Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Saturday that part of his immigration policy would be to build an electrified fence on the country’s border with Mexico that could kill people trying to enter the country illegally...
Mr. Cain added that he also would consider using military troops “with real guns and real bullets” on the border to stop illegal immigration.
The remarks were among the most pointed yet by Mr. Cain about illegal immigration, and they come as he is enjoying a surge in national political polls on the back of his victory in a recent Florida straw poll..
It is not the first time that Mr. Cain has floated the idea of an electrified fence. He has told the story many times of a caller to his former radio show who chastised him for talking about building a border fence, saying that such an idea was impractical.
“It’s going to be 20 feet high. It’s going to have barbed wire on the top. It’s going to be electrified. And there’s going to be a sign on the other side saying, ‘It will kill you — Warning.’” At an earlier rally, on the campus of Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tenn., he added that the sign would be written “in English and in Spanish.”
“This nation has always been a nation with wide open doors,” Mr. Cain said at the second rally. “We want to make it easy for people to come through the front door. And we’re going to shut off the back door so you don’t have to sneak into America.”

Perry seemed to take a realistic view of boarder security in his first primary debate. It didn’t sell very well.
He should have mentioned electric fences and machine guns. That’s what passes for “realistic” these days.
All I can say is Perry promoted and passed the law.
A fence only works around the white house because they have armed guards that will shoot your A** if you climb over it. It is a much smaller area to monitor than the border. A fence alone won’t keep a determined person out because there are always ways to defeat those fences. There has to be some kind of surveillance, and violators must be meet with human intervention. That is the only thing that will work in the end. Short of a mine field.

Also I must note that nobody has been more acutely aware of legal challenges than Rick Perry and Greg Abbott.
They are suing the EPA at this moment

Well, actually it is working, just not as good as it should or would if the Feds would do their duty and send the resources necessary.
The number of illegals detained at the border form 2007-2009 (300,000 range) is almost half of what it was from 2005-2007. And is MUCH lower than it was from 2000-2005.
The numbers from 2009-2011 aren't out yet but I'd expect them to be even less due to the economy in the US.
Heavily fine those that hire the illegals and don't give them benefits and they will self deport.

There are actually a lot of things wrong with me.
Perhaps Arizona and Alabama are familiar to you. When the feds don’t do their jobs, these states utilized states rights to take their own action. Funny, I would have thought Texas would have lead the way and not be an enabler of illegals crossing.

Looking for info on the fence, and came across the stories about Mexican military incursions here in Texas, aiding the drug runners. That reminded me of the stories we heard in our town last month from the Texas Border Volunteers.

Fences don’t do much against heavily armoured vehicles and military style “incursions.”
We need an “all of the above,” but strategically designed plan to secure the border. The problem is that we’ve got good conservatives playing politics and appealing to crowds who don’t discern between Arizona’s desert and Texas’ Rio Grande - and who have never even considered the unwatched coasts.
