A Theologian Weighs In on the Mormon Church
New York Times ^ | October 10, 2011 | ERIK ECKHOLM

A leading Southern Baptist theologian spoke out Monday

-SNIP-

........In a posting today on his influential blog, the theologian, R. Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., spelled out why traditional Christians do not consider the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to be simply a different denomination of Christianity.

“Mormonism rejects the Bible as the sole and sufficient authority for the faith, and insists that The Book of Mormon and other authoritative Latter-Day Saints writings constitute God’s final revelation,” he wrote. “By its very nature, Mormonism borrows Christian themes, personalities, and narratives. Nevertheless, it rejects what orthodox Christianity affirms and it affirms what orthodox Christianity rejects.”

Dr. Mohler conspicuously did not use the term “cult” and he said: “It is neither slander nor condescension to state clearly that Mormonism is not Christianity.”

-SNIP-

“Competence for public office is also an important Christian concern, as is made clear in Romans 13,” he wrote, even citing a legendary statement, attributed to Martin Luther, “that he would rather be ruled by a competent Turk (Muslim) than an incompetent Christian.”

I won’t even dignify that massive distortion of history, with a response.

I’m not going to change anyone’s minds on what they think about Mormons, so I’m not going to try. But if we play into the hands of the media to let them portray Republicans as a Party that will use a litmus test on ones Faith – giving the impression that we will only vote for Evangelicals, then we have lost this election already. We will lose the Catholic vote, and any Jewish votes that we have gained, not to mention all the other religions of the World that are spread across this country, and moderate swing voters.
This issue needs to be put to rest NOW before it gets any bigger. And that job is now up to Perry.

Wow, I am glad the Catholic leadership is far more enlightened that you seem to be.

Perhaps you should take note...

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

It appears you dont understand the problem...

“Evangelicals” as you call Protestants, and Catholics are all CHRISTIANS...

Mormonism is a completely separate religion...

MORMONS believe something much different to Christianity...

You might know some little part of Mormonism and some little part of Christianity...

But it seems not enough to recognize Mormonism is not a denomination of the Christian Church...

Joey Smith never intended Mormonism to be Christian...

Joey Smith was excommunicated from the Presbyterians and the Methodists for his sinful lifestyle and false teachings...

Thats why he cursed the Christians and introduced false doctrines and practices into his home made religion that went counter to the Ten Commandments..

He declared that he wanted to be a “second Mohammad”... “Joseph Smith or the sword”

He crowned himself “king of the world” (including America)

He ran for POTUS in 1844 intending to be president-for-life..

And to give America a state religion...Mormonism..

Does that sound “peaceful” and “nice” and “conservative” to you ???

there is only one true Christian church, the one founded by Christ, CATHOLICISM

I think, if need be, the Orthodox would argue that point...

Fortunately there is no real need, as I said leadership and most Catholics are a tick more generous that you are...

Well; it's MY hope that I DO change people's minds about MORMONism, and what they do NOT know about it.

That's why I try so hard.

Bull!

We don't have to do ANYTHING to 'let them' paint us with their tar brush!

We will lose the Catholic vote, and any Jewish votes that we have gained...

I think you diminish the thinking abilities of these groups.

The have as sound a mind as you do.

Remember folks; that MORMONism wants us Chrsitians to fight amoung ourselves.

They can then claim the high ground.

Unfortunately, the part you’re missing regarding the authenticity of true Christianity is that it is not determined by conformity to the Bible, but by the Church.

Based upon what authority are you telling me this? (You would probably say based upon Christ's verbal authority of establishing the church)

So ya wanna tell me what difference there is between the authority of Christ establishing His Church and the authority of Christ's words in the NT? Or the authority of the Holy Spirit speaking through men in the Bible?

You're not claiming that Christ or the Holy Spirit have no authority, are you?

A quote from Herman Cain, from another thread:
I’m not going to do an analysis of Mormonism vs. Christianity

Smart man.

Here is my take, I will never vote for Romney. He would have the same result as voting for President Zero. I would venture to say there is a gnats difference between the two of them. It is the same as asking me if I would like death by hanging or death by shooting.

Mormonism isn't a religion I choose or would advocate. That's the sum of my belief on Mormonism.
