Wills: let me fly on... Prince tells Queen he wants to stay in the RAF...
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 26th September 2011 | Rebecca English

Prince William has told the Queen that he wants to remain in the RAF for as long as possible before he becomes a full-time royal.

The 29-year-old future king is desperate to delay plans to enter the ‘family firm’, and instead wants to focus on his job as a search and rescue pilot.

His decision to stay in the RAF after 2013, when he is due to leave, has the full support of both his grandmother and his father, Prince Charles.

Flight Lieutenant Wales, as he is known in the force, works as a Sea King co-pilot based at RAF Valley on Anglesey.

He also carries out around 40 public engagements each year – when work commitments allow – in connection with the charities he supports. In comparison, his 85-year-old grandmother still undertakes more than 300 engagements a year while his father, Prince Charles, conducts more than 500.

William had been due to leave the force in around 20 months’ time, after a three-year tour of duty.

But despite the popularity of the prince and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, he has made it clear his day job as a pilot comes ahead of any public engagements.

William has discussed his decision with the Queen and Prince Charles, both of whom have given their unequivocal support. ‘The Queen, in particular, is very sympathetic to the Duke of Cambridge’s feelings on the subject,’ a source close to the prince told the Mail.

Wonderful photo. she adores him...

BTW, if any of you are unfamiliar with what a very real and gutsy person the Queen is, I highly recommend you watch the movie "The Queen"

flying is just way more fun that being a prince of a dying dead empire.

The last Hapsburg Monarch died recently... During the Second World War, Churchill offer to grant India independence after the War, in return for cooperation during the War. Ghandi noted that Churchill's promise was a blank, and Nehru added, "drawn on a crashing bank."

The thing is, he isn’t Prince of a ‘depressing dying empire’. Even if you believe that the UK is going downhill (and there’s truth to that, though I think it gets exaggerated at times), there’s over a dozen other Commonwealth realms that he will one day be King of, not to mention, likely being Head of a Commonwealth of over one billion people. And while he doesn’t have a lot of power over government, he does have considerable influence over a great many other institutions. If he chooses to, he can achieve a great deal through charities and NGOs - it will be up to him if he does.

His grandparents do 3-500 engagements a year. That is impressive too, in different way, but considering their ages etc...

On the occasions I've found myself in a room with her, she absolutely terrifies me - in the way a cross kindergarten teacher terrifies a four year old. This is despite her always being charming.

It's her confidence and strength - it seems to radiate out of her. Now, she is my Queen and I am a monarchist so I might feel something like that anyway, but at least some of it is personal. She has just been there so long and is just so used to being in charge.

They are visiting Australia next month - this will be at least their third “last trip due to their increasing age.” And their itinerary would exhaust me and I’m 30 years younger than the Queen.

That is a great photo of the Prince of Wales. I didn’t know he was a helicopter pilot.

Not all freepers dislike the Prince. Clearly, the MSM, for some reason, has been very unkind to him. They have been worse to Camilla who appears to be a lovely lady.

The media picks and chooses their deity and their targets. And many fall for it, unfortunately.

his father, and his grandmother and his grandfather - the most important people in his lives in terms of opinion that matter - served their time in uniform

the Queen served time in the military?

Being a natural-born Yankee boy, I’m not that big on royalty. However, I was stationed for five straight years in the UK, and found that the people really had warm feelings toward the royal family. If we HAD to have a monarch, QE II would be a good one. God Save the Queen!

His grandparents do 3-500 engagements a year.

That's what Paris Hilton does also. Her job is showing up places and being herself.

Just saying. Don't get me wrong, I like the British monarchy. But "doing engagements" is not all that hard, no matter how high the number seems.

It's the island of Angelsey, where RAF Valley is located. Beautiful place!

This is there too, Beaumaris Castle:

It's a beautiful example of Medieval castle design.

I like these two princes, they have been fun to follow.

I do too and I don't think I'm alone in saying that his wife is the most beautiful non celebrity woman I have ever seen..........And speaking for myself only, she's more beautiful than any of the celebrity women I have seen.

Fully clothed she just radiates beauty...and that's all I need to see of her.

Yes, but the Queen Mum doesn’t do her engagements on her back.

Read “Common Sense”... by Thomas Paine. If you can refute his take on the sheer lunacy of hereditary monarchies, i’d love to hear it.
And it’s sickening to think a modern people will kneel and bow to any royal. A royal should always bow before any freely elected leader,,,period.

She certainly did. She spent the last year of the Second World War as a driver with the "Auxiliary Territorial Service" one of the British Army's arms for women that existed at that period. She drove trucks carrying military equipment all over Britain.

She was 19 at the time - the minimum age girls were permitted to enlist in the ATS.

She does everything that way, if they buried her correctly. The Queen Mum died in 2002.
