EPA: California waters show widespread pollution ("problem worse than we thought it was.")

Those bracing dips in the local lake or river may not be as healthy as they were cracked up to be judging by a new list of polluted waterways released last week by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Recent tests have found more toxic material, bacteria and pollution in California rivers, streams, bays and lakes than has ever been documented before, according to the federal agency. The study shows a 170 percent increase in the number of waterways showing toxicity in 2010 compared with 2006, the last time the study was done. Less than half of the state's lakes, bays and estuaries are meeting water quality standards. "Unfortunately, the grade is not getting better. It's getting worse. At the moment it is a failing grade," said Jared Blumenfeld, the administrator for the EPA's Pacific Southwest region. ..

...

The list was compiled using 22,000 data submissions from counties, cities and the various regional water quality control boards. That's substantially more information than was available in 2006, Blumenfeld said. The sheer amount of data is probably one reason for the increase, ..

The study showed that EPA water quality standards are not being met on 1.6 million acres of California's 3 million acres of lakes, bays, wetlands and estuaries. Federally mandated cleanup plans have not been submitted for 1.4 million acres, according to the report.

The EPA study also showed that 30,000 of the state's 215,000 miles of shoreline, streams and rivers do not meet the water quality goals. Cleanup plans still need to be prepared for 20,000 of those miles, according to the report.

Pesticides and bacteria were the most common pollutants found in the waterways followed by metals and too many nutrients, mostly from runoff.

How conveeeeeeeenient.

What's it going to take to bring all this water up to EPA's lofty standards? Oh. I know. How about money?

Yo, EPA, how much money do you suppose it will take to get all that nasty salt out of the ocean?

And how come you don't list fish urine and feces as one of the pollutants common in today's rivers and streams?

How much will it cost to construct billions of little fish bathrooms?

Idiots.

Well what do you expect when you turn a beautiful state into a third world cesspool.

That's just the thing. The rivers and streams and lakes here in California are nowhere near as bad as The EPA wants people to believe.

Of course there's bacteria in lakes and rivers. That's where fish shit and pee.

Of course there are metals in rivers and streams. Some people refer to it as gold.

And nutrients? Nutrients are now a pollutant?

This is one seriesly hugh scam to get people to voluntarily separate themselves from their hard-earned (or soft-earned for millions of Californians) money.

Well, I guess that's better than the alternative.

We can separate ourselves from our money voluntarily or they will think of ways to make us separate ourselves from our money.

And that is something they never blame. We have a man made lake here that was built to be used by swimmers and jetskis. Don’t know how many times it has been shut down because of human waste in it. Illegals have taken it over and change their baby diapers in it.
They turn everywhere they go into a third world hellhole.

Oh the EPA has a great chance to turn California into the utopian Fascist state they so dream of. Which BTW really po’s me. I grew up in California and loved every minute. Would not live there today.
I found my home in 85.

I was really being sarcastic about the issue. This is nothing more than a political power play that Jerry Brown will welcome.

That's what you do when you don't want the hassle of hauling them dirty to where you an wash them. It's the easily available modern substitute for banging the laundry rocks by the side of the river.

UN Agenda 21 is the solution.

We need to reduce the population of the earth to a "sustainable" 500-million immediately.

I suggest we start with all United Nations officials and employees, and all elected government officials and government employees.

It's the fair thing to do, since it's their idea.

Of course, and I bet it is global warming that caused the polution. We must increase our enviro regs 10 fold immediately or all die from polluted water./Sar

The EPA evidently senses they are on their last legs if a Conservative President and congress are elected and are trying to get all the new rule changes in while they can.

One more big scare in order to keep the people in line.

The politicians and bureaucrats are doing the same thing with “pollution” that they do with autism - - lowering the standards for what constitutes it so they can keep crying for more money to “solve” the “growing problem”.

ummm they are not using cloth diapers, they are disposables. Instead of changing the baby and throwing them into the many available trash cans, they take the baby to the lake, strip it, wash its butt in the water and leave the diapers floating in the lake.
