HOUSTON -- Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Thursday that he would definitely consider an invitation to run as the eventual nominee’s vice president, except if the nominee turns out to be Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
Cain, who rocketed to the top tier of the GOP field in several recent polls, was asked by reporters on the campaign trail for his thoughts on a hypothetical invitation to run as the eventual nominee’s No. 2. After offering the obligatory comment that he intends to be the nominee, Cain said, “Quite frankly, based upon Gov. Perry’s position on some issues, I would not be comfortable being his vice presidential nominee.”
Those issues include Perry’s moderate stances on immigration. As governor, Perry supported legislation offering in-state college tuition for the children of illegal immigrants, which has become a flash point in his campaign. Cain said, “Issues relative to being soft on the border, issues relative to the whole, you know, tuition for children of illegal aliens. And I haven’t totally gone through all of his positions, but a lot of positions I have questions with.”
Cain, who is black, was critical of Perry after the Washington Post reported Sunday that his family owned a Texas hunting camp once known as “Niggerhead,” a word that was also painted on a rock near the camp’s entrance. Perry has maintained that his father painted over the word as soon as he bought the property in the 1980s. And Cain subsequently said he believed Perry’s explanation.
Of a vice presidential slot in general, Cain said, “I would not say no to being vice president of the United States. But it would depend upon who got the nomination. I will support who gets the nomination. I know I have said that there are some people right now who I cannot support, but I wouldn’t say no to it. I could say yes. But it has to be someone who I believe I can complement them in their job by being able to bring my skills to the table.”

Nonsense, and an insult to the Tea Party.
Perry is the stalking horse, intended to divide conservatives, and make clean sailing for Romney, but it backfired. There are two parties contending for Republican ticket, the establishment and the Tea Party, and smart people know that Perry is with the establishment.
None of that legally forces Texas to charge in-state tuition to the children of illegals.
Only problem is he never said any such thing.
When you have to willfully distort what the other candidates say in a vain effort to prop up your candidate's campaign, you have lost the debate.
Glad you like Perry. That does not excuse knowingly lying about what Cain said.
Cain was asked a question, he answered it. Sorry the Perry supporters find the issue the question was asked about so embarrassing.

Unlike the other candidates, Perry is the only one who has been forced to deal with the border as a governor.
By the way, all of these children who were dragged across the border by their parents have SS numbers issued to them by the federal government. That’s all they need to even apply to college.
Perry did not invite them to sneak across, he simply ended up getting stuck with them after the fed failed to do their basic job of securing our borders.
Can you imagine the republican nominee having to go on record as either forcing out of state tuition, or even denying a public education to these “residents”, who all have SS cards, and whose parents built our homes, fixed out roofs, picked our crops,...etc.
I fully agree that this whole issue stinks, but Obama would not love nothing better than to batter whoever the nominee is over the head with their anti-”latino”, pro-mass-deportation, border wall position.
I’m not latino, but one thing is for certain. The latino voting block will be a very, very, powerful force in this election. And Rick Perry’s position, albiet a controversial and debatable stance, is the only one that can neuter Obama - tough on border security, but humane on the children of illegals who the fed dumped onto him.
Most folks on FR need more evidence than an opinion that a few Perry campaign shills on FR are pulling out of their rear ends.
That’s not true - he spoken against Romney’s jobs plan at least once and Romneycare several times.
Not to mention the history of racism in the mormon church

I guess that's why they were begging Christie to get in and when he didn't they gave their money to Romney.
Perry could have simply said that a strong majority of the people of Texas wanted it and as an elected representative he went along with that.
But his comment about the critics of such not having a heart shows in turn where his heart is - in the wrong place for a lot of the base. And that is a very difficult impression to try and turn around once it has been made.
Actually you need to bother to read and comprehend the sentence rather then desperately looking for some completely nonsensical thing to complain about.

Any doubt that you ever had a thought about the candidates other then blind adoration for Perry was removed by that statement.
I don’t think Cain needs to worry about being asked since Perry has done an incredible job in destroying his chance at the nomination.
Why? Cain formally endorsed Mitt Romney in 2008.
And why are people so misinformed about Cain's "conservatism?" His 9-9-9 plan RAISES taxes. One of those "9's" is for a national sales tax. This would be imposed ON TOP OF existing sales taxes. So, a new water heater from Lowe's would cost you around 18% in sales tax.
What is conservative about raising taxes?
Cain has his nose so far up Romney's butt it makes me sick. And if you go back to the last debate, I'm pretty certain that Romney said he would pick Cain as his VP!

For all his conservative bonafides, it is astounding to me that Herman Cain continues to treat Romney with kid gloves.
When you have to start lying about the other candidates in a vain attempt to help your candidate, you have lost the debate. Glad you like Perry. Lying about Cain does not help your candidate. It makes you look childish and ignorant.
