaries yet. Let’s see how this play out. Don’t rush it and be so critical and complain.
...DO NOT COMPLAIN... Again, it simply makes you look like a loser...even if you dont think so. Complaining turns you into a high maintenance worker who bosses HATE and who bosses will get rid of as soon as possible - even if you are good at what you do...
Oh wait... that’s what you said.
“Whats your hurry? There is a lag time between events and the poles and there have been no primaries yet. Lets see how this play out. Dont rush it and be so critical and complain.”
It took Perry (and Michelle, for that matter) no more than a week to collapse. Cain is still on top and has not weakened at all.
Anyway, we’re waiting to hear Perry’s campaign bosses explain away this inebriated performance...

Stay out de bushes. We have had enough of them. Hope Jeb doesn’t try to run...G. Bush was great on the war, love of the military and foreign policy, stunk on the rest..His love for the military I think stems from him being in the military, but domestically he was no good..He is a wonderful person but don’t know if Jeb was in the military or not, just don’t need another one..
The Shamnesty clown was done in by his foot in mouth. How heartless he is.
Time to put Jennifer Rubin out of her misery as a faux Conservative...the Conservative webs are going to take down this ugly little crapster. She was the mouth of Commentary and drove away a lot of the readers until even these neo’s dropped her.
Good riddance to Romney Lite.
Oh my lord. I hadn’t seen that speech before. “Make Obama a worm turn president...”
wow. That was seriously bad.
It is awfully early to call anyone’s candidacy dead. IIRC, McCain was in the single digits at this stage of the 2008 campaign. The politicos are all over the campaign but the vast majority of even primary voters aren’t really paying much attention yet. What we do know is the rank and file Republican voter doesn’t like Mitt Romney and is likely to jump on board of any candidacy which would deny him the nomination. There are lots of huge swings left in the polls but with one constant, Romney stays at about 25%.
That's so true-----but things will change when voters view Perry's three new ads:
AD #1: Perry declares that under his watch, China will not go Communist.
AD #2: Perry's success with the Gardisil vaccine has him convinced he has found a vaccine that will eradicate diptheria in our lifetime.
AD #3: To display his foreign policy credentials, Perry is filmed railing against the assasination of Archduke Ferdinand.
