From Bad To Worse
September 24, 2011
It happened again. I got the urge to clean my office. Before I could resist, I had created an even bigger mess than I started with. One pile turned into many piles when I started sorting books, papers, and magazines. As the mess mushroomed, I lamented that I had started. But there was no going back.
When God recruited Moses to rescue the Hebrews from slavery, their situation went from bad to worse as well. There was no doubt that the job needed to be done. The people had been crying out to God to help them (Ex. 2:23). Reluctantly, very reluctantly, Moses agreed to appeal to Pharaoh on behalf of the Hebrews. The encounter did not go well. Instead of releasing the people, Pharaoh increased his unreasonable demands. Moses questioned whether he should have started (5:22-23). Only after a lot more trouble for a lot of people did Pharaoh let the people leave.
Whenever we set out to do something good, even when were certain that God wants us to do it, we shouldnt be surprised when the situation gets worse before it gets better. This doesnt prove that were doing the wrong thing; it just reminds us that we need God to accomplish everything.
There is only One who knows
All the answers to my woes;
He will all my needs supply
When in faith to Him I cry. Morgan

Take One part Allman Brothers, One Part Steely Dan, One part Eagles and One Part Grand Funk. Add generous portions of Marvin Gaye, ZZ Top, The Outlaws, Chicago, Little Feat, Creedence, Boz Scaggs, J. Giels and Crosby, Stills & Nash - Simmer in Country-Rock, Pop and Boogie, Soul and Funk mixture with a just a pinch of Jazz, Bluegrass and Gospel - stir thoroughly until it cooks - spice it with a hint of Santana, Jackson Brown and Sam Cooke ... and you just might come close to unique sound of The Doobie Brothers.
Signed to Warner Brothers Records in 1970, the band's self-titled debut album was largely ignored by critics and the public upon its 1971 release - except by musicians and music industry insiders who heard something fresh and very, very special. By word of mouth and constant touring, the post-hippie boogie band made a mark and by the release of their second album in 1972 they were one of the hottest bands in the world. Their breakthrough Toulouse Street was driven by singles like "Listen to the Music" and "Jesus Is Just Alright". By 1973, The Captain and Me was even more successful, spawning Top Ten hits "Long Train Runnin'" and "China Grove." 1974 saw What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, which launched their first number one single, "Black Water," and featured heavy contributions from Steely Dan sideman Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. By 1975's and 1976's Takin' It to the Streets, Baxter had joined the Doobies full time and the band continued the formula by adding another former Steely Dan sideman, Michael McDonald. In 1977, the group released Livin' on the Fault Line, Minute by Minute in 1978 and One Step Closer in 1980. By the end of the decade they had a string of gold and platinum albums; more than a dozen hit singles under their belts as well as a score of bootlegged live recordings bubbling through the underground.
I first saw The Doobies in 1973 supporting a Loggins & Messina tour. But even then, they were no typical back-up band or opening act. They tore the Richmond Coliseum apart and even after 3 encores, the foot stomping ovations lasted the entire 25 minutes between sets and well into the Loggins & Messina show. A large portion of the crowd departed after The Doobies left the stage, especially their hardcore following of leather-clad Pagans, Renegades and Hell's Angels which made up a sizable contingent of the choice seats. That those three rival motorcycle clubs could co-exist with the freaks and stoners without violence was notable.
