Cain Says His Deadly Fence Plan Was 'a Joke'
The New York Times ^ | Sunday, October 16, 2011 | Susan Saulny

Posted on 10/16/2011 9:18:08 AM PDT by kristinn

At two campaign rallies in Tennessee on Saturday night, the Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said that part of his immigration policy would be to build an electrified fence on the country’s border with Mexico that could kill people trying to enter the country illegally.

But by Sunday morning, in a dramatic change of tone, Mr. Cain, a former restaurant executive, said he was only kidding.

“That’s a joke,” Mr. Cain told the journalist David Gregory during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” where he was asked about the electrified fence. “That’s not a serious plan. I’ve also said America needs to get a sense of humor.”

Mr. Cain’s attempt to pass off incendiary comments as nothing but a joke may take more effort, however. In making the initial remarks about an electrified fence killing illegal immigrants, Mr. Cain was detailed and repetitive. He did not introduce his thoughts as anything but serious commentary, beginning with the words, “We have a crisis of illegal immigration.”

And the crowds responded with cheers, not laughs.

And no, I didn’t want to see anyone killed, and doubt more than a handful of people would be killed by that kind of fence (the ones that test the system)....Given the above, I’d say the status-quo people are MUCH MORE bloodthirsty than the pro-fence people.

Maybe you didn't "want" to see anyone killed, but you sure sounded pretty bloodthirsty yourself.

This is what you posted on the thread last night:

I agree, that would be ‘heartless’. Anyway, anyone dumb enough to expose their kid to that fence deserves to have them popped off.

I said it last night, and I'll say it again - that is a dispicable and vile thing to say - that whole thread really opened my eyes to what a large contingent of Cain supporters are really like. Bunch of flakes!

"so far, it’s only been things that turned out to bite him"

Of course we all agree that you are the spokesman for the ones that decide what comments turn out to bite Herman Cain.

Obviously Cain will protect the borders, Perry will support the massive flow of illegals by providing free education.

Perry was not offended enough by an insensitive word on a rock when he saw it to have it removed, yet his supporters are so sensitive they decided to attack Cain for pointing it out.

The debates point out that Perry is as dumb as the rock he left in place because he was not smart enough to have it removed.

Perry supporters drive home that fact every time they post trying to cover his dumb a$$.

No more jokes, Herman. Romney is now tied with you by Rasmussen. Things are so out of sequence in America that we can’t tell a sensible plan for a joke any more.

I am sure there is other video, but in this one he says if they make it past the electrified barbed wire, and out swim the alligators in the moat that he will give them a job at Godfathers. A lot of our friends south of the boarder who were looking forward to this new challenge and job offer. Now this is supposed to be just a joke? Heartless! Watch the video and see if you think it was a joke. I thought people were laughing because Mr. Cain making them feel uncomfortable. [sarc]

I guess we cannot expect anything rational or factual from a poster dumb enough to be supporting a candidate who calls 3/4’s of his voting base “heartless”.

Whining!

Nor can we expect anything rational or factual from a poster dumb enough to pimp for Romney elitists Bill Kristol and the NYT.

You constantly lie about Perry. You’re no better, and maybe a little worse (because you should know better) than the MSM and the liberals.

I’m amazed by how you strung together multiple clever turns of phrase, without actually imparting any information whatsoever. Very impressive talent you have there!

Thank you for posting this Kristinn.

The Perry people were rabid over this issue ignoring, apparently, the fact that Mr. Cain had addressed this issue during one of the debates.

It's funny when Obama jokes about alligators but not funny when Cain jokes about electric fencing. Yet more hypocrisy from the left.

Do those things and illegal aliens will rapidly deport themselves at their own expense. Motivating them to leave will be much more effective than force and direct confrontation. A lot less expensive too.

Marie pegged it as a joke

To: Marie; org.whodat

Marie - It is a tongue-in-cheek statement, hyperbole, that emphasizes that he believes in strong border security. When he says it in a speech, it kills.

Marie - He serious position on border security is that it is the federal responsibility and that the border must be physically secured with many different means to meet the challenges of various terrains.

Marie, you might have just figured it out. By making statements like this, he is almost assured of being asked about it during the next debate! It makes sure that he gets some air time! Then he can present his real views! :)

Secure the border with more boots on the ground
I do believe we can secure the border with a combination of boots on the ground, technology, and a fence, but we’ve got three other problems. And to get to it, we’ve got to secure the border.

