The White House hit back Wednesday against New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's contention that President Obama has been a "bystander" to the nation's problems.
"There were no bystanders in the Oval Office," presidential press secretary Jay Carney said. "In the past two and a half years that Barack Obama has been president, it has been one of the most substantial periods in our history."
Mr. Carney went on to cite the "enormity" of the challenges that faced Mr. Obama when he took office, including a deep recession and global financial crisis. He said Mr. Obama made "a series of incredibly challenging decisions" to solve those problems.
Mr. Christie, in a speech Tuesday night at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California, said Americans "continue to wait and hope that our president will finally stop being a bystander in the Oval Office."

“Dems immediately sense that Christie is the alpha male in the room and they lamely try to take back dominance.”
Christie would absolutely destroy Obama in a debate and leave him whimpering in a fetal position. The Dems’ worst nightmare is Obama being exposed in public for the empty suit that he is.
No Kidding...And how many times did the Bush White House “fire back?”
“Presidential press secretary Jay Carney?”
He should change his title to be more accurate. Maybe something like:
Presidential Chief Propaganda Officer Jay Carney
It was the Democrats in Congress that wrote from scratch “obamacare” because the Bystander-in-Chief could not.
It was the Democrats-in-Congress that wrote from scratch the pork-stuffed stimulus because the Bystander-in-Chief would not.
The only budget he’s proposed is “Last Year plus 8%” whcih was so dumb not one Senator would vote for it.
Maybe he can’t write anything. Except Bill Ayer’s “Fugitive Days” which is stylistically quite good.
The Obummer is incredibly thin-skinned. He’d be better off just ignoring such comments, rather than whining about them. It just makes him sound all wee-wee’d up.
Yeah, I don’t know what Christie was thinking. Obama has been like a whirlwind, at least domestically. It’s been one thing after another. Socialist healthcare, the Stimulus, the buyout of GM, EPA to regulate CO2, appointment of a big time lefty to SCOTUS, ending of DADT, then you’ve got a surge in Afghanistan and a drawdown in Iraq, the Libya thing, the killing of Osama bin Laden, that stupid missile deal with the Russians...all of this in only three years.
Christie, for whatever reason, seems very reluctant to criticize Obama in any substantive way. Making Obama sound simply inept is perhaps as close as he will get to criticism, but I think it misses the whole point.
Obama is a ruthless person who wants to impose an entirely different system of government, economy and even belief on the US, and while he is not bright enough to figure out how to do this himself, he doesn’t need to be - there are people behind him, ranging from Bill Ayers to Jeremiah Wright who can do that. But at the same time, they couldn’t do it without him: He is an egomaniac whose very self-obsession makes it possible for him to roll over law and custom to achieve those goals.
What a perfectly blue-state criticism from Christie. Liberals wish Obama would only do and have done more.
