Romney leads Republicans, Cain second: Reuters/Ipsos

Mitt Romney leads the field vying for the Republican presidential nomination but fewer than one in four of the party's voters back him as a surging Herman Cain gains ground, according to Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Wednesday.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, is holding on to his support but failing to increase it significantly, according to the survey, which also showed President Barack Obama facing deep unhappiness among voters about his performance.

Romney was backed by 23 percent of Republicans in the October poll, up from 20 percent in the most recent comparable Reuters/Ipsos poll carried out in June.

Cain, a businessman who has emerged as a surprise front-runner after proposing a radical tax reform, nearly tripled his support among Republicans in the same period, leaping to 19 percent from 7 percent four months ago.

"In the Republican presidential primary, everybody still says Mitt Romney's the front-runner," Ipsos research director Chris Jackson said. "And he is ... but he's certainly not any sort of dominant front-runner."

Texas congressman Ron Paul was third with 13 percent and Texas Governor Rick Perry fourth, with 10 percent.

Supporters of Sarah Palin, who announced last week she would not run for president, have not coalesced behind a single candidate, the survey found.

The poll was conducted October 6-10, before a debate on economic issues on Tuesday night in which Romney and Cain had strong performances and Perry failed to make up the ground he lost when he stumbled through two previous debates.

I’m quite surprise that after all these months, Romney is still stuck at the 23-25% level, not budging from that range at all.

Perry’s done.

His supporters, if they really want to defeat both Romney and Obama, need to get behind Cain.

“I’m quite surprise that after all these months, Romney is still stuck at the 23-25%”

i’m not all that surprised considering the visceral hatred a lot of people on this site have for him. Also with Huntsman in there he kind of siphons off some of the more “moderate” votes. the reason no one else has been able to completely capitalize on his weakness is due to the fact that everyone else is splitting the more conservative vote. Perry had a shot and flubbed it badly. if Romney starts to win actual states when voting starts thing will probably move quickly in his direction. If he won Iowa it would probably have a complete dominoe effect. he is favored in NH but if he were to lose that he would probably lose badly.

75% of R voters do not want Romney even though he has been running since 2007. Once this is down to two contestants he is toast.

Methinks Cain burns out. I’m with Perry - south carolina should determine his fate.

Perry’s done.

He's done in my book. A person who does not stand up for his faith won't stand up for anything. Dr. Jeffress spoke the truth about Mormonism. It isn't the same as Christianity.

Even Muslims include Jesus in their faith.

The question is, "Is Jesus Christ the Lord and Savior of your life?"

Romney is going to lose.

Romney was backed by 23 percent of Republicans

This stooge cannot break 25% no matter how hard he tries. This is more evidence that all the endorsements and cash doesn't do a thing if voters hate you.

Romney couldn't even beat McCain.
He's in denial.
Cain has cleaned his clock, and has left Romney in the dust.
And the LAME Stream Media is still selling horse hockey.

My fear about Romney is that he will bend to the politicians in Washington. Cain on the other hand, seems to be the type that he’s going to try and do what is right for this country, regardless of the other politicians. I honestly believe he is in this race to help this country. The only fear I have about his 9-9-9 plan is that the politicians can eventually raise it to 20-20-20. How is he going to control this and set it so that Washington can never change it?

It’s starting to look like Romney will get the nomination. We must call him out on his belief in man made global warming now. Right now and deal with this.

Wow, a FReeper who is against a candidate because he isn't bigoted enough.

Disgusting!

Yup, Perry is outta-there... I was somewhat excited about his getting into the race, but after his first debate I was non-plused by his performance. Then when he said I didn’t have a heart, regarding his Texas dream act, my emotional response was visceral, “He didn’t have a clue” and there was no way in my mind for him to retract and recover... last night was the last nail in the coffin of his political aspirations. He cannot and must not be our nominee.
