Businessman Herman Cain is now atop the field of Republican White House hopefuls, squeaking past former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in the latest CBS News/New York Times poll.

Cain garnered 25 percent support of Republican primary voters in the poll released Tuesday, compared to Romney's 21 percent.

In early October, the two men were tied at 17 percent.

By the way, does anybody know what’s behind the Newt & Cain willing to participate in the upcoming Lincoln-Douglas debate?

In the interview with Piers Morgan, Cain said the two candidates he had the most respect for and would make a good president were Gingrich and Romney. I wouldn't expect fireworks between the two.

Incidentally, if Cain came on FR and posted what he said about Romney in the interview, would he be ZOTed?

Willard is a big AH with unbridled ambition, willing to do or say anything in his quest to become a Mormon god. We are better off with 4 more years of the sock puppet than that prick.

-----------------------------------------------------------

If that sock puppet's name is Obama then I'd have to say...no, we are not better off with Obama than Romney. Obama HAS to go.

Cain is teflon. So far. He IS gaffe-prone even I (a supporter) can admit that however, people LIKE the man. Voters can forgive a hell of a lot when they genuinely like a person.

IMO, (not my preference at VP) the ticket will be Cain/Romney. This ticket will (if current economic conditions remain or worsen) win at lest 35 states. It could be a REALLY early night come November 2012.

Cain has made gaffes and mis-quotes and mis-statements. But most people trust him.

The way I put the same point is that Cain’s sin is that he actually answers the question the best he can, without changing the subject or providing a canned answers.

It gets him into little bits of trouble, but that he can get out of because people believe him.

Didn’t Newt also get in trouble over comments pertaining to Obama-care? I’ll have to look it up...

All the attacks on Romney are being shelved UNTIL THE GENERAL ELECTION.
Then they will desimate him.

This is the guy Rove said has faded, right? The one Hume and foxnews said is done?

Why, yes. Yes it is. The very same guy. :-)

Fox News seems determined to dive headlong into irrelevancy via this election cycle. I watch it less and less.

I hope they won’t attack one another just so that other GOP candidates can benefit from this.

That would be out of character for both of them. More likely, this will be a very issue oriented, "real" debate, and one which raises the stature of both of them.

Of course, that won't stop the media from declaring Cain the loser, and that it marks the end of his candidacy (a pronouncement that will be as accurate as the other 999 times they made that same prediction).

Agreed. People like him and trust him and know he’s no career, spit and polished pol.

They cut him slack expecting he will put together the team to address isssues and solve problems according to fundamental American principle and the constitution as best he can.

They look at his background as an Americna outside of politics to derive this impression and expectation.\

They know the MSM and the establishment pols, particularly the DNC and RINOS are waiting to pounce on any mis-step and try and use that as cause to defeat him. but the Tea Party types have thicker skins than that and are not going along with it anymore. They will decide for themselves...not based on ABC, CBS, CNN...or Karl Rove or Brit Hume for that matter.

Today’s mantra is no longer “the most trusted man in US News.” That person today is the individual themself.

I think it's very important for him to at least do well in this coming debate with Newt. He doesn't have to win, he just has to show he has a decent understanding of why conservative policies are right in all the important areas.

I certainly don't expect Cain to win this debate, if he can hold his own against Newt, he'll be doing very well.

Hoping for the best. It takes guts to debate Newt, will be a nail biter.

I was wondering the same thing. And why no "front runner" Romney? What are the circumstances behind this debate, will have to look it up when I get home from work.

“Rove and Hume just yesterday assured us that Cain is crashing. Rove even specifically said that Cain had peaked between 10/6 and 10/10 and is now tanking in the polls.

What gives?”

Wishful thinking? Old mentality of times gone by? Arrogance?
May be a combination of all above.

What was his abortion goof? I understood exactly what he was saying.

As for his other alleged goofs: If they were in fact goofs, his star should be fading. No? Instead, despite a recent desperation poll showing Romney leading, Cain’s star continues to ascend. Why is that? I think it is because the man has demonstrated he is so much more than a quibble here or a quibble there.

All real leaders make mistakes because assuming leadership is a risk. Great leaders are not discarded because they are far greater than the sum of a few mistakes along the way.

“Gotcha” politics and an expectation of perfection in presidential candidates is exactly what keeps most otherwise good people out of politics.

Oh, and how about the other Pubbie/conservative presidential primary candidates? Are you implying they’re more perfect than Cain—that they are not making “mistakes”?

Let’s see, we have Romney saying he can’t prove man-made global warming is real, but he believes in it. That should have been fatal. The we have Perrywinkle saying that people who don’t believe illegal alien children are entitled to free schooling are “heartless”. Should have been fatal.

Ya know, if you’re gonna apply an impossible to meet standard to Cain, it should apply to all candidates equally.
