I leave any empty containers in the cart until I pay for everything at checkout and have had no problems. Perhaps this was an innocent mistake, perhaps not, there's no way to know for sure. Still, I think the Safeway manager made the wrong decision.

A lot of confusing reporting going on here.
The original story (http://www.khon2.com/mostpopular/story/Makiki-couple-arrested-over-5-sandwich/h-yUAH_SuEOvm_PZfXUcZA.cspx) says, “A couple’s three-year-old daughter was taken away from them for 18 hours after being arrested for forgetting to pay for a $5 sandwich while grocery shopping.”
*A* $5 sandwich. Also no where does it say the husband ate anything. The mother does say “we”, but that could easily include the 3yo. Giving a child a few bites would be entirely normal if a mom was having a sandwich.
There’s a lot left out of the story like where were the wrappers. Still, it seems entirely out of proportion to seize a 3yo over a $5 sandwich. If an arrest needed to be made, take the father. It’s ridiculous to put a child through CPS for $5.

The store manager wanted to go to the extreme then.
Shame on him, the woman was pregnant. Pregnant women are going through a lot of issues already. She may have been anemic and needed to eat.
When I was a kid, about 8 or 9 I think, I shoplifted a neat little flashlight from a store called Grants that was an old chain up in Michigan. The store security officer busted me, dragged me and mom into the back office and proceeded to file a full report and called the cops over a $2 toy.
Since that day I have never so much as put my hands in my pockets while shopping, much less eat anything I haven’t paid for yet for fear of being stopped and humiliated again. That was almost 40 years ago and I still get sick at the idea of someone even suspecting I was stealing. Getting busted and humiliated that one time was the best lesson I think I ever had.
Also the manager might have followed the company policy of zero tolerance, the owners might have instructed him to do exactly what he did and he had no choice in the matter, that’s how its handled where my wife works.
Either way the store is rightfully going to take a big hit on this publicity I think.
Yep...some of the folks in this thread would have you believe it IS alright to steal.
When my kids were little, several times I pushed my cart out of the store without paying for something in the cart. Each time it was entirely unintentional. (And, each time I trudged my kids and I back in the store to pay for the item.)

Two sandwiches for a 7 month pregnant woman is within the scope of reason. If she had skipped breakfast and was doing errands.. absolutely. Your blood sugar can get all wacky during pregnancy. Dizziness and lightheadedness would be a reasonable result. I just think if the manager had asked her... one simple question, “Did you eat anything in the store on your shopping trip?” then all of this would not have taken place IMHO.

I don’t think she was stealing—I think she forgot. She was pregnant and needed to eat. It is as simple as that.
She paid for her groceries, how hard could it have been to ask her to pay for the item she forgot without going to this extreme?

stealing is determined by intent, you on your high horse. Glad you are so clear minded you never goof up. Shopping with a 3 year old alone is enough to make a mom go wacky. After my 3 year old walked the minicart through the line and out into the parking lot while I was frantically looking for him, I ordered my groceries in for years.
That's not because I fear they'll arrange for a police kidnapping or something (my youngest is a big guy and over 6 ft tall), but I might make a mistake and don't want them messing with me.
Look, if they'll drag a 30 week pregnant woman to a prison and hand her children over to strangers, imagine what they'll do to an old fart ~ just not worth the risk.
I do that with the sodas in the cold boxes by the register. Pick one up, take a few sips, and pay for it on the way out with everything else.
My daughter was fussy when little so I would take a box of fruit snacks, open a pack, and the whole box went in my cart to be paid for on the way out.
I think alot of people do stuff like that.

Safeway has an attorney on a retainer whether they need to use his services or not. I’ve had it UP TO HERE with freeloaders, and I hope Safeway has the backbone to not cave to these leeches.

It doesn't matter what their intent was, it was an extremely stupid thing to do and stupid actions often have unpleasant consequences.
