PROVIDENCE, R.I. When Rhode Island became the 13th state to allow in-state tuition for illegal immigrants at public colleges, supporters heralded the move as one that would give students the kind of advanced education they need to succeed in the workforce.
But students who are not here legally may still face a major obstacle even with the benefit of a college degree: Many have no immediate pathway to legal status and, under current federal immigration law, employers cannot legally hire them.
"I know of students who have graduated magna cum laude and top honors in their colleges, but right now they're working minimum wage in restaurants," said Antonio Albizures-Lopez, 20, who came to the U.S. from Guatemala when he was 1.
Albizures-Lopez, who is pursuing legal residency, says the best solution is passage of federal legislation, known as the DREAM Act, which provides a pathway to legal residency for college students.

Does anyone ever mention they are citizens of their own country? Go there and apply to enter here legally, if you wish.
Illegals in Mexico suffer much worse fate than that. They are summarily jailed and then deported pronto. No chance to attend college in Mexico on illegal status.
Tough sh**. Why don’t they take their illegally gained education and return to their home country. I am sure they would be welcomed there and easily get a LEGAL(for their county) job.
Don’t care. They should be shown the door.
Go back to your country of origin and use the education us taxpayers paid for in order to better your country so more don’t follow you.
I’m fed up with this bs.
Well, THAT's a lie.
Unless it's the Acme School of Dog Washing and Dishwasher Repair, or they got a degree in Queer Studies or a similarly useless major. Anybody with top honors/magna cum laude would have a job lined up and the employer would be fast-tracking a citizenship application for them as an "essential employee".
This guy's just making up a sob story hoping somebody will buy his shpiel.
Gee, they cannot get a job as one cannot hire illegal aliens. My a.. bleeds for them. They are free to go back home and ply whatever trade the idiots from the states paid for them to learn.
Also known as the superhighway to the jobs unemployed Americans would like to have.
Well, how about trying to go back to PedroLand - I’ll bet you could land a nice job with that magna cum laude in your pocket - maybe even brush up on your Spanish.
What is it about the word “illegal” that is so difficult for Leftists to understand?
...no one will answer if they want to become citizens...because no one will ask...THEY DO NOT!
I am so sick and tired of them trying to make us feel sorry for these illegals.

Hey, are you making fun of EVERY community college or well over half the universities in America?
Well, you’re dead on! I know whereof you speak - my best buddy from university days in the ‘60s was the dean of admissions for one of the nation’s largest community colleges. His deadpan line when the topic came up:
“We gwine ta collie.”
Sadly, he wasn’t kidding. He often said the first three semesters in community college were devoted to covering what these freeloading, underwear and ass-crack showing yo-yos should have learned in high school.
This concerns me.
Why do any of them have a pathway to legal status? They are here illegally; they are lawbreakers. They have shown they have no respect for our laws, our constitution or for that matter, taxpaying American citizens.
The fact that politicians vote to subsidize their college education knowing they cannot be legally employed after graduation shows a a deviousness and intent to help illegals further circumvent the laws.
Does it ever occur to state legislators and governors who pass these laws that they violate a federal statute?
Does it ever occur to them that they are subsidizing an illegal to take a college slot that rightfully belongs to a legal citizen and resident of their state?
Any politician that does anything to implement these Dream Act laws belongs in prison.
That's if they are lucky. If they are not so lucky, this happens only after they are robbed and/or raped.
I am sick to death of the coddling of people who ILLEGALLY enter the country and then stay here to cost us BILLIONS. IF I were president I would tell the ICE agents and BP to get off their asses and DO THEIR JOBS. I would tell Congress to sop pissing around and BUILD THE DAMNED FENCE!
This is probably the time when they start to realize that they are here illegally. The quasi-illegal (being students provide them some cover with regard to legality of their status) to illegal would open their eyes completely that finding jobs, etc., would need paperwork and SSN.
I had no idea there were that many states:
California, Connecticut, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Texas, Utah, Washington, Oklahoma
