Obama touts foreign policy successes in Iraq, Libya (Nobel Peace Prize winner, Mr. Cool)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama sought on Saturday to cast himself as a strong leader on foreign policy, highlighting a U.S. pullout from Iraq and the death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi as success stories.

In a message Obama is likely to push in his 2012 re-election campaign, he said his leadership had made it possible to turn the page on a decade of war and refocus on bolstering the U.S. economy and paying down the national debt.

Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address that Gaddafi's death and the announcement that all U.S. troops would be removed from Iraq this year were "powerful reminders of how we've renewed American leadership in the world."

The emphasis on foreign policy comes as confidence in Obama's stewardship of the economy has fallen sharply, causing his overall approval ratings to slide to around 42 percent, the lowest of his presidency.

With the economy's woes weighing heavily on Americans' minds, Obama may have trouble gaining political traction from his message on foreign policy.

The killing in May of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden by a U.S. Navy Seal team in Pakistan brought only a temporary boost to Obama's poll numbers.

Obama mentioned bin Laden in the radio speech and said victories against al Qaeda -- along with the policies toward Iraq and Libya -- were "part of a larger story" of success.

"In Libya, the death of Muammar Gaddafi showed that our role in protecting the Libyan people, and helping them break free from a tyrant, was the right thing to do," he said.

"In Iraq, we've succeeded in our strategy to end the war," Obama added.

Thanks to Obama’s “foreign policy” his bowing to the moolahs; appeasement; announcing strategy publicly allowing our country to be put under the auspices of the United Nations in wars not declared by Congress; his disregard and shameless shunning of our only ally in the Mid East, Israel; ordering assassinations! Don’t look now but thanks to Obama, the enemy is us!

Did anybody besides me notice Obama’s omission of the fact that the the withdrawal of all US Forces by the end of 2011 was negotiated by George W. Bush?

Does anyone think Libya is going to be “better” now? Is their any plan to deal with the after math? From what I’ve read it’s going to be a bloodbath between regime loyalists and factions of the rebels/muslim brotherhood.

At least Bush had the gonads to have a plan after removing Hussein. Obama just made a soft hand off to NATO and looked the other way. Perhaps he had other motives (Muslim bros) but it’s going to be a big s—thole for the time being.

The media hasn’t mentioned that since sometime in mid 2008 when it was first and last announced.

Republicans Push for U.S. Role in Rebuilding Libya

“They’re willing to reimburse us. It’s not a matter of money,” Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told Fox News, making a tough sales pitch in an era of high unemployment and increasing austerity.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., noted that the Libyans’ top request was for help in tending to the country’s wounded and that the French and Germans have reached agreements with the new government to treat them.

You would think that at least a Guest Commentator of Fox would bring it up, but I watched most of the morning (Before Football) and nothing.

If this turns out bad, they will bring up the fact that it was Bush who negotiated the troop withdrawal by the end of 2011.

Yes, of course, then they will remember it like it was yesterday. I don’t watch much Fox News anymore because it seems like all the other lib networks with some conservative sprinkles on top for flavor. Special Report is about it and even that isn’t that special.

Claiming the power-change in Libya as a “foreign policy” success is as about as smart as Carter claiming the power-change in Iran as one of his “foreign policy” successes!

Once the atrocities of the new government are accurately reported, the Arabs will have ANOTHER reason to hate America, as Obama claimed that we helped put these ruthless bastards in power! Mark my words!

I trust these ‘successes’ will become very obvious by election 2012 time.

Look up the definition of Community Organizer.

How does the GOP's definition of "Community Organizer" differ from Margaret Mead's definition?

Margaret Mead's definition is: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has"

Yes he did. It was during the speech in Bagdad when he deflected a shoe that was tossed at him. President Bush set the withdrawal date for 12/31/11 I believe.
