Mark Gibbs on E-Cat
October 18, 2011 2:24 P.M.
By Reihan Salam
At Network World, Mark Gibbs has a column on E-Cat, a low-energy nuclear reaction technology developed by the Italian inventor Andrea Rossi. It sounds, and most likely is, too good to be true. Gibbs projects what might unfold if E-Cat works as promised:
Let’s assume Rossi’s E-Cat works. What then?
From the demonstrated prototypes it appears that you could build E-Cats small enough to power a car or a house. Bundle a lot of them together and you could power a truck, a ship or an office block. Imagine a data center where each row of racks has its own really cheap power generator.

Now you have a world where oil only matters as a raw product for things like plastics so the oil economy as we know it could be dismantled within a few months. Production costs for anything would fall. The power grid would become obsolete. Power stations of all kinds would no longer be an environmental problem. The balance of economic power worldwide would change and, for example, OPEC would become a historical footnote.

The only risk, assuming that the E-Cat doesn’t become horribly radioactive after extended operation or produce some other kind of hazardous byproduct, could be global thermal pollution from so many power generators (if they are very cheap and not dangerous then niceties such as minimizing waste heat would be ignored).

We could see a world where ubiquitous power generation is so cheap it wouldn’t be worth metering (as a consequence, Rossi would become the wealthiest man in the world, assuming that all of the vested interests in the existing oil and power economies didn’t have him bumped off). [Emphasis added]
A public demonstration in Bologna is scheduled for the 28th of October.

As a thought experiment, it’s worth thinking through what might happen to the wold if “production costs for anything” were to markedly decrease. Might labor-intensive manufacturing in emerging economies take a hit? And if so, will this contribute to large-scale political unrest? Moreover, resource extraction is not just important to OPEC: Norway, Australia, Canada, and the United States, among many other countries, might see a pronounced internal shift of economic and political power. It’s all very intriguing.
This can’t be serious.

Not only that, no person would touch this device with a sterling reputation like a Stephen Hawking.

Yes, to ensure there isn’t any fraud, you really do have to have a team of different disciplines.

Once examination before the test is done, the unit needs to be reassembled using all outside test equipment from the group.

The only way for outsiders like us to make sure it is legit though, is for this group to be hired by someone else who is interested....like a customer paying for the device.

On Oct 28th, Rossi says the test will now be by customer consultants .... when previously the unit was supposed to be turned over to the customer and for them to test it with zero interference from Rossi.

This story flip and flaps around like one of kevmo’s sea gulls he sees whenever he logs into the internet.

If there is someone who has been fooled this long ..... and is thinking of giving this fool money still because of your stories...they better insist on the device being completely checked prior to running the test.

Otherwise they are a fool.

What has he done that merits prison? Is he selling ‘shares’ in this, advance orders?

Just making fraudulent claims won’t send him to prison. He has to do something like sell shares or promise investors a piece of the profits (which is kind of like selling shares) but I think he would get more money that way but he could also end up like Ben Siegel and end up selling more than 100% of shares, yet another reason to send him to prison if that were to take place.

Taking suckers money isn’t in itself illegal, unethical to be sure. Joseph Newman’s been taking money for years and he’s still free to peddle his snake oil.

If I say I’ve developed a drug that cures all cancers, (do a web search, there’s more than one whack job claiming this), then no harm. If I then open a clinic and sell my cure, it’s off to prison.

That’s why a lot of these cancer scumbags and they are scumbags for selling false hope when they know they’re selling water operate out of Mexico. I know someone who was so desperate, he went down there and got the ‘treatment’ he’s dead, it didn’t give him an extra second of life.

For all I know, Rossi either, a) Believes his device works or b) His device does work or finally c) He believes his device will work, it just needs a little more work. Lots of inventors get so tied up they can’t accept the fact that all the time they’ve invested in their invention would have been put to better use taking a community college physics and chemistry course.

Just do a search on youtube for free energy. Lots of people claiming they have it. If I had it, I’d power my house with it and have experts evaluate it to make sure I’m not scamming. Once I proved it, I’d try to get a patent.

Unfortunately, Or possibly fortunately, the patent office won’t give you a patent for a perpetual motion machine or the new version of that, free energy or overunity. The point being, if I had such a world changing device or cancer cure or whatever, would you put it on youtube or get some serious backing like from a university like MIT or Caltech

The blacklight power guy is having his work evaluated by Rowen university. That doesn’t mean it works but at least he’s on the right path.

While I’m an somewhat an expert on electronics, I’m also a nobody, you wouldn’t want my endorsement, it would be useless, now you get a Stephen Hawking type on your side, then you get credibility and an expert who will say one way or the other whether the device is real.

