Michele Bachmann
Bachmann is serving her 3rd full term in the U.S. House. Founder of the House Tea Party Caucus, worked as a tax attorney, and was a foster mother for 23 teenagers. She is a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
Herman Cain
Cain is the former chief executive of Godfather's Pizza and former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. He lost the Georgia Republican primary for a U.S. Senate seat in 2004. He was recently the host of Atlanta-based radio show.
Newt Gingrich
Gingrich served as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999. He represented Georgia's 6th congressional district as a Republican member from 1979 to 1999. He has a PhD in modern European history.
Jon Huntsman
Huntsman was Utah Governor, former ambassador to China under Barack Obama.
Ron Paul
Paul is serving his 11th full term in the U.S. House. He’s an ob-gyn and was Libertarian nominee for president in 1988. He unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for president in 2008
Rick Perry
Perry is the three term governor of Texas, from 2000 to current. He is a retired Air Force captain for former farmer. He has a degree in animal science.
Mitt Romney
Romney was governor of Massachusetts (2003 to 2007) and former CEO of Bain Capital, a private equity investment firm. He unsuccessfully sought the Republican 2008 nomination for president. He has an MBA (Harvard) and JD (Harvard Law).
Rick Santorum
Santorum served two terms in the U.S. House and two terms in the U.S. Senate. He became the Senate's third-ranking Republican in 2001. He was defeated for reelection in 2006.
Gary Johnson
Johnson served as governor of New Mexico from 1995 to 2002. He founded what would become one of the largest construction companies in New Mexico. He has competed in several triathlons and climbed Mount Everest.

Could well be true, but Newt has a bit more baggage and often comes across as lecturing (its okay for him to lecture the press, but not the electorate). Also, it’s hard for me to get that picture of him on the couch with Bela Pelosi out of my mind. :-)
I get that. But I don’t think that someone living in our country illegally should get in-state tuition over an out-of-state US citizen.
No, my son could not just move to Texas for a year and get in-state tuition as long aswe still claim him as a dependent. We do things the legal way.
My son will probably get a scholarship to A&M, so it’s a mute point for us.
I would be upset if illegals in California paid in-state tuition fees.
I am not a fan of it.
I understand some of the reasoning for it, and my understanding is that only about 1% of enrollments fall into this category, but I'm not a fan of it.
Do you seriously think that illegals (aka MEXICANS) plan 3-5 years out so that their kids can qualify for in state tuition? If not, then it isn't the magnet that some want to claim it is.
Personally, I'd rather see these kids get an opportunity to better themselves rather than end up on welfare.
IMO, it would be better to work on keeping the criminals out of the country, rather than worrying about young people that will eventually become educated citizens.
I know, it’s something of a crap shoot with any of them...all of them have warts while most of them have at least a few good positions/qualities. Cain touts his zero political experience as a plus and in some ways I’m sure it is, but in other ways maybe it’s not when trying to convince people to vote for him for the most important elected office in the world. Regardless, IMO all of them are infinitely better than enduring another 4 years of the seditious Marxist.
I think when Perry got in, I was starting to tilt towards him because I don’t want Romney. After learning more about Perry and seeing these performances, tilting away from him. He seems to be a RINO like Romney, just on different issues. This is turning into 2008 all over again, where I didn’t like any of the “front runners” (except Fred Thompson, but I don’t think his heart was in it at all).
I get the impression that if we asked all conservatives, without regard to who is actually running, who do you want to nominate for President, they’d mostly answer Jim DeMint. The most common “second choices” would probably be Palin, Ryan, and Daniels. I don’t think anyone would say Romney or Perry. Maybe if the answerer’s last name was Romney or Perry.
I’ll be voting for whomever gets nominated. But in the primaries, I’m starting to tilt towards either Newt Gingrich or Herman Cain. Unelectable? I don’t buy that. If they were debating Oblahblah tonight instead of other Republicans (and whatever Huntsman is supposed to be), I think either of those two would’ve beaten him hands down based on what I’m seeing.
In-state tuition rates, not complete tuition. And only if they qualify academically, I assume. And they wouldn’t all be going to the expensive universities. That bit about how much it would cost for each student was very deceptive.
Border protection is much more important. And he sounded OK on that to me.
My grandchildren,who live in the Northeast,would love to go to the University of Texas at in-state tuition rates.
Guess that’s a no-no though.
I had the same impressions, except I learned to despise RuPaul even more.
BTW, my cousin the druggie wants to know where Deadhead Gary gets his stuff.

I think RuPaul is the “faux fur” of the Conservative Movement. I place him in the same category as Comrade Bernie Sanders and Dennis “The Red Menace” Kucinich, “Left Field Without A Glove”.

Here is my one concern should that happen. I think Newt is at his best right now because he’s basically taken the approach that says: “I’ve got nothing to lose. I’m going to be myself, make my points, and let the chips fall as they may.”
That is, he can “play loose” because there’s no down side. If he should seriously be in the hunt, I really hope he doesn’t start listening to the packagers who try to change him and make him play it safe.

I’ve gone through 1400 replies and learned quite a bit more than I learned by watching the debate itself. Thank you all. Thread almost got hijacked on the illegals issue.
My impressions after watching last night and reading the thread so far are that Perry got very muddled on that answer re Romney’s flipflopping. He’s been running around NYC fund-raising and campaigning and he must be exhausted. Also, I’ve noticed that once you begin to lose it onstage you find it difficult to recover. Too bad it was so close to the end of the debate, because that is the answer that people will remember best about Perry’s performance. His overall performance was OK, I thought. Very good in some parts.
Gingrich is already a figure of American history and so has a built-in advantage. He has stature and gravitas. It’s almost unfair to compare him with the others.
Romney: the slick operator he always has been.
Bachmann: tenacious on her strong points but she lost it at a few points.
Cain: delightful
I would actually say Perry won the debate. There was a lot of misinformation fired at him, as discussed in this thread, and the moderators were Romney bots so that did not help him. In my mind, he is still the top contender.
Now that Christie is thinking of jumping in, things may change.
