PHOENIX - After first apologizing for suggesting an electric fence along the border, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain told reporters here Monday that he still thinks it's a good idea for controlling illegal immigration.
"I'm not walking away from that," he said.
Cain has spent the last several days explaining a controversial comment about building an electrified fence along the U.S. - Mexico border that he said could kill people trying to enter the country illegally. On Sunday, he said his comments were "a joke." But talking to reporters here after a meeting here with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who has made a national reputation for cracking down on illegal immigrants, Cain reversed course.
Initially Cain apologied when told his remarks had upset some in the state. "Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa," he said, using the Latin formula for expressing contrition. But when a reporter challenged his description of his comments, saying he didn't seem to be telling a joke, the retired pizza executive acknowledged: "You're right." He said he still believes in the need for a border fence "and it might be electrified."

When did Cain the TALKER say this BS about empowerment zones? That is really bad.
Then ever Texas redneck with a six-pack in them will want to try out 'Hillbilly Handfishing' in the piranha moat.
That said, when a person is not politically correct, he is going to make plenty of mistakes.
FWIW, I would gladly support Cain or Perry if either gets the nomination. Both would make great presidents. Romney would be awful IMO.
Cain needs to maintain momentum and start building on it...and Perry somehow needs to regain it (and that is hard to do once the spotlight has moved on).
assumptions
Gov. Perry asks for drones and technology, and more boots on the U.S. Mexican border. Meanwhile Texas Rangers are patrolling the U.S. Mexican border (1250 miles) the best they can -- salaries paid by the citizens of Texas. The International border with Mexico is a Federal responsibility but they refuse to do their sworn duty. Instead we find out the U.S. Federal Government bought and GAVE guns to Mexican drug cartels.
Jaime Zapata, a U.S. Special (ICE) Agent from Texas who was investigating human trafficking (required to be unarmed in Mexico -- so the U.S. knew he was a sitting target) was murdered in Mexico (information coming out points to many more murders and crimes tied to the transfer of these guns to Mexican criminals). And Gov. Perry is the headline.
Gov. Rick Perry states that fencing in urban areas is effective but drones and Intel is needed for the rest of the border. His written and personal requests for the U.S. government to seal the border is ignored by the Obama administration and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and instead is sent a few extra people to sit behind desks.
Actually, this little episode displayed that he was quick to dissemble when he thought he’d been caught saying something that would hurt him.
I just don’t see a whole lot of difference between Cain’s statement and that of Perry. Cain has never had to walk the walk.
Especially with this GOP field.
Cain is getting a taste of what it feels like to be leading in the polls - definite target and intense scrutiny of every word. Unlike Gov. Perry - who has experience in campaigning - Cain will not be able to outlast the scrutiny. Cracks are already beginning to form.
Today, I saw a clip on TV of an op-ed Cain did a year ago where he opined that a national sales tax was a bad idea.
Wow... You got caught being a hypocrite (criticizing Perry for supporting one scum RINO), when your guy Cain supported an even more scummy RINO... And you bother JR cause you can’t stand by your earlier critique? It’s just easier to play snitch and have someone zotted just cause they disagree with you?
Like he can’t see your previous post and see the trail?
Again, wow.
He has details one day, takes it back the next, goes back to original on day three.
Detail; it was a joke; I meant it the first time.~Cain
Ronald Reagan was 51 years old before he became a Republican.
Rick Perry only waited until he was 40 to make the change.
Lots of people head down a path for a while before they realize it isn’t going where they want to be.
Thanks for the post...I figured Cain was with us ALL THE WAY as far as closing the border.
When I point out your irrational behavior as a perrywinkle, your response to me is "talk to the Federal government?"
Wifey, stop posting, it's destroying your balance and perspective, go wash the dishes, make the bed and scrub the floors.
I'm trying to save you from yourself, you are becoming bitter and forlorn, and when perry gets out of the race, you'll be headed over to DU for solace and comfort.
I love Herman, but it is flip flopping like this that make him look like an amateur.
