The Cook Report: It’s Perry’s to Win
National Journal ^ | 8th October 2011 | Charlie Cook

Posted on 10/07/2011 1:47:11 PM PDT by shield

Now that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has announced he will not seek the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, all of the Republican donors, elected officials, and party activists pining for a savior to jump into the race must face the reality that the field is set. They need to channel Stephen Stills: “If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with.”

No doubt the fundraisers for Mitt Romney and Rick Perry are tying up the phone lines into New York’s financial district, wooing donors who had either been holding out for Christie or had used him as an excuse to remain on the sidelines.

Both the Perry and Romney camps can argue that the Republicans who would have supported Christie will now gravitate toward their candidate. Perry backers can point to Christie’s brash, in-your-face style and say that the Texan is more temperamentally and stylistically similar. In that sense, it’s true, Romney and Christie could hardly be more different. But ideologically, Romney might actually be a closer match. It’s hard to imagine Perry mimicking Christie’s support for the ban on assault rifles and current gun laws or saying, as Christie did when he was running for governor, that he is anti-abortion, but would not “force that down people’s throats.” The truth may well be that social and cultural issues aren’t particularly important to either Christie or Romney.

In the end, it’s a good bet that neither Romney nor Perry will inherit an appreciable number of supporters; it’s the donors who wanted Christie who are now in play. With the fourth quarter just getting started, it will take a while to ascertain who wins the donor primary.

I've not decided since Sarah announced her choice and I've been drunk for two days, but I listened to Herman Cain on C-Span today, and he killed the audience...they wore out their suits jumping up and down.

He was really very good and I'll be watching him as I keep my options open.

IMHO the 3rd tier opponents have all shot their wad, and did so early in the campaign.
Herman is still in the running but he is starting to get flak.

By the time we get to the nitty gritty I suspect Perry will still be standing and HPV, In State Tuition and Naggerhead will all be old news that have been laid to rest.

If Perry wins I hope he picks Scott Walker.

Wouldn't that be something? Gov. Walker doesn't get anywhere near the credit he deserves.

I am sure, Herman Cain is going to win the straw poll tomorrow with a huge margin

I actually thought of that this morning. West would be awesome and that would be a bad ass power ticket too.

. And I worry that FR will be the stompin ground for a third party candidate if Romney wins. And while I don’t want Romney to win, I don’t think a third party would be at all wise.

Romney is my last choice, but he is 1000 times better than obama.

I know that Jimbo detests romney, I'll never believe that he'd promote a 3rd party if romney gets the pubbie nomination.

If a third party movement gets started, on FR or anywhere else, I'm out of there.

I saw what happened with that flopped eared little billionaire, peROT.

The USA had 8 years of blow jobs, secret technology sales to China, murder {ron brown, marcy park and others}, and backing of the mooselimbs over the Christians in Bosnia and I could go on, but you all know it.

It’s getting exciting. Cain - Perry - romney. While Romney is the best looking, Perry is gutsy and completely Alpha and Cain has a no-holes-barred approach who can relate to the common sense folks. I’ll take Cain or Perry or BOTH!

Perry's position on immigration is not as bad as many are trying to make it out to be. As far as actual immigration itself, Perry has pleaded with the feds to secure the border.

The issue of in state tuition, is very common around the country and becoming more so.

The TX legislature voted nearly unanimously in favor of the instate tuition. It should be cast aside as an issue.

Perrys record on Illegal immigration is actually VERY STRONG.

I will never understand why he accepted full responsibility for the in state tuition thing and made it his own.

The bill passed by an unvetoable number in the legislature with only 4 dissenting votes.

Perry has a lot of character and old-school traditional values. He’s not prone to attack his peers, nor sugarcoat his decisions and back away from them.

You have to admire his tenacity on any issue.
Mitt, Newt and the rest seem to be shapeshifters.

Perception is everything.

In the debates, he comes across as an Open Borders, La Raza cheerleader.

Hope he gets some better debate coaches and LISTENS to them.

The bottom line is will Governor Perry gain the confidence he needs from the independants. That performance in the GOP debate in Orlando, FL was the mojo killer in Perry’s campaign. Now he needs to make up for lost ground. This next GOP debate set for October 11th at Dartmouth College, will be the acid test to determine if Governor Rick Perry is real conservative gold or fool’s gold.

I have confidence that Rick Perry will, like the Texas Rangers, knock it out of the park.
