Behind Enemy Lines: Perry Campaign Keeping the Faith in New Hampshire
Townhall ^ | 15th October 2011 | Guy Benson

MANCHESTER, NH – Rick Perry’s Granite State headquarters has the feel of a typical campaign office: Red, white, and blue “Perry – President” placards line the walls, young staffers tap away incessantly on keyboards and Blackberries, and dry erase boards are crowded with maps of the state, important dates, and key endorsements. The Texas Governor may have just sustained a series of extraordinary blows in national polling, but you wouldn’t know it from the demeanor of his staffers. The fight goes on, even in rival Mitt Romney’s regional backyard.

Unsurprisingly, several staffers I spoke with are upbeat about Perry’s latest debate performance at Dartmouth College. The word “solid” comes up more than once. “It’s what we needed,” one aide says, expressing relief that Perry “wasn’t a pinanta this time,” unlike in previous debates. They’re also quick to point out that debates are only one small element of a candidate’s overall appeal. Their man, they say, is much more dynamic in person and on the stump, which is why the campaign plans to get Perry in front of as many voters as possible before the first votes are cast in Iowa and New Hampshire. “We’ve adopted a marathon strategy,” one staffer explains. They certainly have the resources to take the long view; Perry raked in over $17 million in under 50 days last quarter.

No matter what, Freepers should be cheering Huntsman in New Hampshire at Romney's expense. Huntsman is placing all his bets there, hoping to build a snowball's chance.

But I want to say somethin about Sarah Palin. None ofus would even be half the way towards making an informed and issue driven dicision if it hadn’t been for the HELL sarah has gone through...FOR America. I truely believe she was a woman for our time. She has more than proven her faith in God and America. I only wish she and her Family the best and may they get a little peace for the next few months.

I'm with you on that, but I would add that I hope Sarah will be able to be a part of Perry's energy administration. When Perry says we are standing on top of our future, it sure would be nice to see Sarah standing on top of that future too. But regardless of what Sarah Palin has for her future... blessings to her and her family. She has already done a lot for us, and you're right... we will be a better country for remembering all she has done and has helped us do already.

Tonight, deep in the Heart of Texas, I made my first contribution to Mitt.

He should and will be our next POTUS. Luv the Herb. Rick’s a loser in the end. It’s Mitt and I’m all-in.

It came from a Republican womens group in NH after Perry’s debate.

Thanks for the response.

I had not seen that anywhere and was glad to see that.

Both my husband and I thought Perry had done well at that last debate. He wasn’t breathing fire out his nostrils, but then again, he acted just like the forum developers had set the debate up to be, a debate around a kitchen table theme.

It’s very nice to see that group polled Perry so high in that last debate performance in New Hampshire.

Maybe I should have said it was nice to see that poll showed Perry as the WINNER of the New Hampshire debate! :)

If Cain had ever bothered to visit the hundreds of miles of rugged “wasteland” yet mostly privately owned border between Texas and Mexico...not even speaking of the rest...I don’t see how he could’ve ever thought an “electified border fence” was reasonable.

You first have to start with “border” and “fence” in defining terms and debating the detail required, before you ever get to “electrified”. Cost? Time? Land rights? Placement of fence? Water access? Mexico’s rights, and yes they do have them. It is a border between TWO countries.

When I saw the other thread headline, Cain for electrified fence, I just about lost it.

The GOP can’t win without the hispanic vote...known fact. Cain just lost the hispanic vote. Whether he meant this or not...he actually kissed the hispanic vote goodbye.

Cain TALKS, that’s something he’s good at. A talk show host on the radio, and a gift for the clever turn of phrase.

Yes he’s a businessman. But while he talked, Perry had to govern.

The feds ARE to blame. We need to “nail their sorry hides to the wall”, realizing no state no matter how sincere and determined, can do this. Courts stripped out portions of AL’s law, as they did AZ’s.

I support Perry in pinning this on the feds. That is exactly, precisely where it is, there is no getting around it though some have tried, uselessly.

Cain can rocket to the top by talking. Sometimes his talk doesn’t fit reality and then he has to backtrack. This has happened repeatedly.

I don’t see how you can believe that Perry is a Christian but at the same time fear he’s pro Islam. He’s been nice to some Muslims that he knows, whom he apparently thinks are sane and patriotic Americans. Think he doesn’t want to lump all Muslims in the boat so many of them do belong in. It’s no more than that, with Perry.

Perry is one of the most staunch supporters of Israel on the face of this earth. But in your mind, a Christian and pro-Israel candidate is going to cave in to Muslims. I guess you must mean well, but you gotta understand that “that dog just won’t hunt”.

In terms of agreeing with his wife, she was the one who caused the problem, and he was not going to diss his wife, because that’s the kind of guy he is. It cost him, he probably thought to himself something different, but he was not going to publicly put her down, no matter what it cost him.

Try to remember, he did not say those words, she said them, and he was put in an untenable position. Hopefully, going forward, she will understand not to do that again.

Cain would’ve been on shaky ground anyway, re Hispanics voting for him. Several reasons I won’t go into, that’s a whole, distinct issue.

But of course, it got worse with the electrified fence statement. But then, non Hispanics with common sense should not be cheering Cain on, although many will. In Texas, if you understand this particular border, you wouldn’t cheer him on no matter what ethnicity you are, because IT MAKES NO SENSE.

The Hispanics I know and talk to about this are AGAINST illegals, not for them. They are of my generation and agree with me. I get so tired of people on this forum who see an Hispanic and start thinking and screaming, “illegal”, or “illegal supporter”.

I have talked to legal hispanics this is what they’ve told me. However, I just heard Cain on the electric fence and he said that was a joke. He didn’t mean it.
