(Elyria) - A judge in Lorain County has sentenced a woman to 15 days in jail for choking a 71-year-old Wal-Mart greeter who asked to see a receipt as the woman left the store.
Elyria Municipal Judge Lisa Locke graves sentenced 49-year-old Toni Duncan on Thursday for what she calls the “absolutely reprehensible” attack last March. Duncan was sentenced after pleading no contest and being found guilty of assault.
According to the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram, the defendant also was ordered to take an anger management course by year's end and stay away from the Elyria Wal-Mart and the victim for five years.
The woman's 23-year-old daughter was sentenced to three days in jail for disorderly conduct and also was ordered to stay away from Wal-Mart for five years.

In an authoritarian and statist society, there is no ambiguity. In a free republic, there is often ambiguity and conflict. I prefer the ambiguity and conflict inherent in a republic, instead of the certainty that facist regimes offer.
As a practical matter when I politely refuse to allow my property to be searched as I leave Wal-Mart, they let me walk on by.

Unknown to me, my husband put an electronic tag in my wallet one day. Every time I exited the door at Wal-Mart, the alarm went off. So embarrassing.
I agree. The sentence of that judge amounted to a dereliction of duty. 15 days is nothing for what that woman did.
Well it is irritating to be asked for the receipt but choking is a little extreme.
I have heard stories about salespeople in the Dayton area being ATTACKED physically when they attempt to stop a shoplifting.
Not going to name the protected race involved, the initials are AA and he was wearing a coat with inside pockets, cramming expensive steaks in the pockets. WHen the butcher confronted him, the customer beat the butcher badly.

I think he was let go. No one would tell me what happened to him. One day my husband went to Sam’s and found someone that gave more info. He was there for a long time though.
Didn’t the greeter know that she was just doing what Obama told his voters to do? She was making that evil rich company pay it’s “Fair Share” and spreading the wealth!

I confused the hell out of one of those people at Sam's club. I bought 4 tires, 4 installation packages and 4 road hazard warranties for 12 items on the receipt, but only had four tires in the cart (the installation bays were not connected inside the store, so you had to haul the tires around the building). He had a hard time figuring out how 12 items matched with 4 tires.
Checking your receipt when you exit the store and checking inside the shoe box (checking inside the shoe to make sure you’ve bought a left and right shoe, and the size matches) when you purchase shoes is not to help you. Its to make sure that you’re not stealing from them.
You are wrong. They check while you are still in the store. What they are checking is the time stamp on the receipt.
It prevents you from making a purchase and returning to the store with the receipt in your pocket. Picking up the same merchandise and leaving using the old receipt.
People get more fragile as they get older. She might have killed him or caused severe neck injury. She should have gotten at least 6 months.

Agreed. The Walmart stores near me are 100% off limits. No civilized Americans to be found.

Sorry, sir, I see where you’re coming from, but I think you’re wrong.
If you decide to shop at a private property establishment, you are implicitly agreeing to abide by their reasonable expressed and implied policies. For instance, they might have a policy of refusing to allow concealed (or open) carry of weapons on their property. Or they might insist you wear shirt and shoes, or ask to see a receipt when you are leaving.
If you don’t like those policies, you have every right to refuse to ever enter their store again. You just don’t have the right to refuse to abide by them while you are on their property.
BTW, I don’t think anybody has mentioned one of the main reasons they ask for your receipt. They draw a line on it with magic marker to show it’s been checked. This prevents the person from later entering the store with an unmarked receipt which they then use to get cash back for an item they just picked off the shelf, keeping the original item.
I would think you are on THEIR property .. having purchased said products from THEM .. They have right to see that you did indeed purchase them ..

Gotta say tho’ I’ve only had my receipt checked at Walmart once - it was in Raleigh, NC a few years back .. not the worst - but not the nicest part of town..