Secondly, let’s promote the path to citizenship that’s already there. We don’t need a new one, we just need to clean up the bureaucracy that’s slowing the process down and discouraging people.

The third thing we need to do, enforce the laws that are there, and the way we do it, empower the states. I believe that the people closest to the problem are the best ones to be able to solve that problem. Empower the states to do what the federal government hasn’t done, can’t do, and won’t do. This is how we solve the entire problem.

We have a path to citizenship: it’s called legal immigration
Q: When Pres. Obama joked about protecting the borders with alligators and a moat, not only did you embrace the idea, you upped the ante with “a 20-foot barbed wire electrified fence.” Were you serious?

A: America has got to learn how to take a joke. But allow me to give you my real solution to the immigration problem. I happen to believe that is four problems.

Yes, we must secure the border with whatever means necessary.
Enforce the laws that are there.
Promote the path to citizenship that’s already there. We have a path to citizenship for illegal aliens. It’s called legal immigration.
And then, I happen to agree with empowering the states and allow them to deal with that issue. If we work on the right problem, we will be able to solve it.

And in the case of immigration, we’ve got four problems that we need to work on simultaneously. We can have high fences and wide open doors, all at the same time.

Not right to sue Arizona for trying to protect themselves
I want to share with you my three guiding principles so you know what type of leader I will be. Three of my guiding principles that have guided my life; guided the decisions I made when I was running companies; and guided my family.

Guiding principle #1: Do the right thing. It was not right to sue the state of Arizona when they were simply trying to protect themselves. You will always be able to count on Herman Cain to do what is right.
Guiding principle #2: We have got to lead this nation from an entitlement society to an empowerment society, by getting government out of the way. We’ve got to empower states to do what states do best: to solve the people’s problems at the state level. Empowerment, not entitlement
Guiding principle #3: It’s not about us. We have to defend the life of the unborn. We must defend those principles that this nation was founded upon.

Secure our borders; enforce our laws
Americans have embraced their role as the world’s premier “melting pot,” welcoming immigrants from every corner of the planet. We readily learn about other cultures, customs and beliefs. We appreciate those who are willing to come to this country and mak America a more vibrant and enriched place.

Americans do resent, however, the willingness of some to circumvent our laws and enter our nation illegally. While many, if not most, illegal immigrants are peaceful people simply seeking to provide for their families, some are not. In fact, some are quite dangerous, jeopardizing the safety and well-being of American citizens.

Illegal immigration also puts a tremendous strain on America’s entitlement and health care systems. In fact, several hospitals in the U.S. have declared bankruptcy as a result of the costs of caring for illegal immigrants.

We must secure our borders, enforce our laws and promote the existing path to citizenship.ÿ

Where’s the fence? Not in the Immigration Bill!
The Comprehensive Immigration Bill debated in the Senate last week was dead on arrival. Most regular folks kept screaming, “Where’s the fence?”

The Immigration Bill was supposed to be good compromise legislation. It is just bad legislation with different agendas glued together, while not emphasizing enough of the public’s number one priority - the fence! Not just wire, wood and concrete, but all the technologies we have available to stop the rampant inflow of illegal aliens into this country.

By many Cain supporters rationale, Perry makes an off-the-cuff insensitive remark - and HE IS BRANDED FOR LIFE FOR THAT COMMENT - it is the core of their dislike for him.

But Cain makes off-the-cuff remarks that he later says “were jokes” - and that’s just hunky-dory. At least, Perry has a record of governance performance that he can be judged by. Cain has no such record in the public sector - so we don’t know if every comment he says is for real or if he will take them back a day later when he starts getting heat for it. He just throws red meat out there to get his base all drooled up.

THis is good.
What can the lefty media say then?
The list is endless of stupid idiotic things Ibama has said and got a pass on as well.
He could even say “all 57 states” without even referencing Ibama. Just to see if he gets a reaction.

Do prison’s use electric fences? I don’t know, but if they do then I’d think it would be legal to build an electric fence on the border. But if they don’t it’s probably because it’s either ineffective or illegal.

I know they had to stop using ground based radar because it made the illegals sterile when they were zapped by the radar for too long. Of course to me that’s win-win, but human rights courts see it differently.
