ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - According to a police booking report, Al Unser Jr, a retired American race car driver and two time Indianapolis 500 winner, was arrested early Thursday morning.
Around 3 a.m. , officials say Unser, 49, was in his white 2011 Chevrolet Suburban and racing another car going westbound on Paseo del Norte in Albuquerque. Deputies say they clocked both vehicles on radar going over 100 miles per hour. The posted speed limit in that particular stretch is around 60 mph.
The report states the vehicles were traveling so fast and weaved at the last minute across lanes near the Coors off ramp, the other cars had to slam on their brakes.
Deputies say they smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Unser's breath. He submitted to a field sobriety test which he failed. He submitted to a breathalizer test which returned a .16.
He has been charged with reckless driving, aggravated DWI and racing upon a highway. Unser was released from jail on his own recognizance.

Didn’t he throw his wife or girlfriend out of a moving vehicle some years back?
DUI was his hobby...
I am glad he didn’t kill somebody. He was a great driver, but he really trashed his life.
He was sober for a while, though. He used to talk about AA and stuff.
Maybe he’ll try again. I hope so, he’s a good guy and his family and ours go back some years, decades.
Yep, pretty sad. I guess he got drunk and beat up his wife sometime back. He must have a little Uncle Bobby in him.
Racing a Suburban? Okay....
He’s lucky he didn’t kill someone. Many years ago in my neck of the woods a couple of redneck dingelheimers decided to go racing on the highway; one of them ending up plowing into the back of a station wagon carrying an entire family of four or five people, killing them all in the ensuing fire. The perps are probably in the big house to this day.
Again?
Who does he think he is, Barney Oldfield?
“””racing another car”””
Apparantly, Unser not only got the DWI but he also lost the race as there was no mention about the other person being ticketed.
What hurt the most?
The DWI or losing the race?
Tough love, that would be. Good for him, and good for his potential victims.
An idiot for sure.....doing 100 mph in a Suburban?....Good grief Charlie Brown!
The article says he lost to a black sedan last seen heading north on Coors Blvd.
For people who are not from Albuquerque Paseo Del Norte is full Al Unser Jr’s and that is why I try to avoid it as much as possible. I was coming home from the airport Sunday and witnessed two idiots racing on Paseo. This past Friday two guys racing Mustangs caused a bad accident on I-40.
I hope they make an example of Unser big time.
