At the top of Monday's NBC Today, co-host Matt Lauer touted a new plan to address the housing crisis: "After a series of foreign policy victories, President Obama is hitting the road to sell his plan to help turn around the struggling economy and today the focus is on the housing market." Lauer later wondered to chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd if the plan would, "help politically?"
Todd declared: "Well, it could....emphasize the fact that they can't get anything done through Congress, right? That Republicans won't do anything....Mitt Romney said of the housing crisis, 'You know what? We're not allowing foreclosures to happen fast enough.' So this is a two-fer, as far as the White House is concerned. They feel like they can talk about housing but also make the Republicans look like they're out of touch on that."
However, Lauer began his discussion with Todd by pointing out criticism of the plan: "...it says that it will help make it easier for them to refinance those mortgages. Already critics say it won't work." Todd acknowledged a major flaw: "...it's similar to the plan the President unveiled over two years ago....The problem is, with the plan initially and with this one, is Matt, you cannot force the banks to do this."
Turning to the political impact, Lauer dismissed that fact: "Even though you can't force the banks to do it, if you're sitting at home and you're underwater in your mortgage and you hear it coming out of the President's mouth and you're in a state like Nevada or Arizona or California or Florida, and those aren't accidental states."

And even more startling is that NBC ADMITS THIS!!
As one of the story commenters noted: "Everything is analysized for its positive or negative impact on Obama's re-election. All else -- includng the unemployed and under-employed -- are props."
NBC has a ratings plan that won’t work....but sounds good at the board meetings.
Violating the Constitution by bypassing Congress in now good politics?
Matt Lauer must be doing bong hits, I'd be curious to hear what these "foreign policy victories" are. Just like we all predicted, Hussein is a total amateur who is driving our allies nuts and appeasing our enemies. To NBC, bowing to Saudi Arabia and repeated apologies to China are "foreign policy victories".
Just curious. What string of foreign policy victories has Obama overseen? Libya, ok we paid for most of, but what other diplomatic successes has Obama achieved?
There's a real chance it could be the Democrat Party changed forever.
But going back to the mortgage thing, I was gratified when I learned how freaking hard it was to get approved in that last goobermint drill-down. This looks to be the same way.
And yet they say that Cain’s 9-9-9 plan won’t work and that he’s an idiot for pushing it.
They can’t “make” the banks do it but if the loans are guaranteed by the tax payer I don’t see why they won’t. What will actually happen is all the loans will be switched around....BOA’s loans go to Chase, Chase loans go to Wells Fargo....so now they got the “scary” loans covered by the government.
ONLY when democrats are doing it.
Republicans attempting to even think about such things are branded by the press as Taliban, Nazis, Dictators, Tyrants, and all-round suppressers of Freedom and Liberty.
