Those bracing dips in the local lake or river may not be as healthy as they were cracked up to be judging by a new list of polluted waterways released last week by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Recent tests have found more toxic material, bacteria and pollution in California rivers, streams, bays and lakes than has ever been documented before, according to the federal agency. The study shows a 170 percent increase in the number of waterways showing toxicity in 2010 compared with 2006, the last time the study was done. Less than half of the state's lakes, bays and estuaries are meeting water quality standards. "Unfortunately, the grade is not getting better. It's getting worse. At the moment it is a failing grade," said Jared Blumenfeld, the administrator for the EPA's Pacific Southwest region. ..
...
The list was compiled using 22,000 data submissions from counties, cities and the various regional water quality control boards. That's substantially more information than was available in 2006, Blumenfeld said. The sheer amount of data is probably one reason for the increase, ..
The study showed that EPA water quality standards are not being met on 1.6 million acres of California's 3 million acres of lakes, bays, wetlands and estuaries. Federally mandated cleanup plans have not been submitted for 1.4 million acres, according to the report.
The EPA study also showed that 30,000 of the state's 215,000 miles of shoreline, streams and rivers do not meet the water quality goals. Cleanup plans still need to be prepared for 20,000 of those miles, according to the report.
Pesticides and bacteria were the most common pollutants found in the waterways followed by metals and too many nutrients, mostly from runoff.

Still wanna cut our funding?
Yes, for the spending problem is at least 100,000 gazillion times worse than this problem!
Start with dimocrats.
They have to be right. The economy was just booming in California throughout the 2000s and businesses were expanding here like crazy. Everywhere you turn, there is new construction and new factories are popping up everywhere. Agriculture has expanded due to relaxed regulations; water is plentiful for Central Valley farms and they are all green and lush with crops.
Quite the opposite, naturally. People and companies are fleeing the state, industries are leaving, and the feds shut down much of our agriculture to save fish. What a BS article -- it's just another excuse to clamp down with even more outrageous regulatory strangleholds on our lives.
Since you brought it up. One of our local radio stations is going to be interviewing a lady by the name of Rosa Corey (sp?) and they will be discussing Agenda 21 from 2:00 to 3:00 Pacific Time.
You can watch it here at this link MySYtv.com or watch it afterwards. I'm pretty sure it will be archived.
If it's not on the front page, click on the facebook link and type and look for the EdTalk link.
I'm sure it will be on the front page as it's airing live.
Don’t worry, Ricardo Perry is going to suspend the Clean Air and Endangered Species Acts and dismantle the Environmental Protection Agency. No hey problemo.
(That’s sarcasm, I say, sarcasm, son!)

They can cut costs by making them unisex bathrooms....
“ummm they are not using cloth diapers, they are disposables. Instead of changing the baby and throwing them into the many available trash cans, they take the baby to the lake, strip it, wash its butt in the water and leave the diapers floating in the lake.”
Yep, I’ve seen this also at a lake I frequent. Also tons of garbage the amount of which you simply wouldn’t believe. Really terrific to see after the park closes. These animals destroy everything they touch.
Uhhh, you don’t think that maybe 4 million illegal aliens with Third World health habits had anything to do with this?
Somewhere along the way, the comunists of the 20th century figured that fascism was a better route to socialism via property rights. IOW, instead of the govmint owning all the land, the govmint needs only to control all land. And, onerous environmental regulation was the path of least resistance to this end.
They still have water in California?
I have sen this in spades here on rivers in south Texas. I don’t begrudge illegals a day off and time to barbecue and swim on one of the rivers but I have seen baby diapers just thrown in the river, huge amounts of food waste left behind, and ad hoc toilets built out of steel drums that were just left there. When I and a friend arrived there were rats everywhere.
And in mexico as well, on a beautiful beach, I’ve seen mothers just throwing used baby diapers into the surf. It was incredible.
So, the EPA said it and we’re supposed to believe it?
The EPA...with employees who got kicked out of the physics major, the chemistry major, engineering majors, and finally decided to get a “EPA Language major”?
The same employees who couldn’t get hired by a filling station to clean up spilled gasoline?
Oh, thought so.
Has CO2 been detected since it is a pollutant now per the EPA?
It seems the Left Wing mindset attracts a lot of people who have problems with clear, critical thinking. It also attracts a lot of people who simply bats**t crazy. Some times it's hard to tell the difference Of course this is just an observation of the people on the street who let politicians use these ridiculous justifications get away with these sorts of power grabs which are destroying our freedoms on a piece by piece basis and slowly asserting de facto dictatorial control over even the smallest details of our daily lives.
Behold the new CA economic base. With traditional businesses fleeing the state, this is the new industry - green, hip, fuelled by federal dollars. Think of it as DC West...
Ewwwwwwww.
Selfish, and short-term oriented. That lake won't be good for long.
They shut the lake down at least once every summer specifically for this reason. We have high temps here, sometimes 114 and above. Sewage breeds bacteria fast in that kind of environment.
