KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Kansas City's Catholic bishop has become the highest-ranking U.S. Catholic official indicted on a charge of failing to protect children after he and his diocese waited five months to tell police about hundreds of images of child pornography discovered on a priest's computer, officials said Friday.
Bishop Robert Finn, the first U.S. bishop criminally charged with sheltering an abusive clergyman, and the Kansas City-St. Joseph Catholic Diocese have pleaded not guilty on one count each of failing to report suspected child abuse.
Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said Finn and the diocese were required under state law to report the discovery to police because the images gave them reason to believe a child had been abused.

With Protestants, there’s no firm hierarchy so things really can’t play out the same way.
You must have been the kind of kid who, when caught with your hand in the cookie jar, pointed to your friend and said,”But...but...Mary Jane is doing it, too.”
Catholics refer to Protestant ecclesial bodies as “churches.” Couldn’t you extend the same courtesy to the Catholic sect?

You guys know what this is really about, I’m sure.
The Catholic sect as a worldwide institution has sheltered child abusers almost systematically- not by edict but in practice. One would have thought the demons were all smoked out but we see it is still going on.
Must you snitch on child abusers? Must you snitch on possessors of child porn (against the law) who my not have actually abused children?
Make your own choice...
God’s punishment for abusing the little, innocent ones will be much worse than anything an earthly court can hand out.
But, you know that.
I could break either way on this particular case, but hear me out here...... I just feel somewhat uncomfortable with the compulsion-to-report concept. If this was to be broadened to all crimes, you could conceivably see passengers in cars being hit with stiff fines for not reporting to cops, via cell phone, of every traffic violation the driver engaged in. See what craziness could ensue? Every absurd law-set always begins with something somewhat defensible, such as this and the compulsion-to-report child porn. Always starts reasonable, but ends up as a revenue generator as every passenger is cited and fined for a failure to report a speeding violation.
Much like contraband substances used to be *impounded* and ~ oops! ~ just disappeared after that.
Without knowing anymore about this story, I'll bet my last dollar that this involves the Jesuit Order of Priests, the most common order in America. It is fairly well known that a young man can not survive seminary school unless he is a homosexual. This is the American (Kennedy/Pelosi) Catholic Church and it can go straight to. . . well you know! Before you break out the flame-throwers know that I'm a Catholic; one hell of a disenchanted Catholic.
We are all criminals now. It is only a matter of the degree of the perceived heinousness of the thought crime that matters.
There is only one Church.
There are many churches, sects, denominations, bodies, prayer groups ,etc.
What do you belong to?
Sorry to offend.
Stoking much of the anger is the fact that only three years ago, Bishop Finn settled lawsuits with 47 plaintiffs in sexual abuse cases for $10 million and agreed to a long list of preventive measures, among them to report anyone suspected of being a pedophile immediately to law enforcement authorities.
It seems that this was part of a previous court order.
So, what do you think about Rahab shielding the spies?
Always made me wonder...
What?
I am a proud member of the Church of the Painful Truth.
Is that the church you are talking about?
Because the media backs government schooling. They’re all part of the indoctrination system. Bad things only happen when you introduce religion into the education system.
Lord have mercy. In second grade, we had a substitute teacher named Daddy Rook. Yes, really. He would rub the backs and sometimes fronts of us little white girls. None of us was developed and were uncomfortable but didn’t know it was criminal until the principal called us together and FREAKED. OUT. after she questioned us.
Of course this happened after being bussed to the poorest section of town for first grade where we were subject to other stuff.
Wonder what the statute of limitations is.
I don’t blame the followers my concern is those in charge. Granted there is something rotten in all different baskets but the one holding the basket should be taking notice and removing said apples from the bunch.
Great point- not like this is a new issue for the Cardinals and the Diocese’s ( whatever plural of that is).
Actually, it is a crime. And a teacher or principle or therapist would be held to the same standard, pretty much anyone but a confessor or a lawyer. I’m a Catholic and live in KC but I think I would have voted to indict. It’s not heinous but did show poor judgment.
The Church is the Body of Christ.
Any other defintition mocks God.
When you choose to use a term that belongs to God, as opposed to say, “The Religious Order of Elk Devourers”, you intentionally mock Jesus Christ.
I won’t wig out about it, but I am not the One you will face someday.
Peace!
It is also a crime to think about a crime and a crime to think about thinking about a crime.
