Rick Perry jobs plan: Make rest of America more like Texas -- Working
Christian Science Monitor ^ | October 14, 2011 | Mark Trumbull

....Not all economists would put domestic energy production among their top five priorities for job growth. But many do see significant potential in this field, as the Perry campaign does.

For example, economist Peter Morici at the University of Maryland, in a recent analysis of the nation's employment crisis, wrote that "shutting down US oil and gas development is costing the US economy millions of jobs."

His view: An emphasis on domestic production could create jobs by dramatically reducing America's trade deficit, thus recycling more consumer dollars in the domestic economy. Promotion of energy production would also spill over into job creation in other industries, Mr. Morici says, as a need for refineries and pipelines boosts demand for construction workers, steel, and heavy machinery.

Even in Texas, the industries classified by the US Labor Department as "oil and gas extraction" and "mining support" account for just about 2 of every 100 jobs. But jobs in basic industries like mining or manufacturing typically help sustain many other jobs throughout a local economy. And over the past decade, Texas has seen energy jobs rise as a share of its economy.

Compared with Texas, other states appear to have plenty of room to grow. In the other 49 states collectively, the "oil and gas" and "mining support" industries account for less than 0.3 percent of all jobs. Those totals don't include some other energy-related jobs, such as in coal mining or renewable sources.

Obama, for his part, has called for some expansion of domestic fossil-fuel production, but has put his greatest emphasis on encouraging renewable sources of energy. Where the words "conservation" and "efficiency" appear nowhere in Perry's speech, Obama has backed programs to encourage energy-saving retrofits of buildings and a shift toward higher-mileage vehicles....

Ha, so I guess the new meme is “Cain supporters = stealth Romney supporters!! You Perry lovers sure are getting desperate. Mormons aren’t Christians, and Romney is also a non-starter for any conservative, so he won’t win. Perry, on the other hand, has succeeded in hoodwinking some genuine conservatives, so more is to be gained from turning his supporters to a true conservative, like Herman Cain.

Perry is already on record favoring legalization.

Perry is for legal immigration...NOT illegal immigration.

We have about 30,000 people PER WEEK moving to Texas...legally.

Perry and the power structure are gaining a short-term economic high but in the long run what they are doing is to make Texas more like California

ROFLOL!!!! What is making "Texas more like California" is the CA people fleeing the mess they have made there...coming to TX!

Thank you for the video interview. I hadn’t seen it.

It shows why Perry doesn’t do soundbite politics, he feels deeply about what he says and when he’s through you know it.

He makes a lot of sense and has a record to back it up. It makes me sick to see slick-talkin' Romney in the lead. He FAILED in MA.

Agree. She’ll be an AWESOME energy secretary for President Cain.

“You cannot bring in millions of illegals to give Texas businesses a cheap labor advantage and have this population live there year after year after year without the pressure building up inexorably to legalize them. Perry is already on record favoring legalization.”

Very true. Here in Texas we’re only about 55/45 Republican. If Perry gets his way, we flip the day. It almost make me wonder if really ever left the Democratic Party.

“Discuss what, cab fees in texas, are the number of illegals driving them. “

Lots of bullying going on in this thread. I hope they haven’t forgotten about that GAY-FRIENDLY Hate Crimes bill that Perry signed, practically in his first day in office. Even Bush-43 vetoed it (and it cost him big-time in the 2000 election).

We might have to turn these people in (LOL).

“Ha, so I guess the new meme is “Cain supporters = stealth Romney supporters!! “

This is getting comical now. Perry has been written off by the Republican base. They got a look at him and he seems to be a LOT like McCain. Even though he had the nomination on a silver platter, he BLEW IT. He will NOT get the base back, and at this point, he can ONLY act as a spoiler to get Romney the nomination (who he’s much closer to anyway).

Should Cain implode, then it’s Newt...it will not be Perry - he had his shot, the party gave him the benefit of the doubt, and he showed them just who he is (and it didn’t surprise this Texan one bit).

Perry is for legal immigration...NOT illegal immigration.

If Perry was against illegal immigration he would be requiring employers to use e-verify like Arizona has done.

If Perry was against illegal immigration he would be pushing for a law like the Alabama law in Texas.

If Perry was against illegal immigration sanctuary cities would have been ended in Texas a long time ago.

If Perry was against illegal immigration he would not be in favor of giving a tuition break to illegals who are not even allowed to work in the country.

If Perry was against illegal immigration he would not be in favor of legalizing the illegals, as he has stated he wants to do: “That’s why I support a guest worker program that takes undocumented workers off the black market and legitimizes their economic contributions without providing them citizenship status.”

What is making "Texas more like California" is the CA people fleeing the mess they have made there...coming to TX!

What is going to make "Texas more like California" is legalizing the illegals, as Perry wants to do.

Let's be honest, the American people in the 21st century are not going to sit still for a permanent "second class citizens" of 20-38 million people. They will give them voting rights, if not the first go around then in a second step.

Perry, with all of his pandering to Hispanics and willingness to cater to the National Council of La Raza, still only gets around 38% of the Hispanic vote.

Obviously, of that vote the percentage willing to vote for a Republican is much higher for the long-assimilated Hispanics. We can assimilate a reasonable amount of immigrants over a long period of time.

But for the tens of millions of illegals, this vote will go 80%+ for the Democrats. When that day comes, Texas will be the new California, and the USA will be well on its way to finally shedding the last vestiges of limited government and free markets and individual freedoms.

A Perry presidency will be a Pyrrhic presidency, as it will be the last conservative in the presidency, whether a compassionate conservative or otherwise, for a long, long, time.

mountains of coal

LOL That we aren't allowed to use so it's being shipped to China for almost nothing because it's cheaper to steal our energy then to use their own slave labor to get it out of their ground. What do you think will happen to your state if Perry sets fire to the EPA?

God bless Virginia, as far as I can tell he is the only one running that gives a damn about your state. Yeah we need your coal and you need our oil and Obama wont let either of us have or use either one.

Out of curiosity, who are you supporting org? All I've seen so far is you showing up on Perry threads to bash Perry with half truths and distortions. Tell me, who is running that can do more for me, my businesses and my employees and their and my families, and I hope to heck you don't come back shouting 999 because I'm going to point and laugh at you.

But to me neither amnesty nor mass deportation is the answer. The first unfairly rewards those who broke our laws, and the latter is not only unrealistic and unenforceable, but it would devastate our economy. That’s why I support a guest worker program that takes undocumented workers off the black market and legitimizes their economic contributions without providing them citizenship status. ~Rick Perry

I agree with everthing Perry said here.

Do you live in TX? Which part?

I have heard news stories that the farmers in Alabama are already worried about having labor to harvest their crops. Renters have empty rentals. And the school population is down...teachers may have to be laid off.

Immigration is complicated...more so than you let on. People on welfare and unemployment don't want a job...just a fact.

I have friends who own several Burger Kings and they have trouble finding help...and a lot they do hire aren't worth minimum wage!
