EXETER, N.H. Rick Perry is struggling.
Republicans in early voting states, once excited about the Texas governor's presidential bid, are openly questioning the strength of his candidacy. High expectations have been met by the sudden national scrutiny that comes with the front-runner bull's-eye.
Perry is leading national polls, but he is also facing intensifying criticism from the right and left. Some Republicans in Iowa and New Hampshire are expressing doubts, especially after debates in which rivals raised questions about his record on immigration, public health and Social Security.
One national immigration group says Perry is finished. Conservatives are slamming his support of education benefits for illegal immigrants.

“The rest of the country thinks he stinks”
Pretty arrogant to be speaking for the whole country
don’t you think?
Bash Perry but don’t suggest an alternative, or if one is
suggested its somebody who isn’t running, at least not yet.
We went through this in 2008, nobody that passed the Free
Republic purity test made it to the General election.
Mike
Oh, and...welcome to Free Republic!
I said long ago that Perry's popularity would wane once America learned of his record. They have and his numbers are falling.
As I said, observant.
I'm not even a die-hard Perry supporter. I don't offer my opinion to blame anyone, I just feel that people need to stop the group hysteria that Perry blew any chance he had over one issue.
But maybe I'm not looking at this thing right. Who do you support? If we have a perfect candidate and I've missed it, I'm anxious to climb onboard once I've been introduced to them.
I disagree, Tony. Obama is failing, and falling out of favor so badly with the American public, that anyone who can project an aura of adult leadership, and who can articulate a sensible plan for restoring America, will destroy him in the general.
Palin is my personal choice, but there are at least three (besides Romney and Perry) who are currently running, that can also beat him.
“I just feel that people need to stop the group hysteria that Perry blew any chance he had over one issue.”
It’s not even the issue so much as his insinuation that we are bigoted (two debates ago) and flat out calling us heartless last night. It’s not hysteria, he’s done this to himself.
“But maybe I’m not looking at this thing right. Who do you support? If we have a perfect candidate and I’ve missed it, I’m anxious to climb onboard once I’ve been introduced to them.”
There is no perfect candidate. Vote your heart in the primary. I will. And my heart says “Cain.”
exactly.
Does attacking the people whose votes you want sound like a good strategy?
Now there's something we can agree on. :-)
There are LOTS of legal Hispanics in TX, not just illegal. These legal Hispanics vote in elections there too.
Not true. He takes the constitution very seriously. I am from TX.
He may be thinking he can piss off conservatives and still win with the liberal/ILLEGAL alien supporters, a sampling you can find here at FR.
LOL! How many times are you going to post this copy&paste crap?!
I understand that. Thanks.
Speak for yourself. He is a social, fiscal conservative, pro-life, and a friend to Israel. This is what is important to me. He is not perfect. If you want a perfect candidate, he/she is not there that can beat Obama.
“Accusing opponents of his policy as being heartless for not wanting children to have an education is just the sort of outlandish accusation that would make Saul Alinsky and Obama proud.”
I think Americans are tired of being called names, of being blamed for everything under the sun. It is especially harmful when it comes from the lips of our would be leaders.
I want someone who unabashedly loves this country, loves it’s citizens and understands our plight. It is time WE were number 1 and I won’t vote for anyone who doesn’t understand that.
Until I irritate the hell out of a Perrybot. Mission accomplished.
lol. good luck with that strategy, he’s going to make Dole look like a master strategist at this rate
Obama stopped deportations from TX, so perhaps blame him.
He was a boxer who punched himself repeatedly
We are heartless and hate people whose last names sound different.
Why would any sane conservative vote for a politician who says that??
