From the bottom of the polls to the top of the pack, businessman Herman Cain won the Republican Party of Florida’s nationally watched presidential straw poll Saturday in a sign that frontrunner Rick Perry is in deep trouble.
Cain’s victory with 37 percent of the vote was a major defeat for Perry, the frontrunner in Florida and national polls, who garnered only 15 percent after wooing the nearly 3,000 party faithful with a free breakfast and mailers.
The vote also showed how soft Republican support is for Mitt Romney, who came in third with 14 percent. Unlike Perry, though, he avoided schmoozing the GOP voters, called delegates.
"Folks, this is what you call momentum," Cain, the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, said in a video message from his campaign bus. "The Herman Cain train is picking up steam."
That means more national media attention, heightened standing in the race and access to more fundraisers.
The straw poll is a mock election and doesn’t necessarily reflect the sentiment of the voters at large. In past years, it has predicted the party’s national nominee, but that streak could be in jeopardy because even some Cain voters had doubts about whether he was ready to be the party’s nominee.
Still, the vote is a major indication of how badly damaged Perry was by a poor debate performance Thursday when he fumbled answers and failed to give specifics.
Many straw poll voters were especially dissatisfied by the answers Perry gave over his moderate immigration position, the “Ponzi scheme” of Social Security and his plan to inoculate girls from human papillomavirus.
“I came in thinking Rick Perry,” said Tommy Langford,a Gilchrist County commissioner who voted for Cain. “I didn’t like the debate at all. I really thought Perry lost it. Mitt Romney called him on immigration. He said we have to take care of them. Not if they’re illegal, we don’t.”
Another big loser: Michele Bachmann, who came in last place. Once a top-tier candidate who won the Iowa straw poll, she has fallen from sight in the debates where she, too, fails to give specifics, excite delegates here or even reach out to them.
Perry issued a written statement congratulating Cain, saying the vote underscored the fact that the conservative message of job creation, fiscal responsibility and limited government is gaining momentum.
“Floridians and voters nationally want a candidate who is clear on the issues and talks honestly about the future,” Perry said, “not someone who takes multiple sides of an issue and changes views every election season. Today’s vote demonstrates that Floridians are energized and ready to help get America working again.”
Pinellas County delegate Rachelle Warmouth said that, if Perry lost, it wouldn’t be the end of his campaign. But when or lose, the debate performance and the effect it’s having on party loyalists are a call to step up his game.
“He’ll have to have a strong recovery,” she said. “He needs to focus on his message.”
Warmouth’s friend, Eileen Blackmer, agreed: “He needs to work on the three C’s: Be clear, be concise, be complete.”
Lee County delegate Dane Eagle said he’s for Romney. He likes the candidate’s message and polish on stage. And he fears that President Obama would walk all over Perry in debates.
“That’s what Obama does,” Eagle said. “He debates.”
St. Johns County delegate Randy Covington said he arrived in Orlando ready to vote for Perry, but the debate "shattered" that plan. Covington decided to support Cain after the businessman"s rousing speech on Saturday at the Conservative Political Action Conference. That event was wedged in between the party’s Presidency 5 Thursday debate and Saturday straw poll.
But Convington said he wasn’t sure if Cain would or should be the nominee. He said the primary shouldn’t be a two-man race.
"We need this process to go on," Covington said.
Gov. Rick Scott, who announced the results from the Orange County Convention Center stage, said the candidates “need to take very seriously whatever the results are.”
"It shows you something. Florida is important," Scott said from the Orange County Convention Center stage. "It pays to be here."

Yep. He thought AZ's law was ok for AZ but not right for Texas. I guess someone needs to tell him that what he thinks is good for Texas must not be good for the rest of the country, since so many bailed on him.

Until now I was undecided between Perry and Palin should she run. Now I’m thinking, “Ta heck with both of ‘em, I’ve always like Cain, why not?”
If he can get folks like me who’ve dismissed him as not in the running off our lazy butts, I could have someone I really want to vote for.
Looks like the folks in Florida raised some “Cain” and right now he’s probably the best one in the ring.

Perry’s campaign had courted Presidency 5 delegates for weeks and printed up glossy fliers that were distributed throughout the convention hall in Orlando, but the Texas governor captured just 410 votes, or 15.4% of the vote.

