First, there were Lincoln and Douglas.
This year, we have Cain and Gingrich.
The two Georgians seeking the Republican nomination for president have accepted an invitation from the Texas Patriots PAC to meet in The Woodlands on Nov. 5 for a free-wheeling and moderator-free debate on the major issues in the 2012 presidential campaign.
The two participants former Godfathers Pizza CEO Herman Cain and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich have gained ground in the polls following their performance in the first eight debates of the GOP campaign season. But Gingrich in particular has been critical of what he considers gotcha questions from reporters and the nasty tone of the most recent debate in Las Vegas.
This event is a response to remarks by Speaker Gingrich regarding his frustration with the format of the other presidential debates, said Bill OSullivan, a Texas Tea Party Patriots PAC volunteer. We believe this is the best opportunity for candidates to have substantive discussion since the Lincoln-Douglas Debates.
Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas held a series of debates in 1858 when they were running for an Illinois Senate race. The debates became famous for the in-depth discuss of issues and the high level of political discourse. Democrat Douglas defeated Republican Lincoln in the 1858 Senate race. But Lincoln defeated Douglas and two other candidates in the 1860 presidential race.
The Cain-Gingrich event, sponsored by the Texas Tea Party Patriots PAC, will be held at 6 p.m. CST on Nov. 5 at The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center. The Patriots are based in The Woodlands.

Hear, hear. Why are others not jumping at this? I would think Perry would want to try a different approach.
BINGO. Your thinking paralleled mine exactly. I first thought "uh-oh" for Cain, but you're right. Newt would NOT make Cain look bad. First, because Cain's a pretty darned good debater himself. Second because he wouldn't want to alienate the Cain supporters. And third because, as you said, he's clearly made a decision (for lots of reasons I imagine) to focus on Obummer.
I PRAY this is televised somwehere, somehow.
I'm about a 5 hour drive away (in Longview, TX) and am seriously thinking about driving down!
Hank
Me too! He'd slice and dice 'em.
Ummm... no. The topic is:
"Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich agree to Lincoln-Douglas style debate in The Woodlands"
----
OK, but surely you can see how that would be confusing. ;-)
Hank
Agree. Nothing I’ve seen from Cain tells me that’s his style. Besides which, it would be stupid at this point and in this venue...and Cain’s not stupid.
Hank
I do hope it happens. I think at some point the Repubs (the organization or 2 people of Republican persuasion) have to do something like this to break the MSM stranglehold on the format. It does need to be live and unfiltered. If directed the proper way, which is towards deficient liberal policies first and then each one’s ideas, it could be successful. Throw out the attacks on who mowed who’s yard and who had a graffittied rock at their place, and let’s debate ideas.
OOPS!!! Guess I won’t be going after all. Ticket Prices: $200, $500 and $1,000.
Well, my tagline says it all: Gingrich/Cain: The Dream Ticket in 2012
“If Cain spends his time detailing all the well documented moral deficiencies of Newt, and describes in gory detail how Newt has been corrupted by the Democrats in Washington, Newts campaign may be finished.”
Interesting theory, but I’ve yet to see Cain go hard after anyone. He’s been a perfect gentlemen up there in these debates. So I highly doubt he would drag up Newt’s past personal issues. They do like each other, and Cain said a few debates ago that he’d choose Newt out of anyone on stage for his VP. I just don’t see either one of them attacking each other. Their on the same team.
I think that has been posted to that person before. And probably will be again! LOL
He already said that he would not say no. I guess it would depend on who is asking.

BLITZER: One final question. Give me a yes or a no. If one of the other Republican candidates gets the nomination and asks you to be the vice presidential running mate, is it a yes from you or a no?
GINGRICH: Well, it wouldn’t be a no.
Me too. That’s been my dream ticket since Sept 17th.
This give them both a chance to flesh out their ideas and give more in depth explanations.
Does this mean the Tea Party is still racist?
That was followed, IIRC in the first so called debate when Cain was asked, “deep dish or thin crust?” I clicked off and haven't watched their silly manufactured food fights since.
Cain/Gingrich in substantive debate will set the marker for presidential media events. It should mark the end of baloney formats on ABCNBCCBSMSNBCCNN . . .
Actually, it may be a brilliant move, as it`ll force Cain to up his game .. especially in the foreign policy arena.. against a superior debater. If Cain plays this right, he`ll gain from it.
