The night of Herman Cain’s “9-9-9 Plan
Yahoo News ^ | 101111 | Chris Moody

There was one clear winner from Tuesday's Republican presidential debate, based on the simple metrics of name recognition: businessman Herman Cain's "9-9-9 Plan."

Virtually all the candidates at the debate table had something to say about Cain's plan to replace the tax code with three, flat nine-percent federal taxes on consumption, business and income. Cain, once delegated to the remote wings of the debate stage, has enjoyed a surge in the polls ever since he won the straw poll in Orlando, Fla., last month, and at the first debate since he joined former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Gov. Rick Perry in the top tier, Cain and his policy proposals took up more of the debate's time than the ideas floated by any other candidate.

Of course, this isn't to say that any of them praised Cain's idea. Far from it. In fact, everyone who had an opportunity took shots at the plan.

I really doubt very much that Mr. Cain is a one issue candidate. His values are peerless. His conduct calm and sure. He is a thinker. One has to be a thinker to be a fixer. Mr. Cain is a fixer. And boy! Does Washington ever need fixing!

The 9,9,9 plan replaces ALL current taxes

It does not ADD on additional tax like has been suggested.

The advantage of the 9,9,9 plan is that if the government raises taxes... It raises taxes on all classes thus making it harder to raise taxes in general.

You really have nothing constructive to say, do you?

I am not rich. Change makes me nervous, especially if I might pay more taxes. But, the current system isn’t working, and we need radical change. His plan is simple and straightforward.

How was Cain’s performance? Did he talk about other things besides 999 when volunteered?

I am not surprised he had to go on defense because being the frontrunner, 999 will be attacked by everybody. That’s not really a concern.

How did he respond to the attacks....well or not?

Thoughts?

Cain was well prepared to respond to attacks on 999. Still, his responses were unpersuasive. (”The plan will pass because American people want it to pass.”)

999 is touted as if that is/will be the entire tax burden.9% sales tax added to a 3% state sales tax added to a 8% city sales tax = 20% sales tax. 20 cents on every dollar spent is a LOT.

HERMAN CAIN NEEDED ARROWS AND NO MORE SOFTBALLS SENT HIS WAY, to toughen him up for the 2012 general election. Obama will be full court press scorched earth against him. This is practice. The front runner, Cain, did just fine tonight. He is good under pressure. Proven. Tested. I was looking and hoping for that.

Think 9% every time you buy a house, car.

That 9% will be recouped of course, the prices of home will inflate, and not because of market value, but because everyone will recoup that tax and pass it to the next buyer. There comes another bubble and one that cannot be corrected, as in the end the value of that home is all TAXES.

The housing industry is the real ENGINE that drives all the economy, without the homes moving/selling nothing/nobody works. Just think of all the industry related to home building and all the things those workers purchase with their income, staggering to comprehend just how much depends on a good housing market.

We need to get it back to a healthy status, and the home interest deductions need to remain. I don't want that to change.

Tax 9% on every new car? It has already devalued when you drive off the lot, how you going to recoup that 9%, on top of the excess tax?

This 999 thingy is just too dangerous a can of worms to open up, IMO.

The correct answer is: CUT SPENDING pure and simple.

The HC 999 plan ELIMINATES , I repeat, ELIMINATES, the current federal tax code.

Soooooooooo...

Do the math on your overall taxes. Not just the sales tax.
Your overall taxes will absolutely positively go DOWN...

BTW where is this location that only has a 3% state sales tax? And why the heck do you buy in a city with a 8% sales tax??? It would be worth the gas to go elsewhere...

BEWARE of Cutesy changes: I.E. McCain/Feingold campaign finance reform.

Just have to remember that when politicians speak of some Catchy change to a program that people hate, the CURE will always be far worse and always in their favor. ALWAYS.

They think long and hard on this stuff, they filter their ideas in such a cute/phrasey way that will appease the peeples and they always go bipartisan to make it look and sell better. Knowing all the while, it really is a stab in our backs. Thing is you will not know it or feel the pain for a long time, and when the truth of it comes out,we would say, "WHAT THE HELL happened?", and they are out of office living it up and laughing at us drones. SHELL GAME.

The problem many are having is introducing a new national sales tax. We know how a Democrat Congress will increase that until it’s 50%, nice and incrementally.

In VA for generations we had a ‘car tax.’ You paid a % of your car’s blue book value every single year. Jim Gilmore came along and ran on a slogan to kill the car tax (he won handily, so unpopular was that tax). The state legislature (R dominated) knocked it down to near nothing, but the tax stayed on the books. It’s now got a new name, but we’re back paying a car tax because the legislature refused to kill it.

So, many of us question introducing a whole new tax that can be taken full advantage of by a future D-dominated Congress. And they’d do it on top of a hefty increase to individual income tax. You can bet on it.

“The 999 plan includes a provision requiring a 2/3 vote in congress to raise taxes. Therefore your suggestion it would become a 20-20-20 is not based an the practical provisions of the plan.”

The congress rats will jettison the 2/3 vote via amendment and incorporate the sales tax. Just another way to bleed us dry. VERY DUMB.

Cain: Big Business CEO, FED Insider and Government wannabe - NOT a good combination!!!

And Greenspan!? Gimme a break!!!

“Set the income tax rate at 9% and add a 9% national sales tax is something the Congress can do. And later it can raise both rates, which it will do.”

Gingrich? Not on your life. Give him a surplus and he’ll happily spend it rather than giving it back. Recall 1994??
