AP Writes Meaningless Romney Polygamy Story [Weh,Weh,Weh. Old, but a lesson on electability?]
The American Mind ^ | February 24th, 2007

The Associated Press with their inability to write factually on Iraqi violence felt the need to point out that Mitt Romney’s family has a polygamist past. That’s not surprising since he does come from a line of Mormons:

While Mitt Romney condemns polygamy and its prior practice by his Mormon church, the Republican presidential candidate’s great-grandfather had five wives and at least one of his great-great grandfathers had 12.

Real people. Real success stories. Yahoo! Personals. See Stephanie and Mike’s story.

Polygamy was not just a historical footnote, but a prominent element in the family tree of the former Massachusetts governor now seeking to become the first Mormon president.

Romney’s great-grandfather, Miles Park Romney, married his fifth wife in 1897. That was more than six years after Mormon leaders banned polygamy and more than three decades after a federal law barred the practice.

Romney’s great-grandmother, Hannah Hood Hill, was the daughter of polygamists. She wrote vividly in her autobiography about how she “used to walk the floor and shed tears of sorrow” over her own husband’s multiple marriages.

Romney’s great-great grandfather, Parley Pratt, an apostle in the church, had 12 wives. In an 1852 sermon, Parley Pratt’s brother and fellow apostle, Orson Pratt, became the first church official to publicly proclaim and defend polygamy as a direct revelation from God.

There’s no mention or even a hint of Mitt engaging in polygamy. The AP even notes Romney is the only candidate among the GOP big three who has been married once.

If prominent evangelical Christians put out this story I’d expect the AP to publish a story about their anti-Mormon behavior. This story is a cheap shot, a smear. It adds nothing to readers trying to learn about Romney. It does say the AP is quite pathetic to launch such a miserable, meaningless attack. To steal from Iowa Voice, “Does this mean we can start going through Hillary’s family tree? Or Edwards? Or Obama?” There’s also Kevin Hayden: “Did Kennedy get pinned with the Catholic Church’s bloody Crusades? Obviously not. If Mormonism in Romney’s adult life has any black marks against it, it’s fair to look for evidence of Romney’s support of that.”

The anti-Mormon bigotry headlines will disappear and the headlines will turn on the Romney is a Mormon heat.

But....

I have been told by so many here that the new media would not use that against the GOP if he was the nomination. !

I just shocked I say!

odd world view (no matter what it is) = POLITICAL liability

Between the Mormon stuff and his association with Bain capital, they will make Romney look like a cross between Warren Jeffs and Bernie Madoff with a little David Koresh on the side.

Many of Romney’s wives dispute this story.

They are jumping the gun. Don't want that landslide yet. Oh, wait a minute, we had one on Cedar Mountain last week on Highway 14.

Let me get this straight...

Romney’s great grandfather was a polygamist...

Obama’s own father was a polygamist...

Which story to run....???

Hmmmmm....

Just a taste of what he’ll get if he’s our nominee.

Just a taste.

I do believe Mormonism is a cult, but, I don’t hold Mitt responsible for anything his grandparents did. How could anyone? It’s ridiculous.

Who care about romney’s religion? I just can’t stand his defense of romneycare and the flip-flops.
Vote for romney because he sucks less than obama. Wow. This would make a great bumper sticker. I’m so stoked.

Would you hold him responsible for the bigotry of mormonism, prior to 1978 when Mitt was a full grown man of age 30 and refused to condemn the bigotry? You may be sure the press will hold him responsible should he become the nominee.

DEBATE MODERATOR: Mr. Romney, isn't it true that you condemn the LDS's bigoted past and your participation in it?

ROMNEY: No ... I mean yes ... Er ... Yes, I mean yes.

ROMNEY: Actually, I mean no.

ROMNEY: I remember the day I was coming home from graduate school at Harvard. I heard that the LDS church had decided black men could finally ... <sniff> ... I just pulled off the road and cried.

MODERATOR: You cried?

ROMNEY: Yes. I was so happy I cried.

ROMNEY: ...

ROMNEY: Did I tell you I was a graduate student at Harvard?

Yes, if that is true, I’d hold him to account for that.

Based upon your comments regarding Mormons and candidate Romney, it is obvious that you support a second term of Obama. Enjoy the misery that you inflict upon your friends and neighbors in the name of religious purity.
For shame.

That was the stimulus for this conservative district. Of course we can blame it all on Bush and global warming.
