Rick Perry's Support for a Flat Tax Cheers Steve Forbes (Forbes, Gramm advising Perry)
WSJ ^ | Oct 19, 2011 | John D. McKinnon

Rick Perry's embrace of a flat tax makes the tough-talking Texas governor the unlikely political heir to Steve Forbes, the nerdy publisher and erstwhile presidential candidate.

Mr. Forbes, who ran in 1996 and 2000 and now is advising the Perry camp, said that the "concept remains the same" as his own flat tax plan from the 1990s.

Many folks are really cheapening the Presidency by being so obsessed with debates.

The media is hyping this lie about the debates being the only measure of a presidential candidate because they control the outcomes of the debates; proping up who they want in and attacking those they want out.

Generally, they use the debates to pit one against the other to ruin Republicans’ public image so it will be easier for their political party in the general election.

Perry seems to now be stealing stuff from other candidates. I guess he figures that 9-9-9 got Cain to the top - he might as well steal the idea from him and try to climb back out of the abyss.

Its not stealing it, He's got Graham and Forbes (2 men who ran on flat tax platforms) advising his campaign. They both ran with this in the 1990's.

“Your missing the point. Perry is trying to morph now and use Cains premise for tax reform to get votes.”

Did I miss something here? At what point did Cain copyright his plan?

Furthermore, from what I see, Perry is proposing a FLAT TAX, which is a different plan than 9-9-9. Some elements may be the same, but the overall plan is not. And I don’t see where Perry is claiming credit for someone else’s idea. His campaign in openly acknowledged the advice of Steve Forbes, one of the original creators of this plan.

Lastly, what are the Cain folks so worried about anyway? Perry’s only like 2% in the polls or something, isn’t that what they’ve been saying. Why get all exercised when he comes out with a plan, when many of them were criticizing him a couple weeks ago for not having a plan yet?

Perry ain’t really for the flat tax.

Herman on the other hand has been in the thick of the fight to move toward a flat tax for years!

I don’t remember it that way. I remember Forbes was just an incredibly uncharismatic guy and while he’d hoped to get traction with that issue, got none.

I do remember it, Bob Dole and Phil Graham (who had his own flat tax plan) both attacked him on it, and Bush trying to indirectly attack him on it, by offering his own tax plan in 2000 (McCain did attack Forbes on it though).

HOwever, that said, Grahams attacks on Forbes was simply 2 guys attacking each other over different flat tax plans, they agreed in principle (though it was really really really strange how vicious they were with each others plans).

Apparently Rick doesn’t believe in preparing for debates or campaigns. >>>>>>>>>

Ol Rick is spread kinda thin because he currently has a job as Governor of Texas while Cain and Romney are retirees

Do you think Palin would take a veep spot? I wouldn’t have thought so before, but with Perry she might.

She wouldn’t have to bear the brunt of the heat on herself or her family.

I agree. 999 includes a Sales Tax (not a VAT) that would be paid by all for any new purchases. Suppose they wanted to raise it? Can you hear the screams coming from the left? And from the right?

The political prostitutes want to get re-elected, they can't even get behind Oblame-o's Jobs Bill for the taxes it raises and the debt it re-explodes. Bite-size or not.

If we could roll back tax collections to 2006 and get spending to reflect that, we'd be on the path to correct the madness that passes for current fiscal policy. 1.3 Trillion more spent, than is collected each year, will wreck this country.

Barack Marx Alinsky would like nothing more than for this 'crisis' to happen on his watch because he has a plan to 'opportunize it' when it does. Hell, he's already picked out and is naming his scapegoats: The Tea Party, corporations, banks (Jews), greedy businesses, and conservatives in general.

To borrow from Moochelle, "The first time my pride in my country sank to a level I never could have imagined was three years after her husband was elected."

Perry morph?? Perry has been in the public eye for many years.

His policies, positions and actions are well known.

Try not to be ridiculous. It’s embarrassing.

If his obligations to the State of Texas are getting in the way of being prepared, maybe he should step down and fully commit himself. He owes it to his supporters, and his poll numbers could probably use a boost, as could his media appearances.

That is one thing that scares me about Cain. Is he gonna be an affirmative action, entitlement guy if he gets in office?

This modifying of his slick 999 plan is a warning sign.

“if you have ears, then let them hear.”

I haven’t read on down the thread, so I have no idea what people here think of Steve Forbes, but I have always loved Mr. Forbes and his flat tax plan. I’m glad to see this concept out again, and hopefully we’ll see some honest fiscally conservative changes in our country.

Gramm might have been a good president but he was a TERRIBLE candidate. As you say, I don’t remember much animus on their conception of a flat tax, only fine point discussion.

Dole only went with the flat tax when he was desperate at the end, as I recall, so it wasn’t so much that he was anti-Forbes as he took up the mantle late in the game.

But you’re right—having been reminded, now I DO recall Bush bashing him on it. I still forget what Bush had to complain about, but I remember he had something he disliked about it and he smacked Forbes on it at some point.

You highlight, ridiculously in red, "A VAT is essentially a national sale tax" while dropping the color from the crucial "assessed at each stage of (production)."

That last part is critical to the very definition of a VAT.

Cain's 999 doesn't do that at all so 999 has no VAT.

You're just a despicable liar and a troll.

I was a flat tax fan in '96 and '00. I recall Perry was already a Flat or FairTax guy before running so this shouldn't surprise anyone.

I don't see how Perry will sell it. It'll be demonized as a tax break on the 1% blah, blah.

The Flat Tax has the benefit (or liability?) of not being a brand new proposal, unlike 999, and not having the added sales tax component which has too many in an uproar.

On the downside, it won't have the sales tax so there's no capturing underground economy money. That part of 999 is appealing.

We'll see what Perry's version of a Flat Tax does on the low end and with deductions and whether this is income tax only reform or if it's deeper.

It's all academic though, Obama will win reelection.
