Scientists in Britain face being barred from developing life-saving treatments after a court ruled it is immoral to use embryos to produce stem cells.
The European Court of Justice has decreed that patenting any treatment using the cells is commercial exploitation and contrary to morality.
Scientists warned the devastating decision will stop pioneering treatments for degenerative diseases such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons being developed in the UK, with potentially catastrophic consequences for the multi-million pound biotechnology industry.
But pro-life groups, who argue it is immoral to experiment with embryos to advance medicine, welcomed the ruling.
The decision, made unanimously by 13 judges in Luxembourg, follows a case brought by Greenpeace in Germany against Professor Oliver Brüstle at the University of Bonn.
Professor Brüstle filed a patent with the German government in 1997 to convert embryonic stem cells into nerve cells to help patients with Parkinsons disease.
Greenpeace challenged it and the case went to the highest court in Germany and then Luxembourg.
The resulting 10-page judgement prohibits patenting any process which involves removing a stem cell from and then destroying a human embryo defined as anything capable of commencing the process of development of a human being.
It states: Patents may not be granted for inventions whose commercial exploitation would be contrary to morality... In particular patents shall not be awarded for uses of human embryos for industrial or commercial purpose.

Speaking of medical experiments, guess how ancient Greeks measured the amount of blood in a human body.
If these researchers were serious they would spend their time in adult stem cells.
Oh my gosh! I am so sorry to hear that! You are a strong person. I think I’d probably curl up into a ball and be angry with God - at least for a while. The fact that you can still praise God and keep your faith in a difficult time like this speaks to the kind of people you are your wife are. I will include you, your wife, and your family in my prayers. I’ll ask that God hold you in his loving arms during this difficult time. My condelences for your loss. :(
condelences = condolences
Amazing. This is worth investigating. It’s nearly surreal.
If it is as it seems, I’m for it.
which our "pro-choice" media try very hard to keep from making common knowledge to the general public.
Embryonic cells carry the message for an entire human being's life span of a potential hundred years. No scientist can break one of those cells down into a controllable mass of specialized cells for any kind of therapeutic benefit.
That is so awful.
My prayers for you and your family
Me too!!! Greenpeace, a seemingly liberal organization that is actually doing what it is suppose to do, championing peace for people of the womb! Who would have thought? Praise The LORD.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss and join with all the others here lifting you and the loved ones up to God for His peace, blessing and guidance as you deal with your daughter’s homegoing.
She died in a car crash. We have been asking for prayers for the driver of the car, Melissa be remembered in people's prayers as well. She will carry a heavy burden even though it was just an accident that might have been avoided with a more experienced driver. She was my daughter Hope's friend and as such will find no condemnation here.
Hope was a beautiful and talented young lady, and we'll miss her until we meet again. She had a youtube channel here
Thanks again everyone. Free Republic is such a great place! I really didn't mean to hijack this thread. For me right now, FR has been a place to escape a little from other thoughts.
What a beautiful tribute to your daughter! And of course I join in prayer for Melissa!
What appears to be banned is Patents for “commercial or industrial exploitation” if embryos are destroyed in the process. This may still leave open work by universities and public health research institutes.
Thank you for the link of your daughter...what a voice and distinctly her own. She’ll be singing for Jesus and all of those we love who have gone ahead of us.... One sweet day we’ll all arrive “home”.
May the love of the Lord Jesus reach to Hope’s friend, Melissa, that she will find peace of heart and mind in Him very soon. For and in His great name, Amen.
Well, yes and no. These guys are unlikely to work for free, and will find it hard to get public funds for such work.
This is greater than a hijack a thread issue.
This is the sort of things thread ought to be pulled off track for.
I will certainly remember your daughter’s friend in prayer as well. What an unbearable burden for a young lady of that age to carry with her. I know of people who had friends die with them and the survivor’s guilt is overwhelming.
I am so glad that you have the peace that knowing where she is can bring.
We Love You.
I am soooo sory for your loss. Please allow me to pray for you.
Good to know there is decent people on both sides of the Atlantic.
