Republicans Grill Officials Over 'Offensive' Definition of Green Jobs

In a series of tense exchanges, Republicans on a House oversight panel sharply questioned whether the Obama administration was looking to inflate the number of "green" jobs by using a broad definition -- which, as it turns out, counts virtually anybody working in mass transit.

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, grilled officials from the departments of Energy and Labor during his hearing Thursday. The meeting quickly turned into a forum for Republicans to vent their frustration with the government's subsidization of the clean-energy sector, in the wake of a controversy over loans to a now-bankrupt solar firm.

Issa and other Republicans alleged that taxpayers were not getting their money's worth.

"Three years and billions of taxpayer dollars later, the American people have received very little return on the president's signature investment," Issa said.

Official data on green jobs are hard to come by. The Bureau of Labor Statistics currently is trying to come up with a workable definition and formula to track green-jobs employment. The bureau expects to have its first estimate out early next year.

Labor Secretary Hilda Solis pointed to a separate study claiming 2.7 million Americans are in "clean economy" positions.

But Republicans said the working term the government is using is far too broad, suggesting officials were trying to pad the figures.

"It's offensive," Rep. Connie Mack, R-Fla., said, raising his voice while questioning Solis. Mack argued that just because a bus driver is driving a hybrid bus doesn't mean it's a green job.

"Yes it is," Solis countered.

"It's only a green job if it fits into your sales pitch," Mack shot back.

The BLS is working off a definition that would count as green any job that provides goods or services "that benefit the environment or

how can ANY gains be measured when there haven't been any gains to measure?

Is this going to be like the last "book-cooking" that was the retrofitting Zeros stimulus goal of SAVING jobs, not increasing the number of jobs?

I've been with same company for some time now, will my job be re-classed as green job and thus a newly created green job?

That is along the same vein as "jobs saved or created" statistics.

This administration is bending words into pretzels trying to show successes where there are only failures.

In practice, transit buses actually use more fuel, per passenger mile, than automobiles. Check out the chart at the following link.

So, what is the guide to “green jobs?”

I mean, I work for an electrical contractor. We have been contracted to install curb-side and residential electrical recharging stations. Does that mean that all of my electricians who have installed one is a “green job?” How about the supply clerk that ordered it? How about the warehouse man who held it and then loaded it into the service van? How about the service Manager who managed the job? How about the secretary that answered the phone that lead to the job?

This is nothing but verbal “pretzlization!” They are changing words to make things look like they worked, when the proof is TOTALLY opposite!

Look... An argument is a connected series of statements to establish a definite proposition. Contradiction is just the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says

This is the basis of theory for the idiotic “environmental” Carbon-credit scheme.....
You buy a car.... -50 credits
You buy a car with decent gas mileage.... -25 credits
You keep driving your old car.... -10 credits
You stop driving your old car.... +10 credits
You walk everywhere instead of driving.... +25 credits
You walk everywhere and live in your car...+50 credits
You buy a Chev Volt, put solar cells on your roof, appear in TV ads and tell others that they are anti-environmentel.... +100 credits You become a democrat and think your poo doesn’t stink, because your “Carbon credits” have been bought from some teenager who rides a Yak in a third world slum... Congratulations!! You are now either a California democrat or the current Prresident!!
