Windmills to shut at night following demise of rare bat
Kathy Mellott - The Tribune-Democrat
October 17, 2011
LILLY Night operation of the windmills in the North Allegheny Windpower Project has been halted following discovery of a dead Indiana bat under one of the turbines, an official with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Monday.
The finding marks only the second location where an Indiana bat has been found dead under a wind turbine. Two Indiana bats were found under turbines in the Mid-west, said Clint Riley, supervisor for Fish and Wildlifes Pennsylvania field office.
While finding the dead bat is not good news for any of us, it does show the monitoring works, Riley said from his State College office.

Probably were found by the same fool that killed them and put them there.

If you believe that you have never been in a coal mine. But then maybe you were in one that had the no bats in cave sign.

One of the vital (but rarely mentioned) benefits of wind energy is the supply of shredded poultry downstream for the victims of the Obama Depression.

The rare Indiana bat is a threatened species.
Meanwhile, in other news, the Moon bat (known for it's enlarged left wing) is occupying public parks around the western world.
Wind turbines shut down at night? Supplement with photovoltaic power!

"Bats radar jammed by cell phone, it is the windmills fault. I had an owl hit my windshield once, do I need to stop driving."
Well, Obama does want mass transit almost anywhere where it doesn't make any sense otherwise. So watch out who you ask; some leftist will think that private cars should be outlawed.

So instead of taking 20 years to pay for themselves, windmills will now take 30 yeras to pay for themselves. Of course that’s providing they don’t require maintenance costs.
To: Truth29
LOL, no doubt.

"And what were Indiana bats doing in Pennsylvania anyway?" I was born in Indiana, PA. So was Jimmy Stewart :-)
According to Wikipedia, This breed of bat also shut down a windfarm in West Virginia in 2009.

So: What kids of birds are they killing during the day?
I don’t see the problem, we don’t need electricity at night anyway. The Amish don’t have it and they get along fine. In fact they breed in the dark while we are watching TV.They have big families as a rsult of no electricity.

OK, what stops the blades from turning at night? Is there some sort of automatic feathering of the prop? Does it lock in place? What kind of stress does that place on the mechanics of the beast?

Evolution and natural selection, mainstays of the progressive imagination, would eventually result in bats which avoided windmills. Let it be. Let’s see who’s right.
To: Libloather
I’m torn. I’m as much for inexpensive, economic energy for all as anyone. But unlike most other animals, bats really are endangered, and they multiply so slowly that it doesn’t take much to devastate a population.
