‘Leaders’ who fail the Awlaki test
NY Post ^ | Oct 10, 2011 | M. Zuhdi Jasser

The just assassination of Anwar al-Awlaki was a defining moment for American Muslims. We should have been leading the cheers -- but instead many of our self-appointed “spokesmen” squandered their bandwidth.

This one is personal. As one of us, Awlaki’s extreme form of Islamism swayed many Muslims to hate America and the West. Worse -- in flagrant defiance of the central tenets of our Islam -- he taught many Muslims to diminish the value of human life.

Yet where most Americans saw a traitor who turned on his nation in order to fight our sons and daughters on the battlefield, too many American Islamic groups were steeped in denial.

The Dar al-Hijra mosque in northern Virginia, Awlaki’s last stomping ground before leaving the US, issued statements defending his pre-2002 interfaith work and insinuating that it was torture in Yemeni prisons that radicalized Awlaki. And while the Council on American-Islamic Relations “repudiated Awlaki’s incitement to violence,” it also “urged inquiry into the constitutional issues raised by the assassination.”

What does it matter that Awlaki was once a US citizen? Neither by our Constitution nor by Islam am I ashamed to rejoice in his death.

Easy to denounce someone once he's dead and gone.

“Easy to denounce someone once he’s dead and gone.”

umm...the point of the article is that people aren’t, so apparently, not so easy for them or they would have

Muslims by their very nature untrustworthy. If they all of a sudden started to denounce radical Islam I for one would not believe them.

The best thing they can do is stop breathing at this point.

Does not “your” islam come from the koran???
Then Awlaki was indeed spreading islam.
islam is a death and oppression cult as directed by the koran

you are exactly correct. there is only ONE Islam.
the four schools had the “doors closed” hundreds of years ago. the differences are miniscule.
even between Sunni and Shia the differences are much much less than between Baptist and Catholic.

the only one’s “misunderstanding” Islam, are the true moderates, if any. usually, statements like this are simply taquiyya:
“ Awlaki’s extreme form of Islamism swayed many Muslims to hate America and the West. “

...there is only ONE Islam. and it forbids tolerating other religions, except temporarily when it benefits Islam.
the nicer “Medina” verses are all abrogated by the later Mecca verses. especially the last 3: 5,8, and 9.
(the Quran is not assembled by chronology, but by length of chapter... adding to the ease of taquiyya.)

Not to denigrate this gentleman or his beliefs, but Islam has a long, long way to go to convince the rest of us that it espouses anything resembling respect for human life.