At first this looks good but there is something going on here I cant cheer. Perry is likely dropping in the FLA polls because of Romney’s attacks on Perry on SS. It is no accident that GWB won FLA after his Medicare handout bill.
Romney has another advantage, he is not in office. Perry and Bachmann are in office and still have to serve their state voters while Romney can now and he will, claim anything he thinks sounds good.
No one wants children to suffer because of the actions of their parents but it’s a sad fact of life it happens and not just illegals. Parents go to jail for breaking the law (unless the law you break is entering the country illegally, evidently), for making bad choices that keep them in poverty, or lose a family fortune, etc. Some lose their parents whose parents have done nothing wrong, but instead are off defending their country. They don’t get any perks except through private foundations. On the other hand, parent’s good choices will life their children up.
The sins of the father are visited on the sons, unfortunately. It really bothers me that since the state now knows where these people are they don’t send them back. There’s no reason they can’t continue to apply for citizenship. If they have jobs they excel at they should have no problem getting green cards at the behest of their employer. My husband works in the semi conductor industry and I see this happen all the time and from many different countries.
If we aren’t going to follow our laws then we might as well not have them. For those who break the laws and their families things will be harder but laws do make everyone equal. It isn’t the fault of Americans or Texans that these children’s parents chose to broke the law. The onus is on them to straighten things out and do things the right way.
My cousin married a man from Mexico. When he arrived here LEGALLY WITH A GREEN CARD he spoke no English. He worked hard, took English classes (along the way he met my cousin & they married). He took citizenship classes and is now a citizen. He doesn’t have his family come live with them illegally, though his parents would love to be here with their 3 grandchildren. My cousin & husband just aren’t in a position right now to sponsor them. So they’re waiting until they can. Imagine what a slap in the face it is to people who did things the right way. That’s why you see people like Michelle Malkin (whose parents also came the right way) the most vocal opponents to these kinds of things.

Not quite. You don't have to be a Texas HS grad. You can have a GED in Texas. No age requirement. And you don'tg have to apply for US citizenship, just do so when you are eligible to do so. Here is an excerpt from the Texas Dream Act
SECTION 2. Section 54.052, Education Code, is amended by adding Subsection (j) to read as follows:M.
(j) Notwithstanding any other provision of this subchapter, an individual shall be classified as a Texas resident until the individual establishes a residence outside this state if the individual resided with the individual's parent, guardian, or conservator while attending a public or private high school in this state and:
(1) graduated from a public or private high school or received the equivalent of a high school diploma in this state;
(2) resided in this state for at least three years as of the date the person graduated from high school or received the equivalent of a high school diploma;
(3) registers as an entering student in an institution of higher education not earlier than the 2001 fall semester; and
(4) provides to the institution an affidavit stating that the individual will file an application to become a permanent resident at the earliest opportunity the individual is eligible to do so.
Under these criteria, you could be a 25 year old illegal who entered this country at age 22, resided in Texas for three years, got a GED, and applied for in-state tuition at a Texas state college. And how is the requirement to file an application to be a permaenent resident enforced? Who decides when an individual is eligible to do so? Normally, such applications for LPR are filed in the country of origin. You don't enter the US illegally and then file for permanent residency. Illegal entry disqualifies you. And finally, it is illegal for an illegal alien to work in the US and it is illegal for an employer to hire them.
The “have a heart” was lame, but has some relivance because the students in question did not come here on their own, so why should they be made to suffer because their parents did wrong. See the point?
So what should we do for those poor children who don't want to go to college. Should we provide them with free vocational training? Giving illegal youth de facto legal status is deeply unfair to those immigrant parents and their children who obeyed the law. And once you start handing out amnesties, you inevitably create more incentives for illegal entry. Moreover, allowing illegal students full access to Texas’s university system while making them pay out-of-state tuition like every other non-legal resident of Texas — such as citizens from Arkansas or Oklahoma — hardly constitutes a denial of education, as Perry implies
I can’t believe Romney let it slip that he a a global warmimg believer. If I wanted to fool GOP primary voters, I would have kept my mouth shut. Fortunately for him, no debate questions about that yet directed at him, and the Media does not seem to want to hurt him until he wins the nomination.
He is playing the McCain strategy and most conservatives told me McCain couldnt get the nomination back then too. That is what worries me,

I knew a little about him, but I hadn't read his entire resume before now. Forget comparing obama to Perry or Romney, compare obama to Cain!
I used to listen to him on an Atlanta AM station and heard enough from him to believe the Republic would be in good hands. Can't say that about obama! Yeah, they should be scared.
