Insider's Insights on the Perry Shake-up (Anita calling the shots)
The New Republic ^ | 10-25-11 | Alec MacGillis

Running for president would be different. "I don't think it'll be seamless," cautioned Bill Miller, a veteran Austin political consultant who has worked for both parties and counts Perry as a friend. And no, it has not been seamless. In fact, it's been coming apart at the seams, which is why Perry has now brought in a whole new set of advisers, in addition to his standard team, led by Joe Allbaugh, who served as the day-to-day manager of George W. Bush's campaigns, alongside the rest of Bush's "iron triangle," the big-picture guy Karl Rove, and Bush's personal guardian, Karen Hughes. I asked Miller how to read the shake-up. Some of his observations:

.....

3. The move is further proof of the sway of Anita Perry. She helped persuade Perry to run, and she earlier played a key role in getting him to issue the controversial HPV vaccine mandate. "This is Anita-driven, not Rick-driven. Anita is the one who said, 'We've got to make changes.'"

I flunked nothing. Rove helped bring Perry into the GOP. At this point, establishment republicans will work behind the scenes to insure those outside their elite circle will not get the nomination. If Albaugh works for Perry, you can bet Rove, Hughes and others from the old Bush administration will be on board.

I have a simple question for you: Is Cain pro-life, or not? He tells two different versions.

There will be more of your misreading of the facts coming because the race is going to overtake your guy and your manufacturing needs to ramp up. So far, we see you all can’t read, but it’s going to get worse for ya’. Counting on October, 2011 to pay off in November, 2012 tells me your boots are way too tight. Perry has comeback written all over him, and you are in trouble. From the sound of your yowling, it is already starting to show just how much. Whoo Hoo! Rick rocks it and has the record to prove it whether you like it, or not, it’s gonna get fun. Brace yourself.

You all have entirely flunked the reading of the article. Joe Albaugh, singularly, worked the Bush campaign. Rove and Hughes are clearly in the Romney camp where they will remain

You people need to get your story straight. From your ol' buddy normy's post #40: My point is that political operatives jump from team to team all day long and twice on Sundays.

As I stated upthread, Rove is working to the establishment GOP. He'll be happy with anyone as long as it isn't some outsider. I guess the Perry camp hasn't got all the communication problems solve yet...

You all have entirely flunked the reading of the article. Joe Albaugh, singularly, worked the Bush campaign. Rove and Hughes are clearly in the Romney camp where they will remain, and Allbaugh was associated with them only in the Bush campaign.

They've also flunked vetting the freakin' source.

It's The New Republic, for crying out loud.

They'd very much like for us to nominate Romney, as they are in the tank for Obama.

I don't believe anything I read coming from this publication.

Anita was probably behind Perry using an executive order to mandate Gardasil.

Yikes.

The only yowling going on in this thread comes from you Perrybots who’ve had the real Perry shoved in your faces. His wife’s running the campaign, and they’ve brought in former Bush campaign advisers to refocus. Just because this article doesn’t state categorically that Rove is involved, it’s easy enough to read between the lines.

We’ve had one round of compassionate conservatism in the past decade. We don’t need another. And if you think you can argue this one away, think again. The cat’s out of the bag.

In your finest dreams! LOL! The Bushies would love to have a little chat with you on your case of all yak and chest puffing manufactured relationships. Please, flack it. You guys are awesone at thin air and it’s only beginning. I am so excited to watch you founder on the kool aide. Do you like pink, or blue?

No, I believe it is poorly written, but it is just that one of the three points to W’s triangle officially working for Perry.

That the Perry and Romney campaigns are more closely coordinated than is let on, I believe, fits with more being made of a Perry-Bush feud than is so.

Perry hires on some tough new talent
AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry is working to inject new life into his lagging presidential effort with the addition of tough political veterans including Joe Allbaugh, former campaign manager for George W. Bush and part of the former president’s vaunted “Iron Triangle.”
snip
Allbaugh “will bring his Bush and Giuliani experience to ensure the campaign is focused, frugal and effective as we move towards election dates and votes being cast,” Sullivan said. “Augmenting, not replacing, existing staff.”

A source familiar with the decision, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Perry personally called Allbaugh for help. Allbaugh, who with Karl Rove and Karen Hughes made up Bush’s disciplined core team known as the “Iron Triangle,” was campaign manager for Bush’s 2000 effort and advised Rudy Guiliani’s 2008 campaign.

After announcing an expansion of his campaign team to include former President George W. Bush’s 2000 campaign manager Joe Allbaugh and three other veteran GOP operatives, Rick Perry is in South Carolina Tuesday to announce his national flat tax plan. He’s also launching a TV ad blitz in Iowa.

Fabrizio, Anderson and Warfield are all veterans of the Bob Dole 1996 campaign with Perry top strategist Dave Carney — who is no stranger to hardball tactics himself — meaning they’re not just getting to know each other now. And Allbaugh is a veteran name that the GOP donor community is familiar with. …

Updated, 4:50 p.m.

Gov. Rick Perry’s Texas-bred campaign team is getting a shot of new blood.

Joe Allbaugh, who ran George W. Bush’s 2000 campaign, will become a “senior adviser” to Perry, the campaign announced Monday. Sources say Allbaugh, known as a stern and disciplined manager, will play a central role in trying to get the Texas governor back on top of the GOP field.

Perry also announced, as reported in various media outlets over the last 24 hours, the addition of six other nationally known consultants. Tony Frabrizio, a pollster and former strategist for 1996 GOP nominee Bob Dole, and Fred Maas, who has worked on the campaigns of Dole, John McCain and others, will also take “senior adviser” titles, the campaign said.

I thought that was resolved. Wasn’t there a thread from a day or so ago that quoted Cain as saying he believed abortion should be outlawed on the federal level? It got sidetracked by some troll who tried to argue there aren’t any federal laws against abortion, so such a proposal could never work blah blah.

Anyway, it seems clear to me Cain is anti abortion, no question. The confusion seemed to stem from an interview he gave where it appeared he said it’s a “personal choice”. Later examination of the context of the quote showed he was saying it should be a personal choice whether or not a woman who was the victim of a rape should be forced to keep the baby ( as opposed to being able to put it up for adoption ).

I’m pretty sure these are the facts of the case.

I suspect that's the real story here, a story many here will be unwilling to face. The GOP has their back to the wall with the Tea Party's assent into politics. They'll pull out all the stops to get an establishment player elected. The Bush/Perry feud has been overplayed, and even if it did exist at some level at some time, it's nothing compared to maintaining control over the party. Without that, nothing will matter.

Yikes! bcsco, is all sensitive! You are in the kitchen now aren’t cha’. It IS coming, you know. Cain is darling at the chat. He really is. But given the times where WILL he dig up the BEEN THERE DONE THAT record that Perry owns? Cain will have to chat it up. That’s all he has. We will be having more fun in coming days. More than you want, but it’s high time it’s our turn. We’ve listened to you guys ride on crowing about an unknown with no record. Perry will be setting you down on cactus pins here before long, because the FACT is he is the ONE, the only ONE with the conservative record that speaks. Get over it. Cain is the chat and Perry is the RECORD that voters will FINALLY get to see. Beats your oratory and Cains too. %:D

“Perry has sometimes been critical of Bush, and some Bush loyalists supported Perry challenger U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison when he sought re-election in 2010. Consultant and lobbyist Bill Miller said Allbaugh’s move ‘probably is a sign that the Bush thing was overblown to start with ….. Allbaugh, if he’d gotten the word not to do it, wouldn’t do it. He’s loyal.’”
