WASHINGTON - Among the Republicans angling to move into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. a year from January, Mitt Romney is the closest to achieving his goal.
The former Massachusetts governor has reached the decisive phase in his presidential campaign: attempting to consolidate his support and cinch the nomination.
(snip)
Romneys most ardent conservative critics have been left to rally around Herman Cain, simultaneously engaged in a book tour and presidential campaign, in a last-ditch effort to prevent his nomination.

...the Romney staff is focused on what it sees as an inevitable clash with Obama and the Democrats.
But with the primary field finally set and Perry, the closest challenger, struggling in debates and racing to develop policies Romney devised during his 2008 campaign or announced months ago, the Romney staff is focused on what it sees as an inevitable clash with Obama and the Democrats.
"Osama bin Laden was having a great day until the helicopters started hovering over his compound," one top Romney adviser recently told the Globe. "We know the helicopters are coming for us at some point, but everything in this campaign has been geared toward that confrontation."

Romney solidifies front-runner status is not true. The latest polls show Cain as the front runner.
BINGO...the press has annointed Romney to be the guy Obama can beat....and that is that....
In 1988 writers at the Boston Glob were certain that Michael Dukakis had a shot at the White House. They were also certain that Massachusetts was going through some kind of economic miracle that I wasn’t seeing.
Not true is right.
Romney is the one that the Democrats want as they know that their long-term goals will not be jeopardized even if he wins.
LOL, we have not even had one primary yet and the msm is already giving romney the nod. They don’t get it, the majority of pubs do NOT want romney, and they really really really mean it.
So the Boston Globe's Glen Johnson calls him the "FRONT RUNNER".
Wonder how much each prostitute-"journalist"-flack
at the Boston Globe receives to service what goes for
"news" from the Boston Globe these days?
OK, its over, Romney will be the one. Well he’s the one they will back to win the nomination. In the mean time watch how they will try to demean Cain and do to him what they did to Palin. The one they smear the most is always the one they fear the most and all those “Jay-walking” Obama voters will believe anything they hear from the MSM and the entertainment industry.
> The latest polls show Cain as the front runner.
Cain is DOA unless he modifies his tax plan.
Almost everybody I know, including me, will be hurt by it.
I have 9 kids, a mortgage, and very high NH property taxes. I lose the child credit, the mortgage deduction, the property tax deduction, and I get a national 9% sales tax on everything besides.
It’s a lose-lose-lose-lose situation for me.
I haven’t found anybody in local TEA circles that thinks 999 is a good idea. Most of the TEA people I know, are dead set against it and will vote accordingly.
Which world is the Boston Globe living in? That is what happens when you have too much of the medical marijuana.
Boston Globe lies. Romney is not a frontrunner other then in their dreams. Other then liberals, his church, media, Cronies and paid schillings - who is FOR him? I don’t know anybody. Nor does anybody I have discussed it with. Ask around. Polls lie....
I agree with you. Romney has absolutely minimal support among grass roots voters. It’s all hype.
Yep. I'm getting McLame deja vu.
I told my stepmother this when she said she was uncertain about Cain: Unless something changes dramatically, your choices will be Romney or Cain. Do you want Romney as the Republican nominee? The answer was an emphatic no.
Romney would have to move to the right in order to become a RINO.
What income tax bracket are you currently in?
FUMR!!
When we bury Romney's political aspirations, I look forward to the inevitable declarations of "UNEXPECTED" by the lame stream media.
Who says Romney is the frontrunner? His numbers never change, which means he has maxed out his support.
Gregory: Why you and not Mitt Romney?
Cain: Why me and not Mitt Romney? Mitt Romney is a great businessman. I have a lot of respect for him. He has been more of a Wall Street executive. I have been more of a Main Street executive.
I hate to think about it but once we have a GOP nominee, it is going to be one Obama campaign spot after another on radio and TV; newspapers and magazines! I think I’ll just snuggle down with a good book. If you’d like a list of books to read BEFORE we have a nominee, just FReepmail me.
