A local attorney and his two sons were severely injured in a blast when a bomb denoted in their car as they were driving on E. Elm Ave. late Tuesday afternoon. Law enforcement officials and attorneys said the victim is Erik G. Chappell, whose law practice is based in Sylvania, Ohio, but who lives in the county. His two sons, believed to be aged 11 and 13, were seriously injured and all three are in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo.
This was not an intent to injure; this was an intent to kill, said a family friend who declined to be identified. Everybodys going to make it, but theres a lot of heartache ahead. Im still in shock.
Several attorneys and members of the legal community who know Mr. Chappell said this morning they were told by federal agents to not discuss the case with media. The explosive device detonated as the three were driving, apparently on their way to football practice, around 5:40 p.m. on E. Elm near I-75. Monroe police would acknowledge only that the three occupants were in serious condition. Mr. Chappell is a football coach in the areas Catholic Youth Organization.
The Detroit Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms is investigating the case and released no information this morning.
Sources, however, said Mr. Chappell had been receiving threats. He is a divorce attorney also involved with several high-profile Monroe County cases, including hot dog stand owners who sued the city in 2009 after they were banned from operating their carts.
It has not been determined if a suspect in the bombing has been developed, but police sources said there are so-called persons of interest.
It is believed the device was placed underneath the passenger side of the Chappell car. One of the boys was sitting in the passenger seat and suffered serious lower extremity injuries, especially to his legs.
The bomb may have contained shrapnel, because all three victims suffered wounds from flying debris, officials said.
There were no witnesses in the vicinity where the bomb exploded. It was believed that Mr. Chappell was able to drag his sons from the car, which quickly became engulfed in flames. The shell of the car is being stored at a secure area.
Monroe Police Chief Tom Moore said the case is in its early stages and ATF officials are the lead investigators.
Dear Lord. Prayers for them.
Mob hit?
I thought the mob didn’t hurt kids.
This is more likely a hit by a husband who was forced into a divorce by this attorney.
We need divorce reform in this country so divorce for no reason doesn’t take place.
There was just another divorce where the wife attacked the cold hearted judge saying “I haven’t done anything.”
No fault divorce is evil.
He sure made someone mad...hope they catch the bomber soon
The people who did this didn`t care how many they killed
Prayers up they recover
This one sounds like it was semi pro. The bomb was triggered while the car was on the road.
So, the victims were at fault and the poor bomber was “forced” into it?
Okay, who’s he represented? Any muslims? They like to pack their bombs with shrapnel.
Well, no, that is not what I was saying. What I was saying is that the lawyers become natural targets because of the sick and obscene state of the law which is eviscerating people.
Of course it is attempted murder under anyone’s definition. But the lawyer was just a convenient target.

The Client: I know where the body’s buried.
oh Lord. I just now saw the Catholic connection. Divorce is even more morally depraved in the Catholic belief system. (BTW I am Catholic)
cell phone activated?
An attorney and his kids are bombed and you explain it or justify it by assuming the lawyer brought it on himself. Nice.
Toledo Blade. Two pics in article.
Would-be hot dog vendor sues the city of Monroe; case mired in federal court for nearly two years
or delayed fuse with 5-10 minutes. Could be as simple as a line attached to the wheels, but it sounds pretty bad with the kids in the car. I'm betting divorce, cause nothing makes a guy madder than losing his family on top of losing money.
First thing that came to my mind was maybe the lawyer belonged to the Tea Party. Wonder if anyone recently talked publically about "taking people out"?
The firm does work in Monroe County.
