Governing Principle
There can be no homeland security without border security, and there can be no higher priority than protecting our citizens.
While our focus begins with preventing the worst of the violence currently raging in northern Mexico from spilling over into the United States, the violence is only part of the destruction that can result from a porous border. The free flow of drugs, weapons and people resulting from inadequate security can undercut economic development, education and trade. As such, they can hurt Texas families in every way imaginable, from loss of jobs to the loss of family members to addiction, imprisonment or death.
Border security is a federal responsibility but a Texas problem, and Texas has invested hundreds of millions of state dollars in efforts to support and supplement security forces already in place. Still, this is a problem that will only be solved with more federal accountability and involvement.
Highlights
-- Starting in 2005 with Operation Linebacker, the state has sought to provide funding, manpower and equipment to local law enforcement agencies operating along the Texas-Mexico border.
-- The state's latest operation, Border Star, builds on the successes of previous operations with unprecedented local, state and federal law enforcement coordination. With the assistance of the 80th and 81st Legislatures, the State of Texas has been able to appropriate more than $110 million each session to fund and amplify these efforts.
-- In response to a rising tide of gang violence in Texas communities, the Governor allocated $4 million in criminal justice grants to cities across the state to increase patrols of gang hotspots. In 2009, Gov. Perry worked to secure more than $10 million in state funding for enhanced anti-gang efforts during the 2010-11 biennium.
-- In September 2009, Gov. Perry announced the formation of highly-skilled Ranger Recon Teams â which include Texas Rangers, Texas National Guard Counterdrug forces, Highway Patrol and DPS Aviation assets â in order to address threats building in the unincorporated areas along the Texas-Mexico border.
-- Since early 2009, Gov. Perry has repeatedly called on Washington to authorize the deployment of 1,000 Title 32 National Guard soldiers to the Texas-Mexico border to support border security operations currently underway. (see letter to President Obama, letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and request to Defense Secretary Gates)
--Gov. Perry has also recommended an expeditious deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles to provide real-time surveillance and intelligence to law enforcement on the ground.
What have any of the other candidates have done?
Perry understand the border problem first hand.
He wants to secure the border so that it actually WORKS, not put up a long unsupervised fence which will do nothing to actually stop illegal immigration. He wants real people to guard the border, which is the only thing that works.

Perry Blasts Obama on Border Security: Either He Has ‘Poorest Intel’ or is ‘Abject Liar’
As governor of the state with the longest stretch of border with Mexico, Rick Perry weighed in with his thoughts on security and blasted President Obama for once having stated that Texasâ border with Mexico was “safer than it’s ever been.” Perry went on to accuse the president of either having the “poorest intel” of any president in history, or of being an “abject liar” to the American people.
When asked what would make the U.S. border with Mexico secure, Perry responded that, to be successful, the task “requires a commitment” by the federal government to “put boots on the ground.”
Nonsense. The only thing that'll work is a multi-pronged approach -- cut off the welfare freebies, deport, erect a barrier, and deploy more manpower. Perry advocates only the latter.
Rick Perry Asks Obama for 1,000 More Border Troops in Texas
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20013096-503544.html
Texas Gov. Rick Perry greeted President Obama in Austin today with a request for an additional 1,000 National Guard troops in Texas at the U.S. - Mexico border.
....”he pulled a letter out of his pocket and handed it to White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett.
The administration’s plan to deploy 1,200 National Guard troops across the border, including 286 in Texas, is “clearly insufficient,” Perry wrote in the letter.
“American lives, jobs and safety depend on a more robust federal commitment to border safety and security,” Perry said. “
You secure the border, nobody gets in. PERIOD.
THIS is what works.
Although I think he’s done-for, I was with him on the issue of the wall.
There’s a wall NOW. It’s called the law. If we don’t enforce it, we won’t enforce it with a wall either.
Walls have gates. If we’re not enforcing the law now, why would we be careful to keep the gates closed?
We will look the other way as they go through the gates, just as we look the other way right now as they break existing law.
Only difference is, the wall will waste money. Lots of it. Ongoing.
Oh, and it might attract vandals, graffiti artists, bombers, and smelly protestors.
Perry is pro-illegal alien. Period. He provides PREFERENTIAL treatment of them (for their votes) as opposed to REAL AMERICAN CITIZENS (including LEGAL aliens) that must pay FULL PRICE for instate tuition. Why should LEGAL American citizens pay for tuition for ILLEGAL law-breaking illegals?
That is the real issue and Perry has is no better than GWB on this issue.
E-verify
It boils down to him saying I don’t have a heart if I don’t think I should help pay for the education of people he thinks I should help pay for.
This guy needs to learn a lesson from Davey Crockett and he’s not getting my vote. He was. But now.....he’s not.
What BA@#@ he has to make such a statement. Screw him.
Tuition for illegals sunk Perry in my considerations for POTUS.
So let’s keep Obama — he is just so much better than Perry on all issues dear to conservatives, he deserves another four years.
That conveniently ignores the tens of millions of illegals who are already here sucking the American taxpayers dry and committing a high rate of violent crimes. The only way to get them to leave is to cut off the welfare. ...and deport.
Perry channeling his inner Lindsey Graham isn't going to get it done.
Many thngs about Perry worry me but until I heard about the tuition arrangements for illegal aliens, I could tolerate if not endorse them.
The tuition deal is the kiss of death.
I would never ever support him in the primary.
If he wins the primary and becomes our nominee, will I vote for him?
There would be no choice but I hope we pick a better man; and Romney is not that man.
Hey Genius. It’s not the general election. It’s still the primary and I have other very viable options.
You vote for this arrogant jerk who thinks people who don’t agree with his idea of giving money away to Illegals before actual Americans means they are Heartless. It’s your vote.
And I live in Texas. He’s an embarrassment.
If I'm heartless because I believe ILLEGALS shouldn't get a free ride while LEGAL CITIZENS have to pay their own way!!!
I don't understand why the Perrybots don't get this???
I live in TX. The Governor can send our NG to the border anytime he wants. Only thing is the state of TX has to pay for it. Lots of folks here are for that but we don’t get the say so.
