First, there were Lincoln and Douglas.
This year, we have Cain and Gingrich.
The two Georgians seeking the Republican nomination for president have accepted an invitation from the Texas Patriots PAC to meet in The Woodlands on Nov. 5 for a free-wheeling and moderator-free debate on the major issues in the 2012 presidential campaign.
The two participants former Godfathers Pizza CEO Herman Cain and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich have gained ground in the polls following their performance in the first eight debates of the GOP campaign season. But Gingrich in particular has been critical of what he considers gotcha questions from reporters and the nasty tone of the most recent debate in Las Vegas.
This event is a response to remarks by Speaker Gingrich regarding his frustration with the format of the other presidential debates, said Bill OSullivan, a Texas Tea Party Patriots PAC volunteer. We believe this is the best opportunity for candidates to have substantive discussion since the Lincoln-Douglas Debates.
Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas held a series of debates in 1858 when they were running for an Illinois Senate race. The debates became famous for the in-depth discuss of issues and the high level of political discourse. Democrat Douglas defeated Republican Lincoln in the 1858 Senate race. But Lincoln defeated Douglas and two other candidates in the 1860 presidential race.
The Cain-Gingrich event, sponsored by the Texas Tea Party Patriots PAC, will be held at 6 p.m. CST on Nov. 5 at The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center. The Patriots are based in The Woodlands.

You guys are not getting it. Under Lincoln-Douglas, a candidate basically gets all the time he wants to explain whatever he wants. A series of interspersed speeches. Not very exciting in terms of fireworks but very informative.
This is suicidal for Cain. He has neither the breadth nor depth to debate Newt, to say nothing of being POTUS.
Wow!
HermaNewtics IS possible!
In that case, I DO have to wonder if this is a tandem deal (I would definitely, definitely be excited!!!
Let the cat fights begin.........
The group has contacted the campaigns of Texas Gov. Rick Perry and ex-Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to see if they would participate in a separate Lincoln-Douglas-style debate.

“If you can’t take the heat...”
And they like each other.
And they agree on much.
So neither is going to try to hurt the other.
It will be an exploration of ideas, not a blood letting.
Let me provide you with an alternative view. It could be suicide for Newt. If Cain spends his time detailing all the well documented moral deficiencies of Newt, and describes in gory detail how Newt has been corrupted by the Democrats in Washington, Newt’s campaign may be finished.
My guess is it will be a respectful and educational discussion of issues. Cain and Newt both like and respect each other, so it could be a plus for both of them.
Newt is not about to try and destroy Cain nor embarrass him. That is not Newts style, until he gets to Obama, then nothing is sacred.
I believe this event will expose the two real leaders going forth.
Ummm... no. The topic is:
"Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich agree to Lincoln-Douglas style debate in The Woodlands"
Do you really think Gingrich would accept the number two spot?
yep. its a clever trap allright. but only for Obama.
I know the debate is the Woodlands is Cain and Gingrich. I would like to see Gingrich challenge Romney to a debate. No one has really challenged Romney thus far.
Why on Earth would anyone think that Gingrich would accept the number two spot?
Gingrich is a career politician. He was Speaker of the House... two steps away from President. He's got a huge ego (like most politicians running for President) and his ego is larger than most given his resume.
Gingrich knows that he'd have to teach and coach Cain for at least a year, and I don't think he'd want to take on that task.
BTW, I'm a huge fan of Herman Cain.
The other article I read laid out three domestic monetary topics. There is no room in that agenda for personal attacks.
I don’t think Cain would do such a thing, anyway.
Yes.
Cain will not do this. In the past, he's been in a position to launch personal attacks, but he doesn't because he's a gentleman.
If it is a true debate the opposing side has a chance for rebuttal, and Newt will cream Cain, nuff said.
Christopher Hitchens said the first time he met Newt was for a debate on C-Span. Hitchens said he thought, Newt was some hick congressman from Georgia and the would take him out in short order.
Hitchens said at the end of that half hour, he had a terrific headache and his head was spinning. He admitted he never stood a chance from the start and he got stomped by Newt
I don’t know....I’m not sure Callista is ready for the demands of the White House (she wasn’t ready for the demands of the campaign). A Cain/Gingrich ticket would kill the race card once and for all, and Cain would take all the slings and arrows of the first four years. And then both Gingriches would be in a better position to run for POTUS again.
I, for one, would love to see the old Senate dogs have to defer to Gingrich presiding over the Senate - and breaking any tie votes.