By late 1975, constant touring was beginning to take its toll on the The Doobie Brothers, especially leader Tom Johnston who was diagnosed with stomach ulcers. His condition worsened and several shows had to be canceled. With Johnston forced to reduce his involvement with the band, the other members considered just calling it quits, but while in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, member Jeff Baxter suggested calling up friend and fellow Steely Dan graduate Michael McDonald who at the time was between gigs. McDonald was reluctant at first, feeling he couldn't fulfill the keyboard requirements the band expected, according to him, "...they were looking for someone who could play Hammond B-3 organ and a lot of keyboards, and I was just a songwriter/piano hacker. But more than anything, I think they were looking for a singer to fill Tommy's shoes." He agreed to join and met them at the Le Pavilion Hotel in New Orleans where they moved on to a warehouse to rehearse. Word spread quickly throughout the Big Easy and I was among the many musicians who hung out on Tchoupitoulas Street that week where they rehearsed. It was simply profound to hear the mojo coming from that warehouse at all hours and to socialize with Skunk Baxter, John Hartman and Keith Knudsen on their breaks. Michael McDonald seemed to have a profound effect on the Doobies, breathing new life into an already polished trademark sound and though he expected to be finished with the gig once the "Stampede" tour was completed, he was surprised when the band invited him to the studio to work on their next album. McDonald's contributions began a whole new chapter for the band and again The Doobie Brothers rose to the top of the Pop charts.
In late 1977 and '78, when I was performing with The US Navy Showband South, Manuel Constancio (on Guitar), Art Brockmeir (on Bass) and I, broke into a trio for a portion of our show. We had first performed the songs "China Groove" and "Long Train Runnin'" as members of The US Armed Forces School of Music Rock Ensemble in Little Creek, VA and once we introduced them in the Showband they became staples in the show and the highlight of our set with the horns supporting us, almost five years since they had first topped the hit parade. Those two tunes became so popular with our audiences that we often saved them for our encore because it was impossible to follow the excitement those songs generated with the mostly high school aged audiences we targeted fpr recruiting purposes. There's something about that chunking guitar, funky bass line and solid "in the pocket" back beat combined with those soaring harmonies of "Long Train Runnin'" that screams, "This is American music at its finest".
In 1982, the Doobies announced they were disbanding following a 1983 Farewell Tour. The live farewell album became one of their best sellers and joined no less than 5 Greatest Hits compilations on the record store shelves. A long drought followed with Michael McDonald embarking on a successful solo career throughout the eighties and even more Doobies Greatest Hits packages released, introducing them to a new generation of fans. Because McDonald made his bones as a Doobie Brother and because he often employed Doobie alumni on his many projects, I've included some of Michael McDonald's great duets and solo outings in this juke to pump up the volume.
The first reunion of the Brothers came in 1989 with the album Cycles and another successful tour. 1991 saw Brotherhood and another greatest hits tour. In 1996, the Doobie Brothers reunited with all their former members (on stage together for the fist time) and performed a benefit concert for the Wildlife Conservation Society, which was captured on a double-disc live album, Rockin' Down the Highway. In 2000 they reunited again for Sibling Rivalry. In July of 2004 they recorded another live album Live At Wolftrap. Their most recent studio album World Gone Crazy in 2010 has propelled them to tour once again, supporting a remarkable four decade run. This year, in 2011, they released Live at the Greek Theatre 1982 once again rekindling the nostalgia of the band in their heyday. There's no doubt that there will be more to come and The Doobie Brothers will continue as a major force in our popular music culture.
A Dobbie Brother concert today is peppered with three or four generations of fans as Grey-haired grandparents boogie along with the kids who weren't even born when the band was at their pentacle. From the beginning, The Doobie Brothers have defied labels and the music critics. They've always been a proverbial square peg that didn't fit the round hole of Pop music, yet they have reached unprecedented success since the trio called Pud first changed their name to the hip moniker for a marijuana cigarette in the 70s. Warner Brothers evidently knew "Pud" was unacceptable slang, but when they signed The "Doobie" Brothers, the inside joke found Pat, Dan and Tom getting the last laugh. Over the decades the term doobie has become passé and passed from the lexicon, but The Doobie Brothers have remained to stake their claim as one of America's greatest acts in show business history. So hold on for a wild ride 'Lil Buckaroos, I guarantee some old favorites, some undiscovered nuggets and some extremely rare live bootlegs that I negotiated on the peer networks and personally edited and remastered just for this jukebox. Truly, that long train is still runnin' strong and after all, without love, "Where would you be now?"
