WASHINGTON (AP) It'll cost a penny more to mail a letter next year.
The cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service announced Tuesday that it will increase postage rates on Jan. 22, including a 1-cent increase in the cost of first-class mail, to 45 cents.

Forever stamp sales through the roof.
Actually this shows that one of the problems of the post office is an inability to compete due to the fact that they can’t simply raise rates as needed. They have to get approval well ahead of time.
I wish they would jack up the junk mail rate a lot...
They ought to lower the citizen’s rate, and jack up the junk mailer’s rate...
I would be happy to pay $.50 for a first class outgoing letter.
Me, too.
I buy a book of stamps every year or two. Good luck with that rate increase. ;-)
That will cost me another 12 to 15 cents next year...
I think it is rather more complex than that. They also can’t get approval to modernize, to restructure tasks, to open and close offices where needed, etc. Of course, this is one of the few things the government is supposed to be doing Constitutionally.
I understand their cash crisis is driven by a demand that they account for their existing and future retirees’ pensions in a short period of time.
This doesn’t make sense to me.
.50 would still be far cheaper than most places in the world.
They have union issues which are an obvious problem but the real problems have come from congress like the ridiculous obligation to fund employee retirements something like 30 years into the future.
Pay all bills online. Send all mail correspondence by e-mail.
Frankly I don’t see how they can do it so cheaply. Try walking into FedEx or UPS and ask them to send a letter for 50 cents, and see what kind of a reaction you get.
The post office needs to stop selling these hundreds-of-dollars money orders to Mexicans to ship our country back to their relatives and only charge a damned dollar or whatever. Make them pay out the wazingo (for the Gringos)...
There's no reason whatsoever to buy any other kind.
My “for what it’s worth comment” is, why not raise the rates on all that “junk mail” they stuff in our boxes every weak?
Savings on a number of fronts including not wasting paper.
Delivering the mail is something i want done at least five days a week. 6 days would be better. Like it or not, the post office helps drive our economy. To see it reduced in size would not be beneficial.
