When students apply to public universities or colleges, should they be admitted - or rejected - based on their race? Should they be taught that it isn't their drive and determination that count, it's their skin color?
The United States Supreme Court has been asked to hear a high-profile lawsuit that asks these questions. Many analysts expect that the justices will accept the case - Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin - and issue a ruling that could affect public universities nationwide.
The petitioner is Abigail Fisher, from Sugar Land, who was denied acceptance to UT-Austin. She sued because she was not evaluated on an equal basis with applicants from other racial backgrounds.

I’ve not put my race on a form for decades. My official race is “MYOB” when I fill out a form.
I’ve always preferred “NOYFB” myself...Stevie666
Native American here. I was born in the US! Occasionally I am also “Other.”
Thanks WilliamIII.

I once, during a period of unemployment, applied for a position at the California State University, San Marcos. The nice lady taking my application sighed and said...
“Too bad you aren’t a woman... or black.”
Seriously had a good laugh at that and found a good job. 18 years later, still working it.
Good maybe they will give a woman a hearing.
For a generation it has been why would a white Christian male even care if he was discriminated against in higher education, since in the long run all the jobs belong to the government and they simply don’t want him.
LOL! They got a little dig in there...
That said, I thought all of this had stopped with the Bakke decision. I guess it's been creeping back in.
Didn’t someone once say they dreamed of a day he’d be viewed for who he was rather than by the color of his skin?
Liberals? Anyone?
Demographic identification is always voluntary and there are no penalties for it not being “correct”. Pick the most advantageous group and declare it.
This has added value of destroying the value of the data in addition to monkey wrenching the racist system
I don’t buy this woman’s claim. Affirmative action benefits White women more than even black men. The only categories of people who theoretically benefit more than White women are black women and hispanic women but competition from these categories is low. So White women ARE the biggest beneficiaries of affirmative action. This has been proven by many studies. They are the ones who founded Gender Studies and other stupid subjects and dominate these fields. If this student did not get admitted, she probably was below par.
Making people fit themselves into one of these categories is very Jim Crowish in spirit. The melting pot at last is beginning to soften the edges of racial distinctions.
It isn’t just ethnic groups getting a free pass. Women are also venerated over men in degree programs and workplaces in an attempt to make quotas further weakening an economy based less and less on merit and more on demographic envy.
That may well be. However she is not suing for not being admitted. As the article says, "She sued because she was not evaluated on an equal basis with applicants from other racial backgrounds." In theory she could win the admission and still sue because the discrimination is unfair to both the winners and the losers.
Um yes, but d*mmit we don’t talk about that. Shhhhhhhhhh.
That must have been the Republican coming out in him. As he was before Coretta sold the race to the Democrat plantation.