Unless, and this has happened, the expert is blinded and doesn’t see the scam. Joseph Newman got over 40 ‘experts’ to sign off on his motor. One was Dr. Roger Hastings, he has a PhD and wrote a paper saying that Newman’s device was real. He has since recanted yet Newman still uses his endorsement. What people don’t realize is that in an A/C circuit, the current and voltage aren’t in sync, anyone remember eli the ice man?
This is why power factor is so important. If you apply the relatively simple DC circuit equations, it appears that the device makes more power than it takes. Bust out the vector math and you get the real efficiency and it’s always way below 100%.

This is what’s intriguing about Rossi’s device, he’s obviously not playing the power factor game using inductors or capacitors to skew the results unless he fudging the power draw of the heaters his device uses thereby proving over unity. How is he calculating how much energy he’s putting into this device to pre-heat it as well as the heater that is supposed to make the device more stable. I read he thought without the heating device, he was worried his device would run away from him to its destruction. Since his device supposedly produces heat, adding heat to stabilize it seems counter intuitive but I know nothing about this. It seems he could game the results by applying more heat energy than he says he’s applying but that would be found out pretty fast if he lets people examine it.

Man, am I getting paid by the word or what?????

I've tried to remain unbiased in this discussion even if I"m a smart ass.

This comment is a personal attack and an honorable man would ask the moderators to have it removed: It’s one non-sequitur after another after another with you, they get worse as the night grows. You should consider checking into rehab, having your doctor review your med schedule, or maybe just go to some AA meetings.

You seem to jump to insults pretty quickly, lets see, you've accused him of having mental problems, having your doctor review your med schedule, being an alcoholic or drug addict, or maybe just go to some AA meetings.

How does any of that advance the discussion? Granted, people get a little hot during these discussions, but now, having seen the light of day, you need to request to have them removed.

BTW, what the hell does a seagull have to do with anything. I looked it up under Internet slang and it's not there. Are you trying to create a new Internet term by repeatedly posting it and denigrating other posters with the term? Maybe I'm a little slow but this is the first time I've heard of the term and it's remarkably lame. I get the analogy, and it's still really lame.

I have to read it later, but Rossi is doing is called a confidence scam using shills and come-ons.

A come-on is the refusing to take money so that the mark will beg for the con to take his money. Eventually the con will take the money with many conditions to eliminate pressure for him to produce results and to make the money difficult to trace.

Funny, Paul Newman did that in The Sting when he pretended to refuse to take Robert Shaw's money in the end.

Does Rossi publish a list of investors?

No, he claims it is all his money .... But in some posts references to investors ... He also references selling distribution rights, he appears to be doing anything he can to suck up money.

There’s a nobel prize winner, Josephson, who has stood up to bat for Rossi. Naturally, the naysayers around here immediately begin to throw him under the bus.

*** Anyone who would do what you say without testing the device is a complete fool. On that we can agree. You have some grandiose ideas if you think this is true, that someone would give Rossi money just because of what I have posted on FR.

***I’ve seen this pattern on FR before. It invariably involves the usage of drugs, whether prescribed or self-induced. That is my observation and I am sticking to it. Why should FReepers be subjected to multiple classic fallacies, progressive non-sequiturs, and all the other basic trolling techniques — all over an experimental technology? These seagulls even admit to being entertainment trolls. They admit to trying to stifle discussion.

***One of our own Freepers, B4Ranch says that he tried to back Rossi to the tune of $200k ten years ago but was declined. But dilataunt is convinced that, because he saw the movie “The Sting”, that such cons are easy to pull off and that somehow Rossi is a master con artist. Of course, he ignores what even Rossi’s enemy says about Rossi.

That's great!

OK, maybe not:

UPDATE: Brian Josephson (Noble Prize winning physicist) will NOT test Andrea Rossi's Energy Catalyzer. A misinterpreted posting led to this misunderstanding.

UPDATE: "Someone who couldn't read failed to see that the text talking about 'our test' was written by Levi not me. It is Levi's test." - Brian Josephson

Are there any updates on whether he is going to accept the offer to test the Ecat?

Maybe the MIBs got to him?

I wouldn't pat myself on your back to soon. Had you used your 'vaunted' reading skills, you would have seen that there's a minor discrepancy, no make that major. From Brian Josephson:?

He obviously went to bat for Rossi. He may not be testing the Ecat on this round, but it’s very minor point. You’re making a mountain out of a molehill.

I mentioned Paul Newman (an actor).

I mentioned, "The Sting" ( a movie).

Then I mentioned Robert Shaw (an actor)

Now only a self important gas bag pompous blowhard would think he needs to inform FR's readers that I'm talking about a movie.

Huh, you're link#56 doesn't mention, The Sting" but my post did. Please point to the correct post; if it exists. Is this yet another example of your vaunted reading skills? I searched for Dilataunt but couldn't find him.

I'd like to see the results of a Sphygmomanometer on you now, it's got to be pretty high as your dingy is taking on water.

I don't know the source of the delusion that you have superior reading and writing skills but I'd be willing to bet it comes from you.
