PHOENIX - After first apologizing for suggesting an electric fence along the border, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain told reporters here Monday that he still thinks it's a good idea for controlling illegal immigration.
"I'm not walking away from that," he said.
Cain has spent the last several days explaining a controversial comment about building an electrified fence along the U.S. - Mexico border that he said could kill people trying to enter the country illegally. On Sunday, he said his comments were "a joke." But talking to reporters here after a meeting here with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who has made a national reputation for cracking down on illegal immigrants, Cain reversed course.
Initially Cain apologied when told his remarks had upset some in the state. "Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa," he said, using the Latin formula for expressing contrition. But when a reporter challenged his description of his comments, saying he didn't seem to be telling a joke, the retired pizza executive acknowledged: "You're right." He said he still believes in the need for a border fence "and it might be electrified."

That’s all you got, Rooster.
Well, he’s got a lot of admittin’ to do.
Great, that you have come on board to point out that mr Cain wants to secure the boarder. Where as mr perry wants to hug an illegal.
Defensive? You saw my nice side, lady. And this is the dumbest comment you could have made. You don't know me, you don't know what I've done. And you're plumb wrong to boot. I've driven from San Diego to Las Cruses, I've driven from El Paso to McAllen. I've been across the border in Texas and Arizona. And those drives have include good sized portions off the Interstates and near the border.
You seem to make presumptions about people. You may want to sit back and rethink that because shows how wrong-headed you are...about a lot of things.
Now, get lost. You offend me.
I don’t think Cain knows much about the border or has a serious plan.
He’s just pandering to the crowd.
:)
Go start your own thread and then tell me to get lost bcsco.
Of course he does.
Romney had a 150-page plan. It may be ugly, it may not be good, but it sure is detailed.
Perry has issued the first part of his plan, and it’s pretty detailed for it’s section.
Cain’s “plan” is 8 bullets in a 2-page campaign flyer posted to his web site.
One of the bullets is that he will implement 9-9-9 by having the supercommittee “pass” the legislation. Well, the supercommittee can’t “pass” anything, they are just 12 people. They DO make a recommendation, and that recommendation has to be voted up or down without amendment or committee debate. But in order for his 9-9-9 plan to be considered by the SC, he would have to actually WRITE a legislative proposal and submit it — unless he’s going to be like Obama and expect them to write his plan for him.
And he has to do it quick, because they finish their job around Thanksgiving.
And he has to hope they don’t mind taking on a totally unauthorized job in addition to the task that are required to do by law. Cain thinks they have spare time, and has no problem with them messing around with stuff that has nothing to do with their job — which was a big conservative complaint when the debt bill was passed, that the SC would meddle in other things. And that because of the onerous military cuts, republicans would have to vote for whatever they proposed.
And here is Cain, trying to squeeze his 9-9-9 program through that shortcut legislative process, so Obama can sign it. And if the democrats make it a 10-10-10, Cain can’t veto it, because Obama is President.
But Cain has shown no indication he plans to submit anything to them. Maybe he’s remembering his days as a CEO, where he would write a memo and his staff would run off and create a detailed plan and implement it and report back to him. Government certainly doesn’t work that way.
You are so right.
Cain can’t seem to handle the lead.
I do see the danger (for him) of crashing and burning.
We need to stay a little united against the horrible Obama.
By the way, personal complaint. Our Texas Rangers are in the World Series again. I doubt seriously if Michelle Obama has ever seen a baseball game in her life. And yet she decides to show up at the World Series. Now, I’m gonna have to see the cameras panning over at her every two minutes.
Shouldn’t there be some sort of law against that?
Thanks for the excellent post about Perry’s plans for border and illegals.
It will be totally ignored by the Cain people, but I enjoyed it.
We can dream.. Palin would be the only one that can unify most conservatives, but I’d be shocked if she’d ever reconsider her decision
I am not sure if you posted this because of you love of Perry, love of illegals or hatred of Cain.
You won’t have to shoot yourself. You’ll have your choice of electrocution or alligator death. LOL
Herman Cain has re-written, “A week is a lifetime in politics” to “A day is a lifetime in politics.” He’s pretty much shortened it to, “An hour is a lifetime in politics.”
Exactly
LOL
