Back in 1992 or 1993 a young single woman, withour company, was working with the scouts.
I just happened to see the literature she was using. It was all to discredit Christopher Columbus. It was just a bunch wild accusations, without any historic facts or figures.
At the same time I had just recieved literature proclaiming Columbus to be a very godly man. He was quoted in a letter he wrote the Queen: “There are many souls here that could be added to our Lord and Saviour’s kingdom.”
Now I am over 77 years old; attended public schools, and through college, and never before even heard a hint of how bad Columbus was.
It seemed to me this young woman could not do much damage to the present, she is one of many that would rewrite, and destroy our nations past.
As we are well aware that there are those that build; and there are those that destroy!
You left out that our glorious indigenous people reveled in torturing captives. This was high entertainment for them before and after the white man came. Stuff like carefully slitting a captives belly, pulling the intestines out, roasting them then forcing him to eat them. Roasting and eating children as their parents were forced to look on. Demonic paganism.

I don’t know about the North American continent, but in South America it was the virus Smallpox (Variola), transported from Europe, that did the most killing. It could be said that Smallpox, not Cortez, conquered South America. Also, there is evidence that it did the same along the Eastern Coast of Northern America after explorers exposed the Native Americans.

I thought there were two major outbreaks of a disease in the 1540s and 1580s (if I remember correctly) that killed huge numbers of indians in Central and South America. The Europeans recorded the symptoms and they did not resemble smallpox (of which the Europeans were more than familiar).

The internet has numerous pieces about the 5% to 15% death rate from hanta among UN troops during the Korean War.
The death rates among Indians during the Peruvian, Mexican and North American epidemics are far closer to what we expect out of hanta than out of smallpox.
A major smallpox epidemic leaves enough survivors that they can continue to live their own civilization. A major black plague epidemic leaves enough resistant survivors that further spread stops ~ you can even contain the epidemic if you know the cause. However, civilization changes direction.
A major hanta epidemic of the worst sort DESTROYS YOUR CIVILIATION. Whatever your ancestors developed and learned is all lost. A milder epidemic might do nothing more than wipe out your agricultural working class ~ and you'll need to go out and capture another tribe and reduce them to peonage to do the hard work so you can continue to worship the gods in your stone and brick cities.
Of all these diseases the least dangerous are diptheria, thyphoid, black plague, AIDS, cholera ~ and that's simply because we have a fairly substantial population of people who have an inherited NATURAL IMMUNITY to them. They cannot destroy us all!

Can you provide some reputable references for the inforation you are putting forward about Hemorrhagic virues (in this case one of the Hanta viruses). It sounds like an interesting read. Seriously, I would like to read about this in that it is a topic I deal with professionally. I want to be up-to-date if new/credible information is available.
BTW - I think you will find that in naive populations (meaning never before exposed) that Smallpox is more virulent (stronger sypmtoms and more readily spread) with higher mortalities than the 30% currently listed in medical texts based upon what was last seen before the viruse was eradicated in 1980. Plus, there are reports of hemorrhaghic symptoms in some cases of smallpox. A virulent strain of smallpox (Variola Major) going though a naive population in the Americas could produce epidemics much worse than those seen in Europe and the East where it raged for centuries. Oh, recent DNA studies of remains of “plague” victims in Europe have confirmed it was indeed Yersina pestis (plague) as always thought.
I was wondering if the evidence for Hanta you discuss was based upon doing genetic studies of human remains from these periods of disease in question? That would be more convincing proof and would rewrite history.
Just do a google search for INDIANS HANTA UNITED STATES ~ that ought to give you several thousand references with some recent studies of how it spreads.
The general idea is that since it's a virus carried by a rodent vector (including little ground squirrels) that it will happen during rodent population peaks. Those, in turn, are always related to the return of rainfall after a period of drought.
In the South West this was directly related to the appearance of a heavy mast of pinon nuts (much beloved by rodents).
Regarding other diseases, there were other diseases. One of the other diseases was INFLUENZA. You combine a shot of that stuff with hanta and maybe some variola, you might have one of those 97% death cocktails. That could explain what happened to the Mandan Indians (who Lewis and Clark met on the Way West but who'd disappeared from the face of the Earth by the time he came back East).
There, I just shifted the burden from the Europeans to the Chinese who raise ducks and pigs together!
Frankly, most of the popular knowledge of how the Indians died out was a result of English anti-Spanish propaganda. They didn't really get along for the longest time you know. At the same time no matter how many people Spain could send to the Americas they could barely hang on themselves since the diseases here were killing them like flies in a DDT fog. Later on the English got to experience the same sort of thing ~ this East Coast is just one big malaria swamp ~ and that wasn't brought under control until they built covered sewers in the nascent urban areas.

Tobacco definitely came from the New World. However, it is now considered incorrect (not for political reasons) to say that Pinta - found in the New World (similiar to syphilis) had its origens in Pinta. I believe the researchers have shown that to be false. I made the mistake of saying Syphilis was spread from South America to Europe...I was proven wrong.....wanted to save you the same embarassment.
Not only what you said, but all humans around the world were at one time or the other victims of disease. The population of Europe declined by about 30 to 60% according to historians during the Black Death of the 1300s. The fleas which caused the disease came in from the Orient. It took Europe 150 years to recover. Should we blame the Chinese for slaughtering millions of Europeans? Obviously that idea would be laughed off.
