Reg Weaver receives a state pension of $242,657 a year, not because it's based on his last salary as a teacher, but because he gets to count the $300,000-plus check he made as president of the National Education Association.
It's one of the highest pensions paid by the heavily indebted Illinois Teachers' Retirement System.
Weaver, whose last salary as a south suburban teacher was $60,000, is one of 116 active and inactive members of the Teachers' Retirement System who can base their retirement income on their salaries and service in the National Education Association, the Illinois Education Association, the Illinois Federation of Teachers or the Illinois Association of School Boards, another interest group that lobbies in Springfield. It is a tiny subset of the 360,000 participants in the state system.
Previous investigations by the Tribune and WGN-TV have shown how city union leaders are dramatically boosting their retirement benefits by tapping into Chicago's public pensions. But they are not the only ones benefiting from legislative changes.

Is there any job at all that deserves a pension that big?
Did Weaver get paid his $300,000 salary by the state or by the NEA? If the latter, then his Illinois retirement should be based on his school service, and the rest of his pension should be paid by the NEA out of teacher's union dues.
This too will be corrected during the coming revolution.
Reporter: "Mr. Sutton, why are you such a fervent government union supporter?"
Reg Weaver: "Because that is where the money is."
Good for Illinois. Give the Illinois taxpayers what they voted for.
All teachers union officers do is funnel dues money from teachers to Democrat politicians and make sure teachers and other school employees are available to “volunteer” for political campaigns and political rallies and events. In Wisconsin teachers called in sick to occupy the State Capitol and nothing happened. That is what teachers union officials do.
The Democrats are proud they can confiscate this much taxpayer money to pay to one of their political operatives. They only wish it could have been more.
“The state law that opened the door to allowing union leaders to tie their union salaries and service to state teachers pensions took effect in 1987, signed by Republican Gov. James R. Thompson after he easily won his fourth and final term.”
Pension is paid for with the ‘taxed by the rich politicians’ working class productive contributors.
All hail their Union masters!
Freaking criminal in a sane world. Somebody needs to ask the occupiers what they think about this one.
There are many good, conscientious teachers out there in ga-ga land. Doesn’t this just make your blood boil?
Any socialist asshat can be the head of the teacher’s union.
A union thug with a quarter of a million a year pension. These phony balony, plastic banana commie wannabes have the nerve to whine about “the rich”. Somebody needs to tell “Reg” that he’s one of “the rich”. Where are the limousine libs with their guillotine?
Now Barky has to come through with a stimules to help bail out the teacher pensions, again.
