Lawrence O'Donnell's Offensive Interview with Herman Cain
The Atlantic ^ | Oct 7, 2011 | Conor Friedersdorf

Posted on 10/08/2011 10:32:15 PM PDT by fightinJAG

O'Donnell: I misread your book and its references to the Navy. I thought you served in the Navy. You're now telling me you didn't. Can you explain how you avoided military service during the Vietnam War and during the draft, and why you should be commander in-chief if you did successfully avoid service during the war that came during what would have been your war years? After avoiding the Vietnam War, why should you be commander-in-chief?

Cain: Lawrence, you know, do you stay up nights coming up with the wording of these questions?

O'Donnell: Just thought of that one now ...How did you do that?

Cain: You say, "How did I avoid the Vietnam War?" I wasn't trying to avoid the Vietnam War! Here's what happened, Lawrence. I was working in a critical area called exterior ballistics. I worked on something called rocket assisted projectiles for the Department of the Navy. It was my local board in Atlanta, Georgia, that told me, "We would rather have you continue to do that analytical work, to help the Navy, rather than us draft you." Secondly, when they had the lottery, I made myself available. The year that they had the lottery for the draft, they did not draft me because they didn't get to my number. So I think that's a poor choice of words on your part to say that I "avoided" the Vietnam War. I made myself available to my country, and they did not draft me. The rest of the time I was serving my country in a critical role called exterior ballistic analysis. So I am offended with your choice of words in terms of what I was doing during the Vietnam War.

Could Obama have volunteered for service at age 17 and up?
You see, I am not questioning why Obama specifically did not serve, I am only raising a question as to why Larry O’D never has a problem with liberals not serving, not a single time.

I personally do not think every single person needs to serve in the military. We simply do not need that much man power.
And there are many many other jobs which people can do which are just as important as serving in military. The job Cain did for US Navy in ballistics and projectiles is one such job.

Wasn’t that the man O’Donnell kept shouting “Creepy liar!” at on the air?

MSNBC is an on-air wing of Bellvue.

I wasn’t politically engaged in my youth but I will NEVER FORGET what they did to Clarence Thomas.
Even then I knew something was very very wrong with TED Kennedy’s party.

With the left, it’s always personal, never about policy.

Just like they did with Sarah Palin.

If the GOP nominates Cain as their candidate, the MSM will make what they did to Palin look like compliments compared to what they will to do Cain.

It has already started.

They fear a genuine black man that is smart and articulate, not like the clown they propped up.

Absolutely—I almost mentioned Thomas in that post. I clearly recall how his comment about ‘uppity blacks’ was completely dismissed across the board, as if it were simply ridiculous and the dems couldn’t POSSIBLY be racist. Most of the commentators didn’t understand he was not talking about the traditional concept of an ‘uppity black’ (one standing up for his civil rights or ‘talking back’ to ANY white), but the idea that ANY black man having his OWN opinion that didn’t fit with what blacks were ‘supposed to’ think and say was what made him that in the eyes of the establishment libs.

Clarence Thomas’s on-air savaging was meant as a warning to any black person who dared be an individual, truly free to have his/her own thoughts as any white is allowed.

O’Donnell neatly exposes his and the left’s racism by the mere fact that he would never ask any white candidate similar questions. There’s not even a question that he would ask any white if he or she should be ‘grateful’.

Obama was born in 61, he’s too young to have served in Vietnam. Although I doubt very much that the coward muslim would have served anyway.

Yeah really! I was also not referring specifically to Viet-Nam. My only point is Obama could have volunteered when he reached military age, sometime around 1978-1980, but that did not bother Larry one bit. Larry is only bothered by Cain not volunteering while draft was actually in place. The hypocrisy is transparent.

It’s one thing to voluntarily take an important position at a now controversial institution and another to do absolutely nothing questionable at all and have some news interviewer attack you for it.

Yes, the line of criticism of Cain from Paul supporters would be his stint at the Fed. It’s a legit criticism. And Cain has a legit response.

I mean it, really do, Onyx. Love those pictures you posted - sorta wish we could recapture it all. Really, never thought it would stop so abruptly - I guess I wasn't ready for it. But, she will always be "THE BEST" person to lead this country and that's a given. However, the thought of those with venom in their veins benefiting from her restoring our country gives me some peace that she isn't running and; moreso, if she had to risk her safety. She raised the bar on what I expect in a president so ......

When I think of her, I think of you!! And you always had the right picture to fit the occasion - don't know how you did it but you did! And always had the up to date news.

FR/JIM, YOU, SARAH = The Best of America! A place to report, the reporter and the leader! We don't need anything else. OK, the airwaves - Rush! ;) All the best to you and yours ALWAYS!!

If you watched Thomas’s comment about it being “a high teck lynching” the dems were struck dumb and quiet...Thomas got the post and they had nothing that they could say after that...The look on the democrats was a sight to behold...and such great talkers those lib senators are...:O)

Not trying to defend 0bama, far from it, but didn’t the draft end in 1973 and the Vietnam War ended a couple years later? He was born in 1961, which made him only 12-14 years old. I’m just pointing this out in the context of serving in Vietnam War or not, which was the point of King v. Cain discussion.

The really interesting thing about Obama's draft registration is that according to the document number, he registered in 2008, which is late, and handled the same way as all the parking tickets he never paid around Harvard until he was running for the presidency...

Ted K was particularly hung over during those hearings as I recall. Wasn’t that right after his nephew was arrested for rape, so he had to just kind of sit there looking fat and boozy? I may be recalling another of his embarassing appearances.
