Believe it or not, a place exists where companies are hiring like crazy, and you can make $15 an hour serving tacos, $25 an hour waiting tables and $80,000 a year driving trucks.
You just have to move to North Dakota. Specifically, to one of the tiny towns surrounding the oil-rich Bakken formation, estimated to hold anywhere between 4 billion and 24 billion barrels of oil.
Oil companies have only recently discovered ways to tap this reserve. And along with the manpower needed to extract the oil, the town is now scrambling to find workers to support the new rush of labor.
Watford City is at the center of the Bakken formation. While it is home to less than 3,000 permanent residents, there are about 6,500 people there right now, as job hunters relocate to seek out high-paying jobs.
Aaron Pelton, the owner of Outlaws Bar & Grill in Watford, said his sales have been nearly doubling every year -- and it's only getting busier. Servers at his restaurant make about $25 an hour when tips are factored in, and kitchen staff employees make around $15 an hour.

Barring government interference, these jobs will be around for decades too.
too late obama’s job is to destroy this nation. he is coming.

We’ve got a brother in law who works on a road repair crew...lodging is really difficult for the guys to find; he’s considering buying a travel trailer for next spring’s tour.
Does anyone REALLY think those “poor, downtrodden” protesters are going to move to NORTH Dakota? It get very cold there, and there is always snow to be shoveled and it gets dark early and you must BUY warm clothes for the winter weather and scrape ice from the windshield BEFORE you drive to work and your ears get cold and..and..and..and
I wonder if they could use a good watchmaker up there? I know extreme cold tends to affect batteries adversely.
Then- when people did not get free money they packed up and went to where the work was.
Now-after yet another extension of unemployment benefits and eating food from your "independence" card- why even bother?
What construction/pipeline experience I have is mid-80s in high school and doubt I would be wanted. Wonder what the outlook is for technical types up there? I have had some experience in arctic cold but that was early 90s in Norway.

The article points out that one should be sure to have lodging before heading out there.
Read the article. Sounds like they need lots more than just folks for the oil fields. If you are looking...might be worth doing your own due diligence ....good luck!
A smart young person would consider starting a business there.
Lawyer, plumber, accountant, hairdresser, anything.
a former boss of mine who once lived there told me “there IS no cost of living in North Dakota”
Same here in south Texas. $26.50 per hour, two loads per day and 70 hrs per week. That is over $96,000 per year!
The local talk show had a guy call in and he said a trucking company has 100 openings. Of the 100 applicants, 70 failed the drug test.
too many applicants fail drug tests
Was that you calling in to KLBJ this morning?
Not me, what was said?
This is about the affect on the area in more than just oil field jobs.
When oil field jobs suck up lots of the available labor pool, jobs in other fields are going unfilled, while the population boom puts greater demand on the whole area.
You don’t have to be a welder or pipe fitter. There are increased IT needs just because of the other work.
From the thread you linked in #11 above, the large percentage who failed the drug tests.
Sorry I wasn’t clear.
What was said calling in to KLBJ this morning?
