Yes, that Shakira: Leading a slew of otherwise routine new appointees to the President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics is Colombian pop star Shakira.
"Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll is a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, record producer, and dancer," the White House said. "In addition to her career in music, Ms. Mebarak Ripoll has been involved in a number of global educational efforts."
And we totally want pool duty for her first meeting with advisory commission, where she will join the other new appointees: a councilmember from Montgomery County, a grassroots activist from New Mexico and a school superintendent from Arizona.
Shakira also is active in education and developmental issues. She became a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador in 2003 and started her own foundation helping schools and other initiatives in Colombia, South Africa and Haiti.
