Cain turned to Win Wallin, the president of Pillsbury, for help. I cant get to your job from where I am, Cain told him. What do you recommend? Wallin suggested getting on the operations training track in the companys Burger King division, which could lead to being a regional vice president. If you want to run a business, Wallin said, you have to start at the bottom and learn it from the ground up. It would be an unconventional move. Cain would have to resign his title, give up his company car and nice new office, and forgo stock options to start over, flipping hamburgers with the broiler crew.
As with every major decision in his life, Cain turned to prayer for help. He got down on his knees: Lord, what do you want me to do? When his wife noticed him lost in reflection and meditation, she told him, Dont worryI know you can do this. Cain accepted her words as a sign from God that he was making the right move.

He clearly isn't. Reagan had a record to run on before he was elected president. He had served as governor of a large state, proven his abilities to be an executive in a republican form of government. That ain't just running pizza joints.
For certain voters on our side it is. It makes the candidate an "outsider", and allows them to project their own fantasies onto that person. And with no record, there is nothing to shatter the illusion.
So this article is 15 years old...and it sounds EXACTLY like the Herman Cain of today.
Let’s look at another person running for president 15 years ago, shall we. The year is 1986, and Ronald Reagan and Phil Gramm (along with many others) have already seen the writing on the wall and switched from being Democrat to Republican.
And what’s Rick Perry doing? Trying his BEST to get more DEMOCRATS elected...starting with Al Gore two years later.
Sorry. I don’t buy your line that a government executive is superior to an executive with experience running a free enterprise.
This country is in a gigantic mess and perhaps it’s time for someone to come on board from outside of the political spectrum. I like the idea of a brilliant man who has had to live in the real world, like the rest of us peons, taking the reins.
WHAT ELSE DO THEY HAVE???
That's good, because I never said that. I think someone with actual business experience is a welcome addition to politics. Why not? But that doesn't make the presidency an entry level position.
Running a corporate franchise operation is not like running a republican form of government. If Cain wants to be an executive in republican government, why doesn't he run for governor and prove himself?
Of course, I'm less impressed by his business background than others might be--I've worked with corporate franchise executives. I know the job they do. It's fine. But it's not that big a deal.
Herman Cain is a salesman and probably a pretty cool dude. He's a successful American but make no mistake, if he becomes President his advisers will be running the show.
I can see this because he couldn't explain nor defend 9-9-9 and his adviser changed it at first examination.
He made speeches about electrifying a border fence with enough voltage to kill a person and then said he was joking.
He stumbled in 3 different interviews trying to get out his abortion stance and the last one I heard he affirmed that abortion shouldn't be part of the political discussion.
He has absolutely zero understanding of foreign policy or even border security.
A vote for Cain is a vote for his advisers with Cain as the front man selling the product.
By his own admission he should start at the bottom of government, say city counsel, then mayor, then governor then President.
Is it raining on your parade in your corner of the world?

The song could win him the election by itself.
I agree with you.
As long as I’m alive and kicking, nothing rains on my parade.
Actually, I was too glib. The health of my family is at least as important as my own health. But politics? No, it’s amusing.
He IS the rain on the parade.
Great post, Kart.
I’ve been with Cain from the get-go, hearing time and time again “he can’t win”. Well, now those same people are sitting up and taking note. Many are planning to vote for him.
We need a man like Herman Cain in the White House. Someone who can lead and inspire. He’s not a politician, I say, “great!”.
I like Newt and Rick Perry too and wouldn’t mind seeing either of them in the White House, but I truly believe that Cain can and will win and that he is the best choice for the nomination at this time.
Politicians are the problem, not the solution.
Herman Cain is the solution.
