The number of illegal immigrant college students paying in-state tuition and receiving financial aid at Texas' public colleges and universities continues to climb, according to state higher education records.
During the fall semester, 12,138 students - about 1 percent of all Texas college students - benefited from the state law granting in-state tuition, according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Most of the immigrants among those students are illegal, and some others are not legal permanent residents or U.S. citizens.
Texas awarded about $33.6 million in state and institutional financial aid to those students between fall 2004 and summer 2008.
In 2001, Texas became the first state in the country to pass an in-state tuition law. The law created a national movement. Many private universities also now award aid to illegal immigrant students.

If you are a veteran with a battlefield disability, live in a different state but
would like to attend college in Texas, Texas sends you a message:
Thank you and it means a lot to me. I tell my kids born here how lucky they are to be American.

If a disabled vet lives in another state, they would be eligible for their own state benefits or federal benefits to attend school in TX.
But if/when they graduate they'll still be illegal so presumably they won't be able to be hired. Which makes it a waste of time and money giving them the break on tuition. Unless of course you put them on a path to citizenship which is what it's all about anyway for the elites running the show.
No, they cannot go to any state. Most states offer in-state tuition, however. There is a residency requirement in TX, for example, of three years. It is NOT full tuition.
But, if you are an American citizen (veteran or not) and reside in a different state but would like to attend college in Texas you have to pay out of state resident tuition while illegal aliens get preferential treatment. Here is the message Texas sends to you:
If you are a veteran, disabled or otherwise, you have other better benefits available. If you are a disabled vet, then you should contact the school in TX that you are interested in.
If you are just using the misfortune of vets to promote your own candidate, then you should contact the Westboro Church.
Are you pretending to be obtuse or do you really not understand the objections to the Texas Dream Act?
The point is that in Texas illegal aliens are given preference, in the form of financial subsidies, over genuine, authentic, legal American citizens.
Not only is this immoral, unethical and un-American; it is a violation of federal law:
Federal Law Title 8, Chapter 14, Sec. 1623 states:
“an alien who is not lawfully present in the United States shall not be eligible on the basis of residence within a State... for any postsecondary education benefit unless a citizen or national of the United States is eligible for such a benefit.”
But Texas, like several other states, has decided to ignore this law and elevate the interests of illegal aliens above those of American citizens.
That Governor Perry has signed this into law is bad enough, but to call critics “heartless” is beyond the pale.
Well said.
There really are families dealing with disabled vets, etc. I'd really not waste my time with the likes of you.
I don’t know where I read or heard this, but I’m pretty sure a US citizen can reside in Texas for ONE year and receive in-state tuition at Texas universities and colleges unlike the THREE year requirement for illegals. I could be wrong. Most states have a one year residency requirement for in-state tuition for US citizens.
By doing this only encourages more illegal immigration.
No?
This same policy is offered in 45 other states, as well.
Texas under Perry started this disgrace, as Texas was the FIRST state under Perry, to go down this path, by passing in-state tuition for illegals.
Perry's stance on illegal immigration and treatment of illegals is sinking him.
And there is no way he can walk it back after his strong defense of the Texas Dream Act and calling critics heartless.
I believe he and his supporters have seriously misread the importance of the illegal immigration issue to conservatives. It is not a stand-alone issue as it is a big factor in our budget and deficit problem, entry of illegal drugs, health care costs, welfare and food stamp costs, social security and ID fraud, school and college costs, jobs availability, and crime. It even raises concerns about third world diseases and terrorists entering the country.
Stopping illegal immigration and ending handouts and services to illegals would go a long way to helping us begin the process of putting America back on the road to prosperity.
Yep. This fraud will never get my vote.
I'm refuse to get lied to, bushsh*tted and hoodwinked again by these political deceivers and frauds.
To be honest, every time I see Perry and his animated phony facial expressions, my first thought is, "Oh gezzzz, here we go same GD thing all over again".
If that is all you are concerned with, then just vote for Obama. He's done so much more than Perry on that issue. /S That's right, Bachmann used your word magnet in relation to this issue. Vote for her, she looks like a really well-balanced candidate for you.
If the worst thing Rick Perry did was not veto a legislative act ten years ago that allowed IN-STATE tuition rates to students that met residency requirements; mandated and killed a bill for a vaccine; and called some people heartless--then he has my vote. After reading what some people post around here, heartless was much too kind a word.
Name some big issues in America today that is not directly related to these tens of millions who are gang raping our system at every level.
Take your time.
Here’s a few: the economy, Obamacare, and the economy. Did I mention the economy?

Are you joking?
You *cannot* possibly be this dense or naive.
Tens of millions of illegals have taken hundreds of thousand of jobs met for Americans, they have driven the wages down in entire industries, they are choking off our healthcare, jammed our emergency rooms, hospitals, jails, schools, they are choking off our welfare, our social services, and have created epic fraud within our economy. Not to mention Mexicans send tens of *billions* out of the U.S. back to Mexico. I could go on.
Is it possible you can be this naive?
Well said!
Such things are intuitively obvious to the unbiased observer.!
